Happy birthday my friend, sorry I had to cancel at the last minute.

As usual, Crack-a-Go-Go is impressive (although he told me he fell once today before leading through - he did part of the crux "wrong" and instead of trying to re-set properly, he just tried to power through).

But I wonder whether a lead he did in Pinnacles in December is even more impressive.

In December Ron led all three pitches of Shake and Bake, an old Tom Higgins route on the Balconies at Pinnacles. Shake and Bake has a well-deserved reputation for being a great, great climb. And it's equally famous for it's runouts. Although "only 5.10a," Shake and Bake makes every Pinns climber I know nervous. It'd be easy to take a 50 foot lob off it if one fell at the wrong place.

And Ron didn't just lead all three pitches; he got some bad information about which bolts had been replaced. So he didn't see three older, rusty (but still 3/8") bolts. He led this runout horror show without clipping one bolt on the second pitch and while missing two bolts on the third pitch. Yikes! But he kept it together and pulled it off.

On the other hand, he was only 72 years old then.

He used to relentlessly work that ultra-thin layback at Swan Slab, and with his Curry uniform still on.

Happy birthday, Ron! Will always remember the time a few years ago that my husband and I happened to be there and witnessed your annual climb of that great pitch - wishing you many more years of all the same grace and power we saw in you then!

Ron had his limbs retrofitted with an internal hydraulic power system. The first of its kind. When he flexes you can see the attachment screws and piston rods.

Somebody please show him a nice sport climb for next year.

Cheers Ron

Happy birthday indeed Ron. Bravo to leading Shake and Bake but please clip ALL the bolts on your next ascent. Chris Vandiver and I put in as many as the steepness, sun and clock allowed on the FA, which made it pretty run in a few places. No need to skip any!

Best wishes for many more climbing days.

I just got word from Ron that he led Crack-a-Go-Go in perfect style today. He was very, very pleased.

Yesterday was his 76th birthday.

I'm only sorry that I wasn't there - with the weather wet, he and I agreed he'd have to put it off for a while. Apparently it was dry enough today when he went up to check it out. He found a local friend to belay (that's one advantage of living 10 minutes drive from the Cookie Cliff).

Happy birthday Ron!

Actually the headline on this post is three years out of date... Yesterday, Feb. 4, 2017 was my 76th birthday. It was too wet yesterday Feb.4,to do the Go-Go so I did it today, the 5th, before the rain started. This thing is getting more difficult every year!!

Welcome to the 73 arena Ron....we should tie in together sometime and see what a 146+ year old rope can do. Happy B-day from Patagonia!

Thread titles cannot be modified. So, Ron, you will just be stuck at 73, I guess. Well, you are defying this aging thing anyway.

Mad props to the proud lead, Ron! Big hugs to you and Liz!

Andy2,
Cool photo, but which Parkline?
This is not the one in the Yosemite guidebook - the road is between it and the river.
Or did you intend to upload a different photo with this caption?

I know it's not Parkline Slab. It was my feeble idea of a joke. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

But where is it?
