This morning on today with Tom Brokaw. Seems Tom let h off easy and fed him answers at difficult pauses. Sorry for reporting but spelling and comprehension bad this morning after climbing yesterday until the afternoon and the driving all night to get home with four of us in the car.

Didn't catch it all but he didn't seem very sorry. Was in Bozeman this weekend and it kind of makes me ill to think he is living in one of those mansions when he collected pennies from practically every school kid in america for a time to promote his cause. I think he did some good, but but not what he should have considering the money he collected.

And in your doubtful biography, Kathryn, because you will go down as someone who never made a difference in anyone's life, you will be recorded as the defender of a thief of children, reasoning that stealing from thousands of American children to enrich yourself is alright, as long as your scraps go to a very few even less advantaged children...maybe.

David Relin (spell the guy's name right) ended his own life for reasons we'll never know. He was, as stated above, "the actual writer." This is a fact that Mortenson all but denied UNTIL the account was called into question. Then he was quick to throw Relin under the bus (bad metaphor, sorry). The idea that Krakauer played a role in Relin's depression is absurd.

Award-winning “Three Cups of Tea” author Greg Mortenson has agreed to pay $1 million to a nonprofit he co-founded to settle allegations that he misspent charity money on personal items such as plane flights for family vacations and iTunes downloads, the Montana attorney general said Thursday.
In a 44-page report, Attorney General Steve Bullock said a yearlong investigation by his office concluded that Mortenson mismanaged his nonprofit, the Bozeman-Mont.-based Central Asia Institute, and personally profited from it.
“Mortenson’s pursuits are noble and his achievements are important. However, serious internal problems in the management of CAI surfaced,” Bullock said in the report.

Krakauer is a self promoting publicity hound who doesn't done much good for society as far as I can see.
Greg Mortenson is a person who started off with good intentions, carried through with his intentions and efforts, and actually accomplished a ton of good work, building schools and educating kids who never would have had that chance. How much good work has he done? Probably far more then all his haters combined. Is there a chance he got lost along the way, probably, but does that erase all the good he has done? No, he has Jon Krakauer and company to thank for that.

For years my wife and I sent $1,000 every Christmas to CAI. It was the only check, I wrote all year, I enjoyed writing. I thought Greg's work was a shining light in sea of corporate nonprofits that spent the majority of their donor's money on expenses, salaries and ostentatious galas.
During the Gulf War #2 Iraqi invasion I thought my money represented a real opportunity to help children, especially young girls, obtain a decent education and a possible path out of poverty. Greg printed an impressive magazine that illustrated all the great work of CAI. I was thoroughly impressed and convinced this is where my money should go.
I was impressed by Mortensen's online display of his tax return on the CAI website. His story was so compelling.
If his story is a fabrication he deserves the wrath from the State of Montana. If Mortensen used CAI as his "personal ATM" it saddens me greatly.
I am much more careful where I donate today. Honesty and transparency is rare.....thanks Greg for making a cynical old man even more cynical.

At least as far as "Three Cups of Deceit" goes, all the proceeds are going to a different charity. So Krakauer is being enriched how....?

Thank you Studly for some perspective. Certainly the man is not perfect, but he has nevertheless done far more good than anyone on this site has. I'm not saying that he isn't culpable. He is, sadly, but he nevertheless built 131 schools where there were none previously. The jerk. Spare me the pennies from schoolkids bullsh#t. I find the mob a bit too ready to lynch.

In 1998, as a tribute to his companions lost on Everest, Krakauer established the Everest '96 Memorial Fund at the Boulder Community Foundation with earnings from Into Thin Air. As of 2012, the fund had donated more than $1.7 million to such charities as the American Himalayan Foundation, Educate the Children, Veterans Helping Veterans Now, the Access Fund, and the Boulder Valley Women's Health Center.

In 2011, Krakauer published Three Cups of Deceit: How Greg Mortenson, Humanitarian Hero, Lost His Way. All of his proceeds from this latter work have been donated to the Stop Girl Trafficking program at the American Himalayan Foundation.

October 9, 2013: Federal appeals court affirms dismissal of case against CAI and Mortenson
BOZEMAN, Mont. – Central Asia Institute was pleased to learn Wednesday that the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has dismissed the purported class-action lawsuit against it and CAI Cofounder Greg Mortenson.
The federal appeals court ruling upholds U.S. District Court Judge Sam E. Haddon’s dismissal of the case with prejudice in Great Falls, Mont., in May 2012.
A three-judge appeals panel ruled that the plaintiffs’ “conclusory statements and minimal factual allegations” on the allegations of fraud, deceit, racketeering, or breach of contract were vague and insufficient, according to court documents.
Also, “the [lower] court acted within its discretion in dismissing the complaint and denying leave to amend. Plaintiffs have already had multiple opportunities to amend, even after the defects in the pleadings were identified in extensive briefing[s].”
U.S. Appeals Court Judges Barry G. Silverman, William A. Fletcher, and Consuelo Maria Callahan unanimously agreed the case was “suitable for decision without oral argument” and concluded: “The district court properly dismissed the complaint.”
“Clearly I’m pleased with the court’s decision,” said CAI Board Chairman Steve Barrett. “I’m also happy to report that we have satisfactorily completed all specific actions outlined in the Assurance of Voluntary Compliance that CAI signed with the Montana Attorney General’s office in 2012.”
The AVC was part of a 2012 settlement agreement following the AG’s inquiry into allegations that CAI had, over a period of years, failed to maintain adequate financial controls, governance, and stewardship processes. CAI has since made numerous internal changes. The AG’s office has indicated it is satisfied and did not propose any action beyond those enumerated in the AVC.
“The conclusion of both of these weighty matters – the appeal and the AVC requirements – allows CAI to rededicate its energy and resources to the important work of promoting education, especially for girls, in remote areas of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. As we’ve said before, no other NGO does what we do in these locales with such a small team of dedicated individuals.”
CAI has worked with communities in these mountainous regions for 17 years to build and/or support nearly 300 schools, 42 women’s literacy and vocational centers, 10 scholarship programs, 31 public health (potable water, midwifery, and disaster-relief) projects, and more than a dozen community programs.

I'm no lawyer, even though I have friends who are, but the court's dismissal
may very well be due to the plaintiffs' shoddy presentation and not actually
the validity of their claims. Remember, the US legal system is predicated
upon dotting all the i's, crossing all the t's, and job security, not whether
a case actually has merit.

The dismissal of the lawsuit does not mean that Mortenson did not do anything wrong. Both Mortenson and the CAI have both admitted they screwed up.
This was a bad lawsuit to begin with. The lawyers were trying to argue that anyone who bought Mortenson's book was entitled to damages. If they won, they (the lawyers) would have gotten all the benefits. The people who bought books would have gotten only pennies or nothing. Also they didn't make much effort to present a strong case.
