Hey guys,
Over the past couple years I've been working with a new photo pack company, MindShift Gear to develop some innovative solutions for carrying camera gear in the outdoors. We launched with a successful Kickstarter campaign for our Rotation180º Pro backpack, which has now been nominated as a finalist for an award from the design site Carryology.com. We'd really like to win this award and would appreciate your help! If you have a few spare seconds, pop over to the site, scroll down, and click the button to select us as your first choice!

Here's the link: http://www.carryology.com/projects/carry-awards/best-specialist-carry-the-second-annual-carry-awards/

Thanks in advance!

Jerry - I'm looking for a new pack so this is good timing. I'm looking for something for day hiking, generally east side of the Sierra, Death Valley, etc. My camera gear is a D800e with 24 - 70 mounted, and then carry my 14 - 24, and 70 - 200, sometimes my 105 micro, all 2.8, a few filters, plus tripod. Then I need a rain jacket, water, snacks, and other odds and ends for day hiking. These are day hikes when the purpose is photography.

Will this pack do it?

Hi Don. Yes, this is the pack for those pro lenses. I recommend getting the R180º Pro and the Lens Switch case. The D800, 24-70, 14-24, and 105 will all fit in the belt pack, no problem. Put the 70-200 in the case and place it in the upper compartment where you have plenty of room for all your other gear plus a big reservoir on the side. I've been stuffing it like this, with a set of draws, a gri-gri, one ascender, light harness and shoes for a day of sport climbing and shooting. The rope straps over the top. It carry's very comfortably and you can just take the belt pack by itself if you want to zip up the rope to shoot.

For light weight endeavors the new Panorama pack is really sweet. It doesn't hold as much extra cargo, but will just fit the D800 with an L bracket, and 1-2 lenses in the belt pack. The Nikon 24-70 is a big lens and with the lens cap and UV filter may fit better horizontally in the belt pack. (Canon 24-70 is smaller and fits better). This pack is lighter and a great solution for light photo excursions, mountain biking, and car to car peak bagging outings. I've been putting my D800 in there with 24-85mm and 18-35 or 70-300mm lenses, which are lighter and more compact than the 14-24/24-70 lenses. Of course you can put extra gear including the 70-200 up top.

Also, check out the Filter Hive, which will organize your filter junk-show.

Hope this helps.

Jerry - thanks for the info. Does it really swing out and back in as easy as the video makes it look? If you have weight in the upper part of the bag or stuff it full of gear, does it compress or put pressure on the lower part and make it harder to swing out or put back in?

Was this developed in association with Think Tank? They make great bags, and if this is on off-shoot I'm sure the quality is very good.

Don, it really does work as advertised and the new Panorama pack works even better.

Nature, it fits canon great, it just LOOKS better with Nikon gear! Ha! ;-) actually the Canon folks love it because they can get a mark 3, with 17-40, 24-105 and a 100-400 in the belt pack.

Jerry ~

I can appreciate the time and effort involved in your projects. DonC, Ed Hartouni and others might remember this ad. In the early '70s I helped design and manufacture some of the first hip-suspension external frame backpacks with Alpenlite. We, too were trying to incorporate a way to make cameras more accessible.

Later, in the '90s I designed and built high end golf bags and travel bags with Leonardo Mfg., in Bellevue, WA. Several of the top pro golfers of the day used our equipment.

Best of luck with your innovative designs. The Panorama gear looks good too.

Thanks Keith. Its been a fun and educational process, and amazing how hard it is to take an idea all the way through design and manufacturing, and bring it to market.

Keith - even after 40 years I remember those days of youth at Alpenlite. I think that's Jerry Lawrence in the ad? He was one of the owners with Don Douglas if I recall.

Hey Jerry, you mention the Panorama pack works even better - what are the functional/performance differences besides the obvious size difference? Does the fanny portion rotate/insert easier due to the apparent taper? Else? Thanks, Dave.
