Well I am! The NFL season and the Super Bowl have come and gone, and next week pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training. I know there are some other SERIOUS baseball freaks here on Super Topo, since I recall sitting around a campfire with Ed Hartouni and discussed the Red Sox and Rockies at a Facelift.

All I'm hoping is my Rockies don't "three-peat" as the dungeon dwellers in NL West. My son and I already have some primo seats for at least 5 games, but not sure what we'll be seeing.

My predictions (Bwahahaha!) for the NL:

Eastern Division: Atlanta
Central Division: St. Louis
Western Division: LA

For the AL:

Eastern Division: Yankees (sorry Ed!)
Central Division: Cleveland
Western Division: Oakland

At this point, feel free to come on in and tell me I'm fullaschitt!

Now that football season is over here in Seattle we get the Mariners back for some comic relief. They now have Robinson Cano on a ten year contract with no one to hit on either side of him. Maybe they can convince Russell Wilson to break out his glove again. Its going to be a long season....

Hell Yes!!

Direct TV got quite an earful when I tried to tune in to MLB extra innings today and it told me I was not a subscriber. WHAT! The game must be coming to a close, and I'm on hold for tech support. By the time it was fixed, the game was over. I'm sure that the Yankees lost today because I could not watch.

I think my pitching is going to be better, but I haven't seen an explosive offense yet. It is early.

Baseball unites me and my sisters. Two of them are facing a very difficult year. I'm depending on the boys of summer to lift their spirits.

Going to Safeco to see the Yanks in June. I will be the most rowdy person there. The Seattle crowd may be noisy for football, but they don't seem to have the same lust for baseball.

Reilly-

It's the cost of these overpaid prima donnas! Larry Walker during an interview, laughed and said it was ridiculous what ballplayers were paid--for playing a "kid's game." At the time, he was making $15 Million a year with the Rockies.

During the 1920s, my Dad played for Danville, Illinois in the 3-I League. He broke his collarbone sliding headfirst into a base. They took him to the doctor, gave him a train ticket home, and $20. That was the end of his professional career. He was under contract to the St. Louis Cardinals at the time.

Fast forward 30 years; during the early 1950s, Stan the Man Musial was the highest paid professional athlete at $200,000 a year. Figure the dollar and purchasing power change, that translates to ~ $4 Million in todays money. These days we see $200 Million professional sports contracts. RIDICULOUS!

P.S. Puig is a real Pussy!

So I had some free tickets to the Dodgers last year, good ones too. We were the last row of
the field level so our seats were about 18" above the lower concourse. About the third inning
a woman walking by just behind me asks me if some money fell out of my pocket. I look down
and when I had pulled my cell phone out a good five minutes before about $100 bucks wound
up below my seat with hundreds of people walking by! And the Bums won, too!

I'm a Dodger fan inside & out, but the game against the Rockies a few nights ago was pretty lame. 5th inning, Dodgers are up 5-2, and all of the first-line players are pulled and replaced by the benchwarmers...matter of fact, they all bail and head to the clubhouse!

Meanwhile, the Rockies catch fire and tie it up, pushing the game to 12 innings!!!

WTF? I can understand preserving your first line players for the playoffs, but howzabout at least hanging around to support your teammates?

Even tho' I'm a die hard Rockies fan (and my wish came true--not the cellar dweller this year, that's the D-Backs!), I'll pull for the Dodgers in the playoffs. I don't think they'll get past the Nationals, and are pretty evenly matched by the Cards. The Pirates are interesting, but are lucky to have made the playoffs, and won't get past the G-men.

American League? Don't really care... Athletics? Maybe, but Angels are looking pretty strong. That said, Baltimore is the real dark horse and could take it all.

Edit: As I was writing the above, the AL WC game just went into extra innings.

The NL WC game is tonight, and the G-Men (a.k.a. the "Midgets", in Rockies parlance), will play the Pirates. Two of the best pitchers in all baseball are squaring off: Edinson Volquez for the Bucs, and Madison Bumgarner for the G-Men. It should be a low scoring affair. Prediction: Toss-up, and it comes down to the Bullpens.

The Cardinals and Dodgers play tomorrow night. That series will go 5 games, since the pitching will again limit damages by both batting orders. Prediction: Cardinals in 5, based on managerial skills and playoff experience.

Washington then plays the winner of the WC game tonight. The Nationals probably have the most underrated pitching staff of the teams thus-far mentioned, and could be the NL Champion.

What I truly love about baseball is the complete unpredictability in the sport, and that's why they still play the games on the field; no computer simulation can ever compensate for the way the "ball bounces."

Beane leaving? Not a chance.
How many MLB teams can say they have made the playoffs the last 3 years in a row? Even 3 times in a decade is good. While it would be nice to make it to the Series, a small market team like Oakland doing what it does is almost unheard of in modern baseball. There are plenty of teams frothing at the mouth to have Beane's skills. The team is going to likely look a lot different next year, but not in the upper office.

I don't think the Angels have the pitching to win it all.
Dodgers vs Orioles with the Blue Crew winning it in 7 IF Ryu can win

The game between Giants and Pirates was as I predicted earlier, but wasn't even close. The G-Men now square off against the Nationals. Da Boyz in Blue, a.k.a. Dodgers, play the Cards. I'm predicting the Cards in 5 games. The G-Men have used Bumgarner hard, so I figure the Nationals in 4.

I agree that the Angels won't be in the WS; I am guessing you're correct about the Orioles. Don't think the Dodgers will make it all the way there, and it'll be a short distance between cities: Washington vs. Baltimore. Washington in 7 games.

Broke, the Cards got no hitting and their starters aren't worthy of carrying
the Dodgers starters' rosin bag. Their pen might be better but the Dodgers'
bats have been smokin' of late, finally. Washington has one good starter
and, again, their bats don't come close to the Dodgers', the best in all
of baseball.

Orioles have some 8th inning magic going: 8 runs in the 8th last night to put the game out of reach, 4 runs today in the 8th to come from behind for the lead, and the win.

Big bats silenced by outstanding arms...

or not, as was the case with the Angels' less-than-outstanding arms and KC's surprisingly big bats (KC was last in HRs in the majors this year, the only team to finish with less than 100).

I think the new playoff format favors the wildcard teams, at least in the 5 game division series. It used to be the best vs. the best, now it is the best vs. the hottest, and the hottest teams seem to have the advantage, IMHO. How else does the team with the best record in baseball for 2014 lose 3 straight to a team that would have finished 9 games back of it if they had been in the same division. And there is that forced lay-off that the best teams have to deal with while the wild cards battle it out. The best team has lost its rhythm and the wildcard winner is riding a huge wave of momentum by the time they face off.

Apparently MLB had a 'talk' with Fox execs last night about Fox showing up
that psycho ump yesterday with the replays. Notice that they're not showing
the strike zone thingy today? At least two of those 'balls' to Peralta
were strikes.

Broke, I can't imagine Mattingly would pull him at less than a 100 unless

This ump is as wacko as yesterday's. That first strike to Crawford was a
good 6" below his knees.

I can't stand Joe Buck but I do like Harold Reynolds. But like so many
ball players and announcers they send me into hysterics when they expose
their ignorance of physics. Harold just noted how the ball 'picked up speed'
when it got by Kershaw. Now I will grant you that the ball could translate
a little rotational energy into velocity but could a human being even see it?
And then there is the endless blather about how 'heavy' the air is when they
are referring to humidity. Will somebody please put a stop to this? MLB
should host an off-season get together and learn these doods up a little.

I somehow can't see Mattingly burning up Kershaw, and I'm guessing he could be done after another inning. Don't want to ruin that arm! If the game remains scoreless, the BPs will take over the game. If Da Boyz in Blue hold on and get back into the series, Kershaw will be needed for the NLDS.

Well, ever since my Dodgers got the boot, I've been conflicted about who to root for in the NL for the WS.

Giants? There is such a longstanding, traditional 'ick' attitude from Dodgers towards the Giants, it's pretty hard to consider backing them.

Cards? They put my Dodgers down this year (and last!).

But wait....whoever wins the NLCS is gonna meet the unstoppable buzzsaw of the Royals, which would undoubtedly be a bloody mess for that unsuspecting NL team....

Yes, that clarifies things for the NLCS.....

Dear Royals fans, rather than wasting money on a replica hat, just strap a large rubber dildo to your head. EVERYONE will know who you support. Police in Kansas City responded to a call of a vehicle break-in. The owner of the vehicle said he two tickets to a Royals game on his dash and someone busted his window and left two more Royals tickets. Reckless Driver A Royals fan liked to amuse himself by scaring every Yankees fan he saw strutting down the street in an obnoxious NY pinstripe shirt. He would swerve his van as if to hit them, then swerve back just missing them. One day while driving along, he saw a priest. He thought he would do a good deed, so he pulled over and asked the priest, "Where are you going, Father?" "I'm going to give Mass at St. Francis church, about two miles down the road," replied the priest. "Climb in, Father. I'll give you a lift!" The priest climbed into the passenger seat, and they continued down the road. Suddenly, the driver saw a Yankees fan walking down the road, and he instinctively swerved as if to hit him. But, as usual, he swerved back onto the road just in time. Even though he was certain that he had missed the guy, he still heard a loud THUD. not knowing where the noise came from, he glanced in his mirrors but still didn't see anything. He then remembered the priest, and he turned to the priest and said, "sorry Father, I almost hit that Yankees fan." "That's OK," replied the priest "I got him with the door." Better at Sex There were two men, one was a Royals fan and the other was a Yankees fan. These men were both madly in love with the same woman. So the woman challenged that whichever man does a better job at having sex with her would be her boyfriend. Both men accepted the challenge. That night, the woman had sex with the Royals fan and then the other night had sex with the Yankees fan. The next day the woman chose the Yankees fan to be her boyfriend. Shocked and outraged, the Royals fan asked why she didn't choose him. She replied by saying, "You, like your team not only come up short but always finish early!" Career Day It's career day in elementry school where each student talks about what their dad does. Little Johnny is last, and finally the teacher calls on him to talk about his dad. Johnny comes to the front of the class. 'My daddy is a dancer at a gay bar. He takes off his clothes for other men, and if they pay him enough money, he goes into the alley and performs sex acts on them.' The teacher is shocked, and she calls for an early recess for the rest of the class. She sits down with Johnny and asks him if this is really true about his dad. Johnny says; 'No, but I was too embarrassed to say he played for the Kansas City Royals.' First Grade A first grade teacher explains to her class that she is a Kansas City Royals fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they were Royals fans, too. Not really knowing what a Royals fan was, but wanting to be like their teacher, hands explode into the air. There is, however, one exception. A girl named Mary has not gone along with the crowd. The teacher asks her why she has decided to be different. "Because I'm not a Royals fan." "Then," asks the teacher, "what are you?" "Why I'm proud to be a New York Yankees fan.", boasts the little girl. The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red. She asks Mary why she is a Yankees fan. "Well, My Dad and Mom are Yankees fans, and I'm a Yankees fan, too!" The teacher is now angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly. "What if your mom was a moron, and your dad was a moron, What would you be then?" A pause, and a smile. "Then," says Mary, "I'd be a Royals fan." Father & Son A father and son are outside Kauffman Stadium, and the young son is asking his father to buy him a "Tigers Suck" T-shirt. The father hesitates, but finally tells his son, "You can have the shirt if you promise never to say that word." "That's right," says the T-shirt vendor, wanting to make the sale. "'Suck' isn't a very nice word." "No," replies the father. "I meant the word 'Tigers'."
