I was woke by a dawn phone call that my neighbor's cabin was on fire. We arrived to find it fully engulfed. we were grateful for the small amount of rain we have gotten here in Northern California. It could have been much worse! No one was seriously hurt. Likely a flue fire. This is a grim reminder as we enter the season of regular wood fires to check yer flue.

Good advice.

One of my best buddies lost his No. Cal. cabin home to a fireplace-related fire. Damn thing burned straight to the ground...they lost just about everything.

A properly installed flue should be checked before each season of burning. If it's used year round prolly twice. An improperly installed flue should not be used until it is fixed. We had two structure fires here in a week. one was improperly installed. the other was not cleaned before use. Neither resulted in serious injury, tho obviously it could have been much worse.
