I think most people prefer to follow this on MP.com, but today was a good day for climbers.

That's a real shame. You hate to hear about stuff like that.

NOT!!!

How do you know when a mining company is lying?
Their mouth is open.

doesn't look like it is over yet...good news for now ...i loved that place but stopped going due to the constant mining noise and lights at night. the free camping was a big draw.

"The cultural and sacred sites of Apache Leap and Oak Flat are located on public land and not on an Indian reservation,” Lujan said. “Although these sites are not on an Indian reservation, they are still sacred to the San Carlos Apache, the Yavapai Indian Tribe, and other tribes in Arizona — just as a Catholic church, where I practice my faith, is considered a holy place even though it’s not located in Vatican City.”

That's right. Sacred.

Great news! I was wondering what had happened with Oak Flat lately. This is one bill that needs stonewalling.

... supporters of the mine say it would create more than 3,700 jobs, generate more than $61billion in economic activity over the 66-year life of the mine, and supply 25percent or more of the nation’s demand for copper.

I've always been of the opinion that if the locals would start catering to tourists, hikers, and climbers they could generate the jobs and revenue that they so desperately need. The tourist industry doesn't have that juicy "billion dollar" profit, but it will last WAY longer than "66 years" of mining that leaves you with a useless wasteland. I'd also heard most(if not all) of that copper had been promised to China.. not sure if that's true or not.

“Today’s setback will not discourage me from my continued fight for this important Arizona jobs bill,” Gosar said in a statement. “I am disappointed that a mine of national significance that would have employed so many Native Americans was opposed by the leadership of the San Carlos Apache Tribe — a tribe plagued with excessively high unemployment and poverty."

Really? Who are they kidding? The mine expansion, if approved, would have a call for skilled engineers - likely those not even from Arizona. What jobs would be available for the property stricken local tribes? Gack, it's ridiculous, the whole thing.

Thanks Curt for not losing steam on the fight to Save Oak Flat.

My thought too Susan.. they make ZERO promise to the Native American tribes to employ anyone. The fact that the mine can generate all that $ and employment does not mean it will even remotely help the locals. Bringing in outside labor is assured, given the reality of the industry and (I'm guessing)cultural predudice.

I'm happy many people have not lost sight of this. 66 years is just one generation then it's gone forever and the land is useless. All that money will be long gone.. whisked off to coporate execs and foreign manufacturing while the tribe still sits destitute. Keep out the mine and the great-grandchildren of this generation have use of the resource.

Superior is in a beautiful setting at the base of Apache Leap and they could diversify their economy--if they just followed the lead of Bisbee, Jerome, etc. But, in order for that to happen they first need to abandon the idea that their future is fully dependent on giving Resolution Copper carte blanche to devastate their community. The current mine plan calls for creating a 1,000 foot deep crater where Oak Flat is and piling 1.6 billion tons of toxic mine tailings on the west side of town. If the Superior lets that happen, it's pretty clear that any talk of expanding eco-tourism there is moot.

Like in a movie where the villain is all but dead and buried, only to rise up right out of the ground knife in hand while the music blares "WHEEE WHEEE WHEEE WHEEE WHEEE" climbers are about to get the shaft (natives too), while out of country interests get the mine.

From the Arizona Mining Reform Coalition:
"Contact your Senators today to remove the Oak Flat land exchange from the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

In a highly controversial move last week, the US House of Representatives buried the Oak Flat land exchange deep in the House version of the NDAA. For 10 years, the land exchange has failed to be become law for very good reasons:

It is the only bill before the US Congress that would give a Native American Sacred site on public land to a foreign mining company;
It would mean the largest loss of recreational rock climbing opportunities on public land
And it bypasses the normal process of permitting mines on public land. President Eisenhower placed Oak Flat off limits to mining 60 year ago and it remains an ecological, spiritual and recreational haven. "

Find your Senator here. http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm Just forgoe one nasty post on a politard ST thread to instead send your senator a quick note.

Nice Jay. My Senator hasn't responded, but it looks like Senator Coburn is pissed at all the bullshit and earmarks in the defense bill and has it stalled it in committee for financial reasons. Good news for climbers perhaps.

What that means is a full senate vote, your senator needs to hear your voice.
