AH was good...6+*'s out of 10 in my book

Christian Bale was especially great, and highly watchable. Jennifer Lawrence was essentially a second string character, in spite of how the trailers portrayed her.

Man of Steel - Too long, great cast but meh. I usually like Nolan's stuff, but this one didn't do justice to it's potential.

Django Unchained - Solid. I'd heard mixed reviews, thought it was very good but not great. Mid tier in the Tarantino collection.

See it. It really surprised me. Not predictable. Excellent acting. Really good character interactions and a unique story and storyline. Had kind of a "Stand by Me" meets 'The Fugitive" vibe.

A couple movies I've seen lately that I would recommend are

Life of Pi - Good story and good visuals except for a couple action sequences with excessive fake-looking CGI.

Wolf of Wall Street - If you enjoy Martin Scorsese films, you'll like it. DiCaprio and Jonah Hill are great.

And a couple films which I DON'T recommend are:

Warm Bodies - Good concept (basically a Twilight spoof, where the girl falls in love with a zombie instead of a vampire), but horribly executed. This could have been an awesome gore-filled dark comedy for adults, but instead is a boring pg-13 romance for tweens. The zombies read, drive cars, and TALK, wtf?

Amazing Spiderman - Way too long. Seems to also be targeting the Twilight demographic with lots of teen angst. This trailer sums it up

I loved this movie....get it on Netflix:

WADJDA is a movie of firsts. This first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia is the story of a young girl living in a suburb of Riyadh determined to raise enough money to buy a bike in a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl's virtue. Even more impressive, WADJDA is the first feature film made by a female Saudi filmmaker. In a country where cinemas are banned and women cannot drive or vote, writer- director Haifaa Al Mansour has broken many barriers with her new film. (c) Sony Classics

Hunger Games -- Catching Fire: Better than the first installment. Very good! Now waiting on the third.

Ender's game -- A let-down after the book. Could have been twice as long, and that would have been better. But very good FX, and it stays true enough to the book that it's good enough. I don't know why they were afraid to make it an hour longer, at least. The story certainly had the necessary depth.

Machete Kills -- Well, uhhh... I'm dumber now than I was before. During the scene with the intestines ratcheting a bad guy up into the helicopter rotor, I swear (although now I really can't remember) I felt small portions of my brain collapse in on themselves, producing small black holes that may well have long term ever-dumbifying results. I think it was supposed to be a spoof, but I'm too dumb now to sort it out. Okay, "Machete Kills -- In Space" is the upcoming sequel. By the time it's released, I'll probably be too dumb to not watch it; and that will likely be terminal. You are warned!

I've been on a Jim Jarmusch binge lately -

"Dead Man" with Johnny Depp. The Neil Young soundtrack is worth it alone.

"Night on Earth" - five cabs in five cities. The Italian scene with Roberto Benigni is a riot!

Also managed to sneak in a old DVR capture of Nick Cage's
"Bringing out the Dead". Not Jarmusch but very intense.

Yeah, when the trailers for WofWS came out, it looked very interesting...

Many who have seen it, though, say it's entertaining, except for the fact that the incredible damage those people created in the real world is just treated as laughable entertainment.

Saw Wolf of Wall Street recently. Didn't leave much impression.

It's a long time since I saw Django Unchained, but I think that was one of the best this last year. Scenes out of it has remained after I've forgotten which others I've seen.

There was a film with Russel Crowe and someone else, which wasn't bad. The someone else had a daughter. And then I know I went to the movies, but have totally forgotten what I saw. Can't have been very good.

Not bad. I'll watch it again. I'm into that kind of stuff.
What really got me was that a few people in the theater brought their little kids to see this movie.

Now, I'm not tryin' to be a prude, but this movie has some brutal battle scenes. I can remember at least 3 or 4 graphic decapitations. Plus, the sex scenes (including violent rape) are outrageous.

I actually said something to one lady afterwards (she had an infant and 3 toddlers), "Great movie for kids" . . .

In the last week I've seen:

"12 Years A Slave" was better than expected. Not too sappy and it keeps up the pace. Good soundtrack. Sort of avant-garde in its editing and presentation. I recommend it.

Disney's "Frozen" was a letdown. I liked its basic concept, and how it plays with the "kiss from prince charming" trope. But I found the pacing to be off, characters under developed, and there are some plot holes and contrivances which bothered me. Compared with the latest stuff from Pixar (like "Brave") the animation isn't all that great either.

"Schooled: The Price of College Sports" is a good documentary on the NCAA and exploitation of college athletes. Worth watching especially since the topic's been all over the news with the latest Supreme Court ruling.

Arn: The Knight Templar. The Complete Series. 2010
The six part epic miniseries on Netflix is a compilation of 2 full length movies. Subtitled.

Joakim Nätterqvist - Arn
Sophia Helin - Cecilia

Mostly in Swedish, a joint production between Denmark, Norway, Finland and Germany. Lollie might know this one.

Set in the mid 12th Century, two lovers are separated for 20 years for their youthful indiscretions. Cecilia goes to a convent, and the monastic Arn is sent to the Holy Land as a Knight Templar. There he encounters the enemy of all Christendom, and Saracen leader, Saladin in a depiction of the historic battle of Montgisard.

The monks speak Latin, English, Swedish and French. Scenes in the Holy Land feature Arabic.

watched Chef... fun road trip movie with foodies and evokes the desire to find and eat a Cubano... (but perhaps we need some of the Floridian contingent to help out on that)...

then You Can Count on Me, which was ok, well acted and a small movie.

I think recently we saw Youth Without Youth which was an interesting film (but not a great film), some interesting ideas there.

The Search for Robert Johnson was another interesting movie, but of course there isn't much history to unearth there... the most moving scene was an interview with Willie Mae Powell, who was a Johnson girl friend (and this would be back in the 1930's). The last she saw of him he was going off to record his music... but she never got to hear Love in Vain, which was played for her...

"...whooo, Willie Mae..."

it was an amazing scene. Could you imagine something like that... 60 odd years later.

Looking forward to seeing 'Wild'...it has special meaning for my sweetie & I, for several reasons. I heard it wasn't half bad, either (if you can set aside the technical details of hiking the PCT)...

Watched 'Maidentrip' a couple of nights ago- someone here recommended it. Pretty good, though a little depressing towards the end. Maybe it's just part of the maturation process, but it was sad to watch a spirited, idealistic young girl with a good relationship with her father begin a separation process (& identity establishing process) with her life & roots, through such an impressive adventure. Still worth a watch.

Been streaming 'Borgia', the French Canal+ three season series. Pretty damn
good considering the liberties they took with the script. Surprisingly, or
not, they stuck to the known knowns and made the unknowns very entertaining
and believable. They threw in some really subtle historical bits that only
a few people would appreciate. One was a reference to Columbus' recent trips
where they showed a very small portion of a painting in the Vatican museum
which only a few years ago was discovered to show the first depiction of
Carib Indians.

The publicity campaign is better than the movie.

Uh, huh.

This week, prominent San Mateo, Calif., cybersecurity firm Norse Corp. — whose clients include government agencies, financial institutions and technology companies — briefed law enforcement officials on evidence it collected that pointed toward an inside job.

"We can't find any indication that North Korea either ordered, masterminded or funded this attack," Kurt Stammberger, a senior vice president at Norse, said in an interview with The Times. Although conceding that his findings were not conclusive, Stammberger added: "Nobody has been able to find a credible connection to the North Korean government."

Stammberger said a team of nine analysts dug through data including Norse's worldwide network of millions of Web sensors, internal Sony documents and underground hacker chat rooms. Leads suggesting North Korea as the culprit turned out to be red herrings and dead ends, he said.

A couple movies I've watched recently that I'd recommend...

The Double (2014)
Artsy dystopian film (compared to Brazil). Great sense of atmosphere, good music and ambient sound design, mildly humorous, deliberately ambiguous plot.

Out of the Furnace (2013)
Gritty crime drama with a bunch of really big actors who deliver some great performances. Small town setting, vigilante justice. Compare to Killing Them Softly.

Also saw GI Joe Retaliation (2013). Not necessarily "good", but relevant for its climbing content. It has a back-to-back chimney climb out of a well and also a cirque du soleil style "pendulum sword fight" on the side of a vertical cliff face. Complete with realistic Camalot placements and everything.

All 3 of them are available on Netflix streaming.

Edit: Expendables 3 also has a climbing scene in the Tetons. All-points-off lateral dyno while free soloing. Then the hold breaks and he deploys a base jumping shoot.

"Wild" wasn't that great. Read the book, loved it, and.....the movie was a let down.

I do recommend "Inherent Vice"....yes.... Joaquim Phoenix as a hippy private investigator....awesome, Josh Brolin as his cop buddy.....Yes..way good.

Almost went to American Sniper today, I just know it is great but watched "Boyhood" for the second time instead, free on Netflix. Loved it.

"Wild" Saw it at the ArcLight with excellent sound and big screen, worth the splurge. Nice cinematography. Excellent acting, Reese never breaks character and carries the film well. Mostly filmed in Oregon, with shooting in CA to establish scenes, All acting was shot in OR. Didn't read the book. Was fully engaged for the whole film, the story of a healing journey and acceptance of life on its terms after a rough period of self destructive coping.
The Pacific Crest Trail Association and its work should benefit from some additional support. Don't know much about the group. Hope they use the added support wisely.

I saw American Sniper. What a stupid f*#king movie. I have to deal with enough stupid cowboys and rednecks on a daily basis where I live, don't have to go to the theater to watch a stupid movie about stupid cowboys and rednecks.

The military aspect of the movie was also quite unimpressive. Frankly I really don't see what anyone likes about the movie.

I'm a fan of Clint's movies, not his politics. I give "American Sniper" an A-. Bradley Cooper is outstanding. Is it pro war? Not in my opinion. Without giving away the ending, I'll say that it paints a realistic portrait of the difficulty veterans have assimilating back home.

It won't challenge "Boyhood" as Best Picture, but it certainly is one of the best movies of 2014.

SLR, thanks for yer review. The trailers have given me the impression it is
just another unrealistic Hollywood tear-jerker so based on yer review I'm
gonna save my money and wait for the definitive Carlos Hathcock movie that
will never be made and never could be because he was unrepentant.

"Enemy At The Gates" remains the unequaled sniper movie and possibly the
best WWII movie.

Yeah, the biography of Hathcock was far more authentic than Hollywood pap.

I just saw a quirky western where January Jones kicks major butt.
Ed Harris is a riot in it too. So too Eduardo Noriega who was also in the best South American western I've seen, Blackthorne (which is about Butch Cassidy many years after escaping the federales).

Inherent Vice...I thought Josh Brolin (LAPD detective Bigfoot Bjornsen) was incredible in this film based on Thomas Pynchon's novel about a hippy, dope-smokin' private investigator Doc Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) in LA during the Nixon administration. This is a slow-paced film with an intricate plot that will likely attain cult film status similar to The Big Lebowski. The scenes in the high rent looney bin are brilliant.

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography

Streamable on Netflix.

Very watchable, esp. for those of us of that generation, with skaterat histories.

In particular, the profiles of Tony Hawk & Rodney Mullen are especially engrossing. A great quote of Mullen, on Hawk's success:

“He won everything…or close to it.
That creates…so much more pressure
Because there’s no gratification in winning
There’s only upholding something so you don’t lose it.

And it is staggering…it usurps the joy…
It’s like…a Kafka short story…
You build something but you can’t live in the house because you sit around guarding it.”

Inherent Vice.

Not a fan.

The sound mixing was abysmal. Couldn't hear much of it, and turning up the volume blew my eardrums out on the remainder.

There were certainly good moments, but "intricate plot"? Seemed more like a snarled 1970's macrome hammock to me...something you could untangle if you wanted to, but would rather just fall asleep on.

High and Low

"Toshiro Mifune is unforgettable as Kingo Gondo, a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a cold-blooded kidnapper in High and Low (Tengoku to jigoku), the highly influential domestic drama and police procedural from director Akira Kurosawa. Adapting Ed McBain’s detective novel King’s Ransom, Kurosawa moves effortlessly from compelling race-against-time thriller to exacting social commentary, creating a diabolical treatise on contemporary Japanese society."

Kurosawa meets film noir. Really good!

I recently finished a year and a half long stint of work up in Yosemite, and I think I only watched two films in that time. Now that I'm back down in the city and have a lot of free time I've been doing a lot of catching up. Here are my thoughts on the last 8 films I've watched, all of which were released either this year or last. Roughly ordered from best to worst. I have a BA in Film Studies, so you know you can trust my judgement.

Ex Machina (5/5)
A beautifully done scifi thriller. Great characters and acting. A story that keeps you guessing. It could have been a bit more subtle in some regards - at times if feels like you're being beaten over the head with it's philosophical messages. But overall a wonderful film. They even managed to keep the runtime down to 1h45, which is exceedingly rare these days.

Mad Max: Fury Road (5/5)
Awesome action scenes and absolutely gorgeous visual effects. A straightforward plot that actually makes sense. Well developed characters with clearly defined motives. This is really the whole package. Probably the best action film to come out of Hollywood since 2013's "Riddick". This should be held up as the archetype of how to correctly do a big budget summer blockbuster.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (3/5)
I liked the new characters and actors, and for the most part the film is enjoyable. However it really gets bogged down with fan-service and pandering to nostalgia. All the stuff with Solo, Chewbacca, Leia, C3PO, Luke, et al, just gets in the way of moving the story forward and developing the new characters. And about that story, it's dumb. Mainly the characters just chase some mcguffin around, and then there's a Death Star randomly thrown in there so we can have a big battle at the end.

The Revnant (2/5)
Beautiful at times, boring at others. A cliche wild-west revenge plot without any likable characters makes it hard to stay interested. Not a terrible film, but definitely uninspired "Oscar bait". Maybe it's because I spend a lot of time enjoying nature first-hand, so sitting down for 156 minutes of trees swaying in the wind doesn't really do it for me.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2/5)
Mindless superhero action movie. Slightly better than the first Avengers. If all you want is colorful CGI action scenes, then it will entertain.

Batman vs Superman (2/5)
This is basically Avengers but it takes itself way, way too seriously. The whole middle of the film is super boring. Character motives are paper thin. The plot is stupid. Jesse Eisenberg apparently didn't get the memo that he was cast as Lex Luthor, and played the Joker instead. It picks up at the end with some enjoyable action scenes, mainly Batman going on a rescue mission and then the big 3 vs 1 grand finale. Hans Zimmer's music is great.

Zoolander 2 (1/5)
The original Zoolander is one of my all-time favorite comedy films so I was looking forward to this. However, No. 2 is just a shitty rip-off of the first one which brings nothing new. Most of the jokes and gags are straight-up lifted from the original film. You can see all the best material by just watching the trailer.

Spectre (1/5) The Daniel Craig films have been really hit or miss. Casino Royal and Skyfall are two of the best in the James Bond series (I've seen 25 of them, and would put both those in the top 5), while Quantum of Solace and Spectre are a couple of the worst. A totally nonsensical plot that tries to hide it's absurdity under a layer of convolution and obscurity. All of the worst Bond cliches are present. You could have the exact same scenes, and with just a slight shift of tone it would be an Austin Powers film. Oh, the main girl has suddenly decided that she can't be sucked back into the world of espionage and assassins, so she is saying her goodbyes and leaving. Yeah, I'm sure that's the last we'll see of her then. No way she'll be captured by the villain and need to be rescued by Bond in the final climax...

Best movie of 2016???? Easily: Hell Or High Water

It's a modern day Texas cowboy/bank robber/brotherhood movie. Score was done by Nick Cave & Warren Ellis. The soundtrack is incredible if you like the alt-country music. It's currently getting 8.2/10 on IMDB, and 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.

There's a new kid country singer, Colter Wall, that has a really great song on the movie, he's 20-something years old and has a deeper voice than Johnny Cash.
