No kidding Leggs. What a year. It turns out that shopping isn't even safe (g).

I have noticed over five decades that these tragedies tend to be roughly in groups. You can go for years and it is starting to seem that the outdoors is just the coolest playground and then matters change quickly for awhile. It is really hard to take, especially as you get older, more empathic, perhaps more tender of heart.

I appreciate the statement from his family.

His family issued a statement Wednesday saying, "Randy left this earth doing what he loved most: hiking in his most favorite mountain range in the world."

As a frequent solo back-country hiker, who likes to take reasonable risks: I can't think of a better place than the Winds, to go-----quickly.

However!

I do carry a SPOT Sat device along that may get me rescued without a big-search, if I am injured.

Also, if I have the wits to activate it when I am dying, I hope to save a lot of folks the hassle of looking for my body over a wide area.

The body of the 61-year-old Carbondale resident was found at 10,700 feet, his poles still in his hand, his sister, Dodie Udall of Boulder, said.

Randy appeared to have died from a medical condition, she said. An autopsy has been scheduled.
For whatever reason, I'm glad if it wasn't by a fall or accident.

I'm glad that he wasn't killed by a grizzly or mountain lion!

I just realized that he was married to one of my co instructors at Outward Bound. I knew Leslie was going with a Udall but I had lost track of which one.

Too young to die, and a great loss to the community, especially the Rocky Mountain West. So sorry.

Very sorry to hear this. Condolences to Brad, Mark and the entire Udall clan, the first family of the American West and tireless advocates for mountains and wilderness.

Randy was a pioneer of light and fast wilderness travel. He and Brad were the first to do the John Muir Trail in the winter, on light cross country gear. They carried no tent and slept in snow caves, taking seven days.

Too young, but he died in a spectacular place. Thoughts to his family and friends.

Condolences to the entire Udall clan. I worked with Brad's wife for 15 years, taught Mark's daughter in high school, and they are a wonderful and impressive family. Also, very experienced in the outdoors. This is very sad news.

I climbed with a Udall cousin for a while. Awesome family. So sad to hear this news - a real sucker punch to the gut.

Very, very sad. 61 is way too young to leave this place, no matter what you were doing at the time.

Like Bob Kamps, who's heart beat for the last time while climbing, this great mountaineer simply fell in his tracks.

It is a shame to inconvenience others in the search and rescue, but going with your boots on is a happy thing in my book.

While age 61 might be a bit early to go, somewhere a new mountaineer is born. Teach children to climb well and be masters of the outdoors if it is their interest. He will be amount us again soon.

What a shame! Many condolences to the family. I met Randy and Mark briefly in the 70's when they were working for Outward Bound with a friend of mine. Sounds like he definitely "walked the walk".

Thanks Rick. I did not know that.

Well, if it is your time to leave this world you can't get much better than the beautiful country. He was in the place he loved.

Heartfelt condolences to family and friends .
