We did a lot of bouldering on similar ridge systems west of Tonopah back in the 80's. Pretty good rock, endless routes/problems, but often dirty and TONS of spiders & scorpions!!!

Looks a lot like Vantage, aka Frenchman Coulee. Columnar basalt.

Damn nice cracks Jack! Basalt is one of my all time favorite types of rock. I was gonna guess Smith Rocks as well.

Mark - Are those Smith Rocks? They kinda' have that look but I imagine there aren't any FA's left so it's probably somewhere else.

By the way, the so-called "Lunar Crater Natural Landmark" near the mystery crags isn't really a crater but an old volcano that used to be on the moon...maybe.

I went off on one of the dirt/sand road, looking for a bivi by that big lava flow.
Bad idea, in my subaru! Plumes of sand out of my wheelwells, covering my windshield to the point where I had to put on my wipers. The car was swimming in the sand! Got out ok though.

Bachar,

Seen those crags as well as those around Black Rock (?) pass a few miles from there. Took a pit stop and was peeking at them. However, I had the fever for Yosemite and high tailed it back on my way. Someday ... I'll have some leisure time ....

Services? On a return trip to Salt Lake between Tonopah and Ely, at one point close to an hour and half went by before seeing another car coming the other way! Saw lots of wildlife though. It's the only place I've ever traveled where I top off the gas in the Subie at every opportunity (Delta - Ely - Tonopah).

Enjoy!

Gosh, it was weird, heart stop a beat, to see JB's name on a Thread. Thanks for bumping it. I went by there on the way to the Outdoor Retailers Conv. in Salt Lake first of August. Looks like a great place to check out. Took a short look and want to go back when it's a bit cooler.

Like many I'm sure ...... still missing the Dude. He was such an encourager. Know he'd be happy to see my small but steady progress in the climbing of the rock. :D Hola John.

Nice to see Bachar's name again on a thread and on the front page. Thanks for bumping.

So, no one has checked out this crag since John first posted this?

Could be really great basalt climbing, you never know until you get there.

I would also like to say that this looks really good for paragliding. It is great to find a long extended cliff with a steep summit ridge that is continious for a long, long distance. You can launch and fly ridge lift into the prevailing wind (easy to stay up) and then leave the ridge to go out across the plain searching for thermals. When you get them you are up and out. When you don't find them you can come back to the cliff and fly ridge to lift stay up. This could be a great place to do this. It could be the next "La Salina, of Baja" for the state of Nevada.

Looks very interesting for two great sports. I love places like that. Multi-element baby. Multi-element.

I've actually been here. The Lunar Crater is where they practiced landing the Lunar Module for the Appollo Missions.

I hiked around in the area during a geology field trip. I wasn't a climber back then, but my recollection is that there was definitely some potential.

If you like geology, it's a great place to view some incredible faulting!

Fun to just hike around and climb to the top for some views...maybe trundle some boulders on the way down!
