Dang, that might be the episode I saw filmed a little over a year ago (and have never seen); watch for teenaged japanese tourist girls waving into the camera in the credits.

Dude, we guided Hewell Howser and a cameraman up the trail to the top of Half Dome. A memorable gig.
He was the consumate populist all about engaging the plethora of society that gets up those cables. We pulled over on a ledge right above the steep part, I held the camera, (the actual cameraman was totally gripped and just continued crawling to the top. Hugh was unfazed by exposure and proceeded to interview many of the folks coming by. There were some facinating stories. One old cruiser was heading up to do a handstand on the summit for his 70 birthday. Apparantly he was third in the tradition started by his grandfather do bust that move on their respective 70th!
Many other tales, and those tourists do make an impressive effort to get all the way up there in day...Our party camped and partied with the trail crew.

I was surprised how many hikers recognized him. I had never seen his show.

The ranger is kind of mad about the tourists climbing on the rocks to get to lower fall.

Yeah it sounds pretty geeky and he is, a but my co-leader was a top local naturalist and we were promoting our hiking biz, (yosemite guides.com) so it was very valuable and we got to spread a little ecological literacy over the airways.

When I was assigned to fire station 35 in Hollywood Huell came by to do a short piece on firemen. I think it was just a excuse for him to hang out with a bunch of "handsome" young men. Anyway, he asked me if I had ever rescued a cat out of a tree. I replied that that kind of stuff only happens in the movies and that we only respond to real emergencies. Well the very next alarm came in as a baby stuck in a hole. Huell jumped on the truck and we responded to a home to find a young woman hysterical saying her baby was stuck in a hole. We grabbed out ropes and EMS equipment and hurried to the hole only to find a kitten stuck in the bottom of a footing hole in the backyard. Huell just couldn't get over it. It made his day. It was the one and only time I have in the last 20 years rescued a cat.

Yeah, Howser is gay and all of that and who gives a sh#t about that. I think it's incredible and refreshing how he is able to engage all kinds of people and get at their stories. He has a rare kind of sincerity (or at least it seems that way on screen) and enthusiasm that is quite different than all the silly narcissists that usually do interview shows.

I worked with a cameraman (a black guy) who was Hugh's main camera dude for years and he always had great things to say about Hugh, a trooper and a guy who wasn't afraid to work his ass off. How many guys his age would even bother to hike to the top of the Dome?? He's a pro in my book, and I've always loved his show.

He is not a person who's sex life I care to visualize or ponder...

I enjoyed working with him, as a hard working journalist of the rich world of "everyman" he has this funny way of switching on the tennessee folksy accent on a dime when the camera rolls and he is questioning someone. Also, the production is surprisingly lo-tech and simple, handheld, onsight and one cut.

He was a total trooper on our two day ascent of the dome, and made a good impression with the hardened trail crew campers, enjoying a spot of scotch etc.

Its a great show and I have visited many places featured in his show that I would have never know about.

But the last time I visited a site featured in his show it was a bust. The staionary steam engine at Griffith Park was down for repairs.

Sorry this turned into a "thing". I thought the fact that Huell is gay was common knowledge. It doesn't matter to me what he is as long as he keeps producing quality shows. What ever happened to his first camera guy? Raul, Hector? I forget his name but they were together for years and they made a great team, I noticed that he has a different camera guy now.
My favorite episode he has done to date was last year when he went to Death Valley to see Lake Manly at it's highest level in recent memory. Keep it up Huell:)

I love the guy... He did a show on the Ventura Mission when my team was conducting an archeological dig behind the church. He was very courteous and fun. I really liked his curiosity over our recovery work. He very much does have a gift for making people feel special.
If you ever see the episode, I'm the girl with the long hair wearing a straw hat in one of the sample pits.

Honestly, his duffas personality keeps me from being able to watch most of the shows,
even when many episodes are on some obscurely cool topic. I must have missed pegging him
on the gay thing. I just thought he was a giant dork. The Huel Hauser show would be so
much better without Huel Hauser.

Huell Howser is a character. I remember seeing him often at the Tiki-Ti in Silverlake during the 90's (I guess being next to KCET, it was convenient for him). Nothing like a lifetime of California tall tales and heavily done up rum drinks to get Huell to start telling some good stories.

It has been quite a few years since I have been in LA and seen Hewell Howser. Let's see, did he sound like this?
"Wow! You mean this thing was carved by a glacier? Wow and you guys actually climbed all the way up this cliff only using a rope. Wow."

Funny thing is, I always enjoyed all his shows. He was able to get some history usually in his shows.

I pretty much always enjoy his show when I see it. Watched them filming the falls trail show, but never saw it on the tube. I emailed the site to ask when it would show and got a corporate response, and a tiny bit later, one that seemed to be from him directly. He's okay by my book. Pegged him for a 3 first time I saw the show, big deal.
If anyone has a digital copy of the falls show or the 1/2 dome one peter mentioned, I could be eternally in your debt for sharing. I'll at least toss some wasabi your way at the clean-up.

You guys are nuts. Just because Huell is genuine he has to be gay? He is simply a very nice and real nice guy. Not everyone flaunts their testosterone chips on their shoulder. I thought his personality seemed a little soft too when I first saw his show but I'll tell you, he really motivates me to get out there with my family and see our incredibly beautiful and amazing State.
