I may have a lead on a job here in Vegas as a Rope Access
high rise window washer.
I will know more tomorrow when the supervisor of the company calls me back.
He seemed interested in me as He did call me back after my initial
call to the company yesterday. He called me today and said he would call back tomorrow because he was involved in a project.

I sure hope and have my fingers crossed that I can get a job with this company, because I am getting real depressed staying in California
all the time, away from my Wife, working washing windows there.

It's been real rough on me, I've only spent a total now of 12 days
since Jan 11, with my Wife in Vegas. The rest of the time has been in Calif
living in a 8x10 travel trailer. That is getting old real fast, but I do what I have to, to support my Wife and Fids.

I work for the company in question that Dwain is hoping to get on with. As a longtime lurker here on ST I am already familiar with him and as far as I'm concerned endorsements from the TacoStand should be more than enough to hire him on the spot.

Unfortunately just as I was nearing the end of my probationary period as the Las Vegas supervisor I managed to give myself a couple of different black eyes (Apparently sleeping with one of the residents at one of the luxury high rises that we work on is frowned upon by my company. Although to be fair, I am recently divorced and new to Vegas, the girl was 10 years younger than me and she made the first move, and I didn't want to be rude to someone who is used to getting what they want.) and I do not currently have the authority to hire people.

Getting back to the point though...Dwain needs your help! I'm pretty sure my boss has written Dwain off on account of his age so some badass and credible references would really go a long ways towards helping the cause.

We all know that Dwain is safe in the vertical plane and that he can wash windows with the best of them. What we need is someone (who preferably works in the Rope Access Industry) who can assure my boss that Dwain is tough enough and fit enough to work circles around guys half his age.

Thanks in advance,

Sam

I am Sam,, To OLD?? He still cranks hard rock routes a thousand feet high in the red rocks. Tell the boss hiring to consider that, and the fact that he is MATURE, will be on time day in day out and accomplish with excellent results any damm task he dares assign him.. Rope access safety>??? Who do you think trained those industries?? Guys like Dan Osman, Climber that is who..

Dwain is a VERY experienced ans still quite active climber with rope skills light years ahead of that accesss industry. Experience is smart and smart people hire experienced. Cosmic is experienced in both heights and windows. With the maturity to perform above expectations because that is his normal routine.

speaking of the Cosmic, might anyone have a power cord for a macbook pro model A1150 they arent using anymore?

and RJ,, age discrimination in this un employed market of millions is STANDARD..

I applied to a near by mine a while back- i have much equipment experience. Got the interview not the job. Met one of the interviewers at a party of all places much later, and he after being plied with libations told me that A) they dont like guys with experience- they get bored too easily in a haul truck, and B) my age meant certain insurance claims down the road from health issues which they avoid like the plague.

Sh#t, I don't know? I know the battery on it isn't great but it should work plugged in. FECCK! If the light on the power cord is on then it should be charging. If not it's the cord. Tell him to keep it plugged in for a bit then try to restart it. Hope it works out...

Everyone needs to keep on keeping their fingers crossed dammit! This thing ain't over yet.

I called Dwain again yesterday and spoke with him for over half an hour to let him know that he is still in the running and to give him as much ammunition as possible before he talks to my boss later this afternoon.

Look, we all know that Dwain is more than qualified, but unfortunately the guy with the authority to hire people just doesn't believe that someone more than twice his age is capable of keeping up with the physical demands of our job.

I know how my boss thinks and I want to arrange for Cosmic to come out and do a working interview before the end of the month. Prior to that though it would be huge if one of the Silverbacks like Donini or Cosgrove or Ammon etc. wrote a personal letter of recommendation on Dwain's behalf.

PUllin' here for Cozmik. The guy gets stuff done. I spoze the only way us old farts can "prove it" is to be given a probationary period in which we can, in fact, "prove it".

I hope this employer provides that opportunity.

I Am Sam..

How about suggesting to your boss to give Cosmic a 2 week trial. Experience can more then make up for older age. Experience lets you streamline your actions making you more efficient and thus quicker. Especially in areas where extreme safety is required.

I would bet Cosmic would agree to a two week trail with no hard feelings if it doesn't work out.

That's better news Sam. I really hope they can give him a chance to come out and do an actual working interview before they write him off. The man has a rock solid work ethic and is competent.

Ageism unfortunately runs rampant. I was looking for job for 3 years straight. I got my first interview a few days after I altered my resume to say "10+ years retail management experience" in place of "20 years experience". F*#kers were doing the reverse math to figure out I was over 40.

Working on the job for a day or two is how I almost always prove myself to perspective employers

That's sometimes the only thing that works. I once saw an ad for a job on the deck in a shingle mill, went down, and got told "Well, you seem like a nice guy, but this is a physically tough job, and you're just not big and strong enough to swing a nine-pound hammer all day."

So I said "Well, I'm here, and you need a guy on the deck, so why not put me out there? If I can't handle the hammer, you'll know it in about ten minutes."

At the end of the shift the job was mine.

That one was sizism, not ageism, but the deal is the same. If you can just get a try-out you might be able to prove to them that you really are the guy they need. Good luck!

The age issue drives me crazy. What counts is work ethic and the ability to be able to do the job. I've worked with plenty of younger employees that:

1) have a poor work ethic and/or
2) are in poor physical shape. I can't believe how much sick time they take.

Maybe the guy that interviewed Dwain feels threatened because of Dwain's qualifications.....just a thought. Lynne
