Post a pic of what you go climbing in.

I noticed a need for a thread like this. Maybe one already exists but anyway...

Big or small. truck or car. Post a pic of your beast!

I want to go to Witham Army Disposal Yard in England, pick out one of these bad boys, have it shipped to Houston, and drive it home across the southwest.

I go climbing in my shoes....

The type of vehicle doesn't matter.
Location is all important, though.
You park it near the climbs and then leave it and get to the climbing.

Now that's about as nice a standard truck bed set up as I've seen, well done. I got hooked on the VW van path long ago, and its hard to give up a standing room living room, but this isn't half bad.

Here's the first van I owned:

Kind of a cult thing, don't know that I'd recommend it as the "ultimate". The 91 Vanagon I've presently got is warmer, faster, more dependable, but it's still an overpriced fetish object, and disturbingly attractive to mouse infestations.

I say the one that has no payment.

If I could have whatever I wanted I would have a VW bus with a new Jetta engine,

In the winter anything that gets good gas milage and is all wheel drive. Probably a Subaru something..

If I was rice I would get a sprinter and have that company that converts them to four wheel drive do the conversion. If I could afford that I am pretty sure I would never go home!

This was a pretty darn good climbing rig. Syncro 4x4 that went just about anywhere :) So much room in those things. i feel the reguler vanagon has more usefull liveing space than the westy. All those closets and sh#t vtake up your liveing space. i built a nice little kitchen from dumpster wood and my vanagon rocked. I always hit my head on the fcking overhead cupboard of Isa's westy and the bed is only about a 3rd the size of the bed in the Vanagon. Where Isa is sitting in this photo would be a closet in the west that is a bitch to even get into as the fold out table blocks it unless the table is in the out possition...

I had a Subaru GL wagon (predecessor to Outback)....put 315K on that baby. Did lots of mods over the years- ripped out the back seat and installed a sleeping platform...a bit snug, but I could sleep in it w/gf (I'm 6'4"). Put two engines in it myself, and countless CV joints.

Sounds epic, I know...but Subarus are kinda like VW's that way...lots of cult attitude towards 'em. My Subaru bivy sack took me to endless adventures.

Loving my Express 1500 AWD... V8 power pulls anything! Pitch a tent on top, or sleep on bed inside.. Led lighting, Fully insulated sides and ceiling, rubber padded floor for easy sweet outs. The bed platform fits all the gear in the free world underneath, or fits x3 10ft boards ( surf when i cant climb!)
The AWD on this is killer, ive never gotten stuck following my taco and jeep pals up the muddy trails or in deep snow.

Hehe! Thanks... Oh, and on single day trips I roll in the Saabaru... 1 part saab, 99parts subie. So I fully endorse the subaru buyings... When the wifes volvo wagon gives up the ghost, well get into a legacy wagon.

Also, +1 on the syncros, sportsmobile and sprinters... All amazing in thier own ways...but if I was going with a smaller van, it would have to be a Delica... 4wd turbo diesel FTW. But agreed, all forms of hedonistic van fetish. Lol.

Chevy Astro Van or GMC Safari vans are great little camping rigs.

Just install rear sleeping platform sideways on the drivers side in place of rear bench seat. There is also room inside for your Mt bikes without taking the wheels off, try that in a Subaru.

The Astro/Safaris were made from about 1987 to 2005. From 2003 to 2005 they have 4 wheel disc brakes and 16 inch wheels. An AWD version is also available. The engine is 4.3 liter V6 very reliable. Mileage 17 city for 2WD and maybe 20 mpg highway. AWD drops mileage by about 1 or 2 mpg depending on tires, and axle ratio.
A $200 bolt on kit is available from Overland Vans to install a 2 inch lift kit for more clearance.
See www.Astrosafarivans.org for great users group.

GM should bring back the rugged Astro type van to compete with Ford Transit Connect, Dodge Promaster, and others.

Yes, I may get the AWD Chevy Express also. I do like the extra space. The new 6 speed transmission is nice and the 5.3 liter V8 is sweet.
For years I had a 1994 G20 Chevy full size van which was awesome too.

I don't really understand the advantage of a roof top tent. Why not just put it on the ground?

disadvantages to me

you have to fold it up every time you want to drive somewhere.
Its just not simple to get in and out of
you have to climb a ladder to get into it. So you better have everything out of the car that you need
my knees are old and my bladder is weak. pissing in a bottle is only for bad weather or cliff side bivys.

so what are the advantages. A couple of people here swear by them, so they must have something good.

Sprinter Van outfitted by Sportsmobile, enough room for wife, gear and the beasts. We had a Euro Van for years with the full camper set up. The SV gets better gas mileage and you don't bump your head, you just need the cheese to pay for it.

Are you kidding? WIth a rooftop tent in my van, I can pull up, pop the top and sleep. No getting out in the cold to set up a tent. Plus it makes it so I can stand up in the van while cooking. The pop-top in the van is the single best thing about a camper-van.

The only downside is when I rarely end up in a place where I can't camp in my vehicle (i.e. Camp 4)

Alpamayo.. those kinds of tents are cool in my opinion, because like you say, it gives you head room and you don't have to leave the vehicle. I was talking about what Bruce posted on the previous page. Someone else here has one on top of their tricked out 4 runner. the vehicle looks cool, but the tent not so much. Just my two cents. when it come to car camping, everyone has a different idea of what they like. If you love it, go for it. I was just curious why people liked them.

OKOK.. YES, the SPORTSMOBILE is the BOMB.com.

I think confusion is happening between two things..

1) Pop top vans ( the best )

and

2) Aftermarket pop up tents that install on any roof top ( cool but not as BA as a van poptop.. aka, westie, sportsmobile ect. )

they are different.......

Sprinter 4X4s are finally coming to the US in 2015.

It would be hard to beat. If I had lots of disposable income I'd get the high top (pop ups are colder and less convenient) sportsmobile conversion.

A domestic van 4X4 conversion or cabover camper would have more clearance and get you to more rugged places, but the Sprinter's mpg and better ride would be a better compromise IMO. I spend 99%+ of my time on the road so would prefer to cater toward that. It would also be a winter/skiing camping rig for me, hence the importance of 4x4 and high top.

Of course the Sprinter 4X4 option alone is like $11,000. That's a good chunk of what I'd spend on a whole vehicle realistically.
