At risk of further lowering my karma, I must share with you all the following. Somewhere between 11pm and 1am last night, I passed Justin Bieber's touring motorhome on I-5 Southbound coming into Los Angeles. His name was pasted all over the side of it, so I know it's true. And in further support of my claims, while looking for musical events here in Los Angeles, I saw that he's performing at Staples Center in Los Angeles tonight. Woo Hoo!
I dare any of you to top that.

I was on Haight street one year.
Out of a head shop walked the king, Joe Montana with a hottie (not wife) in tow.
I yelled, 'Hey Joe' he turns, I yell 'Go Cheifs!'
He told me we had great BBQ.

Went to dinner with Todd Rundgren (yeah, only you geezers will know who he is!) in Boston's North End during a MacWorld Expo years ago. At another San Francisco MacWorld, I went to a party at his house in Sausalito.
In addition to being an interesting musician, he was also involved in software development. If anyone remember Flowfazer on the Mac from ages ago, that was his product. Kind of an on-screen lava lamp. Given the crowd I worked with in those days, it all kinda made sense for him to create that.
Well, whaddaya know... it's still around!

Perhaps I should say she once met me?
I better not.
I once watched Mickey Marvin moon the Oakland PD bench at a benefit softball game, though. It was sweeeeet!
He was the essential Raiders' offensive guard to me after that.

And Ward, Largo is almost totally Hollywood.
So is Tony Bird. (Not Tony Hawk, though.)

Shared a "smoke" with Eddie Van Halen & David Lee Roth while they were setting up to play at our high school (La Canada High) for lunch in 1976. They were just starting out and did a lot of Queen covers. They played "Now I'm Here" as their final number and blew off some smoke pots which were specifically banned by the school administration. Didn't get an encore as a result.
I used to have the poster for that concert (being held at Crescenta Valley High), but I traded it for some consumables. Wish I hadn't...

Went back stage with Jimmy Buffett, at his request after my pal got sucker punched by some weirdo (we had a table on first row). Buffett said he saw it coming but couldn't stop the song and say "look out dude!". I asked him "why not?" and he laughed; but I don't think he thought it was funny.

I've seen Harrison Ford twice at a sidewalk cafe in Idaho Falls. He has a home in Jackson Hole...apparently he drives...or flies over the mountains to shop in Idaho Falls. The locals don't bother him.
Seems like a very pleasant gentleman.
Also, rode a spiral escalator in San Francisco next to Beetlejuice, the midget tough guy...nibbling on a cookie, clutching a canvas bag and wearing a "pimpology" T-shirt.
I'm kinda hazy on what he's famous for... but have to say he impressed me as a flat-out terror.
But the most grievious celebrity sighting is viewing Kardashians on covers of ALL the magazines at the local grocery check-out.

Years ago when living in NYC Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward came into the same restaurant I was in. His eyes were as drop dead blue as they always were in the movies. He was stunningly handsome and very masculine without being all muscles.

Even that's a very short list.
Chuck Walker in Santa Cruz?
Isn't that in violation of a municipal ordinance?
Edit:

As a child my ex-gf lived next door to Janis Joplin in Marin in the 60s, her parents had no clue to who Janis Joplin was. She and her sister were maybe 8 and 6 and would spend time there on occasion. She remembers going in and out via the dog door and Janis and friends playing a drinking game that involved a pool table and whiskey. I presume it was the house in Larkspur because a story about the house mentions the dog door for the St. Bernard Janis owned

For my high school newspaper I interviewed Brownsville Station and Ted Nugent, in, oh, 1973.
Back in the '80 my then gf and I saw Dave Mason at the Palamino. We sat at the bar. After his set he walked by us and my gf kicked him.
Traffic was bad one night, and we arrived late to the Hollywood Bowl. We were going in near the artist entrance, just minutes before showtime. This black Acura SUV with blacked out windows and a small LA Phil logo on the door pulled up in front of us. I told MJ, "That's the Dude!" She walked over just as Gustavo Dudamel got out, dressed in jeans and a sweater. She waved, and he stopped and waved back.
Five minutes later he was in black tie and tails conducting Mozart. This show right here, Gil Shaham was great. Maybe it was the wine, but it's still one of the beast concerts I've seen. Right up there with Zappa and Beefheart.

Several years ago I read this story about Dustin Hoffman & his wife, and how a woman just outside their Malibu 'bungalow' had an anaphylactic reaction to a beesting, and that Dustin's wife had used her own Epi-Pen to treat her (successfully).
I was always somewhat skeptical about that story, and wondered what really happened. One morning I was at a Starbucks near Malibu, and in walks Dustin Hoffman. Asked if the story was true: Yes; and what happened afterward: never heard from the woman again.
That guy is really short.

I was in "Cisco's" in Long Beach getting lunch. Cisco's was a hamburger joint that Jesse James of Monster Garage fame had for his employees next to his shop. The place was really, really good, all fresh and organic ingredients.
Anyway, I see him coming down the sidewalk with an incredibly beautiful woman on his arm. I mean she was drop dead gorgeous with sunglasses and a scarf on. It took a minute to register even though I knew they were married. It was Sandra Bullock.
They came in and ordered and the vibe of the place totally changed. Everyone was trying to be cool, myself included.
I wanted to say something but I was paralyzed. I never expected something like that to have that effect on me .
I must repeat one thing. She was unbelievably beautiful in real life, they must have had to tone it down for the movies.
edit: Oh yeah, her breasts were way bigger in real life too!

Maybe my definition of "celebrity" is aiming too low, but I've never been more star-struck than I was in college when Royal Robbins showed up at Indian Rock a couple of times, and actually condescended to boulder with my friends and me.
One of my roommates was an extra in the Robert Redford film "The Candidate," in a scene filmed in Berkeley at the same time, and he was pretty excited to see and say hello to Redford, but I thought I had the much more exciting encounter.

I had coffee with Stephen King every morning for a week. I punched the clock at the time at Flatiron Athletic Club in Boulder and one day, in walks the Man. No one at the front desk had any idea who he was but me. The first think he said was, “I would like to join for a week” and the front desk girls response was, “Would you like a tour or should I just take your money”. After working out he would always sit at the counter reading a novel and wait for his wife Tabby and and daughter Niomie. I finally approached him and asked if I could buy him a cup of coffee. He declined but an easy conversation began and every morning afterwards he acknowledged me and I set a cup of coffee in front of him and usually just gave him his space. My favorite quote from him was, “I started working out five years ago and I believe people would actually pay for the benefits if they did not have to actually do the work. For me It is the only time of the day that’s mine, so I cherish it” He was trying to tell me something I am sure. By the way, he still wore his high school letterman jacket, wore blue jeans and needed a new pair of shoes.
Called out to do warranty work for what I was told was a “sensitive” residential by the name of Bill Johnson in Woody Creek outside of Aspen. When I arrived I was taken down stairs and left alone to do my work on the brand new fitness equipment just installed the week before. I heard footsteps coming down the stairs behind me and I turned around and was face to face with Al Pacino. Supper cool. barefoot, wearing shorts and looking old. He casually quizzed me about what the problems with the equipment and then down the same stairs comes Tony Hawk. Right away Tony starts saying, “ What’s wrong with this stuff?” Al kept saying I don’t care, it’s her thing, not mine. Tony told him he should just return it and not mess around. Al seemed a little irritated with Tony and they both just left.

Now, I don't like the band, but I taught Joe Perry's kid how to ski. Joe was a really nice guy, gave me a good tip.
I've run into Glen Plake multiple times all around the country. He's a class act. Helped me find my lost dog.
I've seen movie celebrities around from time to time, but I'm not the starstruck type.

I grew up in Fontana, and everyone there then has at least one Sammy Hagar story.
I have more than some, because one of my pals, Jimmy, is Hagar's nephew. ( Sammy's sister, Bobbie, is Jimmy's mom )
One night we were gathered at Jimmy's house. Sammy was there for a TV party. Sammy had just left Montrose, and was on TV ( Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, or something similar ) with the new band he was headlining. Bill Church ( bassist ) was there too.
After watching them on TV, us kids decided to showcase our musical abilities too. So we sang some primary school protest songs ( "glory glory halalughiea, teacher hit me with a ruler", etc )
After we were finished, Sammy said we were hired if we wanted a spot in his band. Of course, he was joking.

Come to Against the Stream Sangha in Santa Monica any morning at 7 for meditation. You'll see scads of stars and big shots - making the coffee, putting out the cushions/zaffffffus, sweeping up afterwards. Then we all - regular folk and luminaries - go and live our lives, muddling along . . .
One of the exercises for those having a problem with there being "stars" is to make them go fetch their autographs. That's a pride buster every time, and pride, as they say, is the turd in the punchbowl.

I was tooling down PCH on my brand new 1974 RD250 when a cager made a left in front of me almost hitting me.
I pulled in behind him at the gas station he'd turned into and he got out and kind of weaved over to me.
He was shaking and really nervous. He tells me he didn't see me and was really sorry. He tried to light a cig and was shaking so badly I took the matches and lit it for him.
Then I realized it was Gary Burgoff . "Dude!! you're Radar!!" I say.
I told him not to worry. It happens all the time and that I generally expect it.
He calmed down a little and stumbled back to his car.

I accidentally had lunch with jazz piano master Marian McPartland around 1975 or so; the diner was crowded and we had to share a table about the size of a silver dollar. It was pretty neat. She was in SLC for a week as the artist in residence at the summer jazz institute at the University, and I'd snuck in to a long improv session the day before where she riffed for a wandering 20 minutes on "Mr. Bojangles," of all things, and brought it home for a stupendous finish. I was awestruck, and so the next day, having lunch with the Master, I was starstruck. To the point that my nose started running copiously with admiration. Didn't want to snort or blow loudly, with Marian McPartland genteely eating her salad about six inches away. Very stressful, trying to inhale discreetly to lift the snot back up into my skull, etc. But she was totally nice to me, even though I couldn't figure out what to say in between snot lift gasps. Wonderful piano-playing. I was smarter and more refined for weeks afterward.

I was hitching from Lake Placid to the Gunks to climb in mid-70s. At the Albany tollbooth for the Thruway, along with my pack and rope, I am holding a big sign that says New Paltz. It is dark out but there is always traffic there. A big gold Lincoln pulls up, I briefly note the New York plates with "FP-1" as the identification. The door opens and it is Floyd Patterson, his wife, and kids coming back from Vermont.
Floyd says "I saw the rope and figured you are going down to climb along the Carriage Roads."
I said that "yes" I was and he said he lived nearby and described how, when he was boxing, he liked to do his road work on the Carriage Roads and that he liked seeing the climbers. I chatted with him and his wife and in no time I was dropped off at the old Grand Union in New Paltz. I thanked them and he put out his hand for a shake, that hand had seen some action.
He struck me as a good man. I later heard of his work with the boxing commission with poor kids and what an amazing ambassador of his sport he was. While several of my New Paltz friends said running into Floyd was pretty common, it was for me an amazing experience.
Several years later I met Ingemar Johansson, one of Floyd's rivals for the heavyweight crown when he came to Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont where I was teaching XC skiing. He wanted to race in the Sweden's Vasaloppet, a 90 K hurt dance across central Sweden. He was 20 years past his prime but still a national hero. His handlers decided to take him to rural America and whip him into shape away from the temptations of the fast life. Judging from the training he was doing, I can't imagine old Ingemar fared too well in the race but he was not going to starve with with girth he carried.
Two very different men linked in history and mainly remembered through black and white photographs

I turn and said yes but I would not buy them when swabby pants were two bucks at the army surplus store. The guy said something and stomped off.
A friend walk up and said what did Chouinard have to say?
My reply after I realized who I had just unintelligently snubbed was not a thing.
My rack was 98% Chounaird was what I wanted to tell him.

Worked in LA for years as a chimney sweep. It became a bore to work for Hollywood stars. I hated it. Spielberg's place was a pain in the ass it work in. It would be funny to show up and the "help" would show us in. They didn't want you to know "who" owned the house. One look at the pictures would tell. Then once as I was checking out a fireplace, some guy came up behind me and ask so why doesn't it work? As I turned around Brad Pitt was standing there. Dick Martin was really cool to my young son on a visit to clean his chimney at his beach front home in Malibu. My favorite was while installing a woodstove for Lindsey Wagner she cooked me breakfast. Shit! The Bionic Woman made me breakfast!

We were at a play at the Mark Taper Forum starring Richard Schiff of "The West Wing."
That's your first clue. Our seats were right on the aisle so at intermission
we bolted up to the mezzanine, as was our wont. The wife, of course,
beelined to the pissatorium while I took up my usual position holding up
the wall while I perused the playbill.
Old habits die hard so while I'm reading I'm maintaining a modicum of situational
awareness. I'm still about the only person out there when I see somebody
exit the same house doors which we came through and head in my general direction.
This is odd as I'm not near anything and I'm 25' away. Just as he is about
to plow into me like I'm a blocking sled he hangs a 90 and comes within inches
of dislodging my boutonnière. It was only then that I focused on him, always
good form before laying into someone, and it is Martin Sheen. Dude had a
crazed look in his eye that left no doubt that he was still on the trail of Colonel Kurz.
I hope the poor bastard eventually finds him and exorcizes himself.

Also seen many other folks but never spoke to them so it doesn't count. I did get back stage to a U2 concert but even though I got real close... I actually saw the band joining the group. I had to leave to catch my ride. Yes, I also left to runaway... Childhood fixations should be left alone. It's nice to remember what you thought in your head before shattering it with reality. Several years ago Leigh Keno of Antiques Roadshow fame was hired to be the auctioneer for the New Hampshire Furniture Masters annual auction. I had made an ovolo cornered sideboard in the Federal style, his specialty.
Prior to the auction he was inspecting the pieces, and kept glancing ahead at my sideboard. When he finally arrived he ran his hand over the veneers, inspected the dovetailing on the drawers, and then dropped to his knees to check out the underside and back. I was busy schmoozing a perspective buyer (US Senator Judd Gregg and his wife) as Keno stood up, smoothed out his pants, and shot me a nod of approval. Later that evening he yelled, " Sold, to the Senator from New Hampshire!"
We chatted at length following the auction, but the previous nod had spoke volumes.

This happened years ago and I just remembered it the other day. Dr. Ed might appreciate this. In 7th or 8th grade some guy gave a "lecture" on lasers. It was Nobel prize winner Arthur Schawlow. One of the most interesting lectures I have ever attended. A couple years later, my father obtained a laser tube from an engineer friend and he built a power supply for it and mounted it in a cool metal box. It was the size of a toaster and was the source of endless fun and mischief all through my teens.

I wonder if it's hardest to be an always recognized semi-famous actor with zero name recognition. You assume you can move among the masses, but there's probably more staring, whispers, and pointing as people are trying to figure it out. So weird. Must be so hard to remain "normal."

I have guided Julie Louis Dreyfus, Brad Hall, Mel Gibson, two guys that write a famous TV show Whose names I can't remember or which show...But it was one of the ones people were crazy about in the early 2000s. The photographer Peter Lik (yes that is his name).Played guitars, hiked and ran around with Nikki Bluhm and Dave Mulligan. Grew up climbing with artist Jeremy Collins and I used to race Maurice Green in track. No big deal though...To top it off I know Werner Braun.
I forgot! I lifted weights with Paul Pierce a handful of time too.

BITD, as a lawyer, I represented people who thought they were Jesus Christ (or were otherwise God's gift to humanity). Does that count?
