I feel these are the hardest to get.

To catch the true essence of a wide scene is the most difficult for me.

To show the whole expanse within a memory.

Q-Ball, your pics are killer. Especially like the young heron in Belize.

But your pics are too good for ST's hosting and cramped, framed embedding. Look at Prezwoodz, TTster, The Alpine's shots just under yours - they kill it with photography skills, yes, but the way their pics are embedded here just make for a better viewing format.

Host elsewhere, use IMG tags, set size to something bigger! ~800X600 at minimum for such good shots as yours.

Gorgeous stuff!!

I never really bother with these, 'cause I don't have the glass for it. Hell, since I tend to just shoot birds and bugs (tele and macro) I don't even have a decent walking around lens. Any thoughts on a decent wide-angle that won't break the bank? I shoot Canon and have wondered about the 24mmL, 10-22mm, 17-40L, and a few others. This Sigma 8-16mm is getting good reviews too.

Never gotten my hands on any of these though.

willoughby, you really don't need the high end glass to shoot landscapes. all those photos i posted upthread were shot with cheap-ish lenses. the top two were with a 105mm sigma macro and the lightning one was a $100 70-300mm canon. i think a tripod (and of course the light) is more important than lens quality, but having nice glass definitely helps.

Thanks Weezy,
I know I don't need high end glass, and goodness knows I can't afford any, but I do need something. Nine times out of 10 I have my 100-400 on, and it's absolutely rubbish for landscapes. The Macro is out of the question. I've been thinking about something with some wide angle capability for years, so just trying to solicit opinions. And honestly I'm wondering more about the utility of various ranges than anything else. That Sigma 8-16 sure looks sweet, but I wonder how much I'd use it vs, hell, even a straight-up 50mm.

John Hansen: The color saturation and balance in that first shot is awesome. ND grad? Or all natural?

And Brassnuts, that spring in boulder pic should be in a landscape instructional book somewhere. Classic composition.

With modern digi darkroom/photoshop stuff for blending multiple shots, and autobracketing, you can pretty much replicate the ND grad filters, but I still carry a couple big square ones.

20mm prime is definitely my fave climbing/landscape lens.

I have seen photography change so much in the last ten years. There is a shitload of digital manipulation going on. It has made the art more like graphic arts.

The composition can't be faked, and there are some nice compositions here. Now who doesn't shop their photos?

If I had Photoshop I'd use it. It's a great program. Digital has made most photographers lazy, but I hated waiting for my film to develope only to find I was overexposed on all my shots. Now you can shoot and see the image instantly. You know right away if it is good or not.

Good Question...
Feb 15, 2014 - 11:11pm PT
Base, you have a point.
Though even with film there is always some post processing needed and done (think Ansel) but I'm glad to leave the chemicals behind. I use Lightroom mostly and work hard to do as little as possible. It does bug me to see some images pumped up so much though. One needs to work with the available light rather than create that light IMHO.

Having said that, image manipulation can be pretty darn cool. Just check some of Peter H's work for example.
I think though that as long as one is honest about their work there is room for all of it.

nice photos, all

anyone have recs on a light and compact but sturdy tripod and ballhead that would be suitable both for backcountry travels as well as in the city (about 70% of my shooting is backcountry and 30% urban/near a car)? I was just looking at the Gitzo website but the number of models is overwhelming

I have a D7000 with two lenses: 35mm prime and 11-16mm wide. Neither lens is super-heavy, nor is the camera body itself

thanks

ms55401 - I have the GItzo GT1542T for backcountry. With a light RRS or Markins ballhead its a great combination. In a pinch I've even used it with my Nikon D800e.

Another vote for the Gitzo GT1542T with a Markins Q Ball Q3 head. Super light and incredibly rigid. Once you get over the price, it's all good :-)

TT, it's all schist to me, unless it's granito.

This was taken 100'feet up the ridge to the left.
It's purdy if it's schist! Rotten, but purdy.

One of my favorite places to shoot pictures is White Sands National Monument in S New Mexico. The sand is not typical quartz sand. It is gypsum from a dry lake to the north. Gypsum is one of the softest minerals, and its texture is velvety soft....

There is a really cool glyph site north of Alamagordo:

This is the coolest glyph of them all, but I couldn't get the right light for a good shot. I would fer sure spend a few days waiting on the right sunset for this one.
