A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, this was Edge on the Cathedral Ledge A3 route "The British are Coming".
Notice the ridiculous aviator style glasses and the 70's "pr0n star" moustache. Ladies, where were you all???

Further, it's entirely possible that the leather bag in the photo was emptied of all "paraphernalia" to protect the rope from running over a sharp edge. "Paraphernalia" of course meaning religious artifacts.

Yes, of course that's what it means...

Totally off-route on our approach to Mount Mendel (the first time), we ended up Frenching it up Lamarck Couloir on Mt. Lamarck. Only on topping-out, did we realize that we sucked at reading topos. …turns out we did the second ascent, missing the first by no more that a few days. Twenty-something pitches. Richard Harrison, Robs Muir, Terry Goodykoontz (?), circa 1973-ish.

High Exposure, Gunks, 1968. Climbing in hiking boots, extra socks jammed behind my heels for fit, hammer in pocket: totally equipped! One or zero fixed pins clipped, hands frozen numb to the wrist and not very happy but somebody had to get the rope up, since the photographer wasn't helping out much.

It's not snow, but the photo was poorly exposed and to see any detail in the climber, it was lightened up a lot in printing. It was November, I think pretty late November, and like 34 degrees and blowing hard. It was anything but the casual but fun High E we know and love, definitely full value, old style.

One old friend, two new ones, and a bottle of wine at Bandana Central, the first pitch ledge on Lunar Leap, Lembert Dome 1977

Same ledge the next year, but sober

I've got history with that ledge. One time I was just pulling over onto it when I found my nose inches from the rancid urine filled solution pocket on the edge, as my belayer called out "You're out of rope".

And since this thread is about vintage sartorial splendor, I'll throw in a picture of some damn hippy at the parking lot below Lembert.

I don't have much at all from "back in the day". But I have scrounged up two, one by complete chance.

I came by the first two Christmas' ago. Myself, spouse, and 2 kids went to the mountains of central Arizona to spend Christmas with my parents. My dad and I were out on the deck admiring the view of the Mogollon Rim, when my 2 kids (17 and 20) came out asking what the story is behind this photo grandma showed them of me looking like Jesus. I had no idea what they were talking about until they whipped this out on me.

In 1976, I purchased my first custom stick for $125, with color gloss and polish, cut laps, the whole deal. It was a 7'6" Rick James from San Clemente. Not the black base player btw. Note my old del Cannon blue tint behind on the fence in the background. I suppose I should put this in the hottest you ever looked thread too, because, well ...that was it for me. All down hill from there....

Next is early '80's looking down "Wall Street" on Picacho del Diablo (or La Encantada) in Baja California Norte. Was down there mapping some geology.

Triassic Sands was the first route in the canyon, which we finished that day in 1972. At the time this place had been named Velvet Canyon, not Black Velvet Canyon, by Betsy & Joe.

The precursor to Epinephire was the bold Velvet Wall route, put up in 1973 by Joe Herbst and Tom Kaufman. It followed the modern Epinephrine line through the pitch above Black Tower -- very runout as they placed no protection bolts on that face (there are 2 bolts on it now), or in the chimneys as far as I know. Joe & Tom finished Velvet Wall by connecting with the big diagonal ramp instead of the steep bolted corners that now are upper Epinephrine.

I'd like to play?

I haven't been hanging out at the 'Taco Stand' much lately.
Just stumbled across this thread only now.
OK so it's Friday ~
But then... I usually am a 'day late and a dollar short".
For me 'vintage' is early/mid 70's.
So I'm apparently I am lot younger than a lot of these 'ole crones...
Yet my teens were already well behind me by the early 90's.

This first pic is Bradley Achorn, my first climbing partner.
We were hitch hiking to North Conway in in a warm, light rain.
It was late spring/early summer 76' (?)
I couldn't help but use up one of the valuable 24 frames available on my 110 'instamatic'
Standing at the beginning of the 'Pilgrims Highway',
Rt #16 after getting off the I-95N at the old Portsmouth traffic rotary.
This was my attempt at a 'satirical photographic composition'.

It was early spring and our journey north up 'The Pilgrims Highway'
we past the Venerable gate way to the 'Whites'.

We went straight to Cathedral Ledge and started right into almost killing ourselves,
on a successful seige of 'Fun House' (5.7) on Cathedral Ledge,
we went and spent a day or two on the North end slabs top roping.

It rained for a couple of days so we bivi'd under the Cathedral Roof.
By the end of the week it was time to hitch hike home again,
so we went and bagged our Trophy climb.
We thought it was pretty good day for a couple of self taught 15 year olds,
when we motor'd 'Sliding Board' on Whitehorse.

We did a lot of hitch hiking that summer.
One of our forays was a very long day to 'Crow Hill'.
I never returned but that is not the crag's fault.
The ill taste was more a product of the 8 hr hitch there...
and double that to get home including a forced urban bivy.

There was no such thing as the internet. But there was magazines like 'On Belay'.
Heck there was even mega stoke to be found surfacing in main stream media:

That first season in North Conway we had a small, white, paper back guide book.
But the next season the 'Dream Machine' expanded,
when we discovered I.M.E and the new Ross/Elms guide book

To be continued in the summer of 77'
See yah next Thursd.... I mean Friday...

I loved that shirt !
It was a wool shirt marketed by 'Joe Brown'.
The weave and colours looked like a climbing rope.

The hat was knit for me by a dear friend. The yarn was from Peru.
I later lost it in the winter. I was descending down Raymond's cataract,
after soloing 'Odell's in Huntington's ravine on Mt. Washtub.
Like a fool I was over heating and put it in the pocket of my Woolrich knickers :(

Mouse and others. Yes it is Traitor Horn on Tahquitz, classic 5.8. The dangling hex doesn't increase the dicey-ness or grip factor for the follower for the move to the horn or after. The rope lays nicely over the top and is in line for the follower on both moves. It may be possible to place one (for the leader) from the horn but probably not important.
Done it 25 times.

La Escuela, 1970. I'm the blob on top. Mike Caldwell (Tommy's father) beginning to clean. We used 150-foot ropes, and the Red Roper guide said the first part of the climb was 100 feet. Having complete faith in the guide, I discovered that I should have stopped at the ledge, hence the sling belay.

Enlarging pin scars on Serenity Crack. Me cleaning the second pitch (note rack and halibut hat), 1970. Less than two years later, we returned without hammers or pins, and discovered how scary the first 30 feet can be. Ironically, Dan found a CMI hammer on the way down.

My first new route. Circa 1978. Taffs Well, Near Cardiff, South Wales, UK. An old limestone quarry, situated next to a busy road and railway. On this attempt, I eventually stalled out. The gear was non-existent, rock poor. I untied one rope and my belayer ran round to the top (he likely had to rappel first to reach the bottom) and then threw one end of the rope down to me, just as my calf muscles were about to explode. Returned a week later with a more determined attitude. Rated this HVS (5.9). Clueless. Now it gets E3 (5.10R/X)

Thanks E! Yes, I'd say memory is flexible and mistaken at times. HA!

During the first ascent, which I was also on, but only up to the bivy "hole", Scott Davis and I definitely tried to talk Bob McGowan into the name Zortex Thrux, which he didn't buy, but we preferred.

Therefore, the exact line of Soft Shoe, including the difficult and dangerous seam directly above the death flake, will always be Zortex Thrux to us others that were there.

Scott put up a very difficult couple pitches to the right, which he called Bat Chain Puller. I think it turned into some 5.13 route.

The other names are not familiar to me.

is it long ago and far away enough?Do we have any need to hear that chapter of a gifted geniuss' story.
He could have been helped to achieve more, maybe greatness,
if that community had been less dick-centric.
I know some of the story that your Question speaks to. (and have forgotten a lot)
That his climbing feats still go unreported is unforgivable. That is the way it is, for many though.
(He along with D Lahnman & J Stern sent V10? in the late '80's)
Lets try and speak to his art or climbing, not that sad chapter.
Although it is decades ago many who can never know the whole story,
will judge the man on that bad information.

Your first ascents should also be recognized!!

Did you keep any notes or pictures ?

The picture of Bev in her prime is that anywhere that you recognize?

Cheers, man.

I was recruited by Jim Kolocotronis for the FA of Welcome to the Gunks.

I thought it was in '72 but the guide says '73, so make that 24(a guess) and 41 years ago. The photo is either from the years we lived in Toronto, '87-'91, or a time I drove up from Long Island on a visit to my wife's family.

That is Peter Darmi!,
He was the oldest climber in the crew in the late '80s and '90s.when he turned fifty!
A big # to those just arriving at the big three zero. From the shoes I would say it must have been the Mid '80s not later than '87?!
((the shoes were sticky but delaminated, came unglued in the car ect.))
He is a NYC/Hollywood recording engineer and did very well for himself.
That said he had some quirks like all of us and lost a great wife for not growing up, and not for, as he told it,for climbing to much.((She later married a Waugh, Mike ? I think it was))
Edit;
The man would know what he was climbing! so it is Welcome To The Gunks!!
Not Laughing Man. ( that is the flake /roof behind him back past the small corner.)
The picture shows the start and first two cruxes of the still spicey
Welcome To The Gunks!
(proud for you to have been on the FA of that one!), If you led the critical cruxes it is your route lets protest....... the authors got all sorts of stuff wrong!
good on you the wroof is tuff stuff!!

so I will not use it, Jim K. was a hero to me. I was and still am, a hook on my harness fan!

The bolt on the right was placed in early 1946 by Anton 'Ax' Nelson on Kasparek's Delight at the Pinnacles National Monument a few months before he did the first ascent of the Lost Arrow Tip.

The bolt on the left has the blade of a soft iron piton as a hanger. Very early 'ghetto' climbing hardware.

For those of us who do lot of rebolting this is a common situation. The reason I remove the old hardware is because it seems like when I don't do that and just put two nice Stainless Steel bolts both with rap rings next to it, I come back and somebody has put a nylon sling, or two, between all three bolts!

In the Pinnacles we are trying really hard to put rappel hardware on all the anchors for two important reasons. First off, the sun is so brutal at the Pinnacles late spring to early fall that nylon slings just disintegrate. Secondly, with the release of the California Condors, which scavenge for food, they pick at the brightly colored slings.

Thank you all for replacing bolts.....

to be more specific... Some are historical, e.g. The bolt placed by Ax Nelson way up on Castle Rock spire... Its not really needed now because a #3 cam may be placed next to it. (they didn't have 3 inch pins BITD) That bolt has the bent aluminum hanger.... and AX placed it with his own hands... grab it, feel it and your touching AX's handi work..... At the Needles, first pitch of Spook Book, there was a bolt Kamps placed... in a hurry... it was 1/2 way in, bent over like a poorly pounded nail with a spinning hanger. We used it for like 25 years. Now in its place is a bomber 3/8 one... solid and functional, but the old one had character. That bolt should have been left in place with the new one adjacent to it... just so modern cragsters could get a glimpse of the "old style".

At places that are heavily used, go ahead and replace and add more if need be to make good anchors, im down with that. And get rid of all webbing rap stations, thats a good thing to do.

Just call me a hopeless romantic.

Guyman,

we try to do the best we can with respect to the historical nature of the bolts. For example, on the Shaft, at Pinnacles National Park the 5.10 route is an old 1/4" bolt ladder with 10 bolts. The 8th bolt is a bolted piton(hole drilled in the blade for the stud, you clip the eye). Since there were seven good, closely-spaced bolts, below it I left it in place.

On the Northeast corner of the Monolith, the only protection on the whole pitch was Mark Powell's bolted piton. We had to replace that for safety sake. If we had just put a new bolt next to it, someone would have mistaken it for a belay.

That picture of half dome at the top of this page is mine. Ahwahnee bartender (Theo) ripped me off. What a shitty trip that was. We took are girlfreinds with us and were supposed to meet us on top. I had loaned a couple of packs and tents because they had none. Telling them to make sure they hung them up on the bear wires when they left little yosemite valley. Instead they "hid" the food inside my sleeping bag and put it inside my tent where the "bears could not find it", I returned to find all my stuff and all the food trashed. I hiked alone up to the top of half dome to tell them we bailed, only to find out they had "cut" a switchback and I missed them. bask at camp I was just pissed, slept in my tattered tent that night and lashed what I could salvage to my ruined pack and stormed back to the valley the next day. Those were some good times back then in 1976....

Steve A, first glance at the folks sitting at table in C4 & I thought, "Phil Gleason."
That's about as long as Dill's hair ever got, too, seems to me.

Nice effort, but the zeitgeist can never be recaptured. Foolish endeavor, IMO.
