Climbing all over the west I've noticed that no matter where I go there's always brilliant color schemes, and natural licheny paint jobs to entertain my eyes. Post some of your favorites.

Lichen salad...Gunks specialty!

Straight to your mouth, in the vertical lane, all you have to do is look up. The black stuff flakes off just looking at it, let alone when some newb comes up pawing around.

Great fiber, great for your heart rate, encourages a calm balanced mind...

mmmm!

Had this recited to me this very morning:

Springtime in the Rockies, Lichen
BY LEW WELCH

All these years I overlooked them in the
racket of the rest, this
symbiotic splash of plant and fungus feeding
on rock, on sun, a little moisture, air —
tiny acid-factories dissolving
salt from living rocks and
eating them.

Here they are, blooming!
Trail rock, talus and scree, all dusted with it:
rust, ivory, brilliant yellow-green, and
cliffs like murals!
Huge panels streaked and patched, quietly
with shooting-stars and lupine at the base.

Closer, with the glass, a city of cups!
Clumps of mushrooms and where do the
plants begin? Why are they doing this?
In this big sky and all around me peaks &
the melting glaciers, why am I made to
kneel and peer at Tiny?

These are the stamps of the final envelope.

How can the poisons reach them?
In such thin air, how can they care for the
loss of a million breaths?
What, possibly, could make their ground more bare?

Let it all die.

The hushed globe will wait and wait for
what is now so small and slow to
open it again.

As now, indeed, it opens it again, this
scentless velvet,
crumbler-of-the-rocks,

this Lichen!

Beautiful pictures. Lichens are pretty cool. In case anyone has been wondering, the pictures of the bright green-yellow lichens are most likely of the genus Pleopsidium, the egg-yolk yellow lichens are most likely the genus Candelariella, and the bright orange lichens are most likely from the genera Caloplaca or Xanthoria. All these genera contain multiple species that will differ from area to area.

It so happens I was able to take some photos of the Fancher Memorial on Highway 140 yesterday morning.
Getting up to these steps is a bit of a challenge for anyone but a climber. I did a hand traverse left-to-right on the south side, away from view.
It had just rained a tiny bit last night, so you can see by the tire marks. Notice the water channels on the edge?
A close-up of the riser of one of the steps.

It was completed in 1911. Fancher established a $1,000 trust in his will, the earnings of which were to be used for the care and maintenance of the monument.--LA Ties article

I have no guidebook to the place any longer,
so make up your own route and formation names,
unless someone can ID them for us.
I'm guessing Warlock is one of the cliffs.

I think we did one route on that one.

Who here has tried to use lichen for human nutrition or to make food more palatable?

On a planned 5-day backpacking trip to climb Black Kaweah, on the first night another buddy and I hung our food in a tree (not well enough) and a bear ate most of our food. I found the bear the next morning and chased him up Elizabeth Pass a bit and recovered a half pack of dry spaghetti, a bag of Reese's peanut butter chips, and a can of tomato paste with a bear tooth puncture in it. We decided to proceed.

The spaghetti with plain tomato paste was pretty rough, so I scraped some lichen off the rocks and pretended it was seasoning. Made it different, possibly better. Not inedible at least, and we didn't die. But I was about 20 years old and didn't know I could die yet.

he told me about turning it from (what woulda been) a 20 bucks/pickup buy to a three bill sale by painting blendered up milk and lichen
on it, raising up a crop o' "moss rock" kept in backyard ambient care, eventually selling it to the guy he should have bought it from
