Pioneer climber in the Gunks, Tetons and Alaska. The McCarthy Wall in the Gunks speaks volumes as does the Lotus Flower Tower and the first ascent of the Grand Traverse in the Tetons.
Jim also served a term as president of the American Alpine Club where he continues to be active.
If you're at the Kor Memorial in Golden on Sunday you csn congratulate him in person.

Happy birthday "Mac" and many more to come. Probably because he was based in the east and not Yosemite or Colorado, and managed to balance a successful professional career with his climbing---a true weekend warrior of the first rank, Jim's major contributions to climbing over many decades have never received the true recognition that they deserve. Thanks for posting this, Jim D.

Jim McCarthy was larger-than-life in the Gunks lore of the late 60s when my own climbing life began. The couple times I met him and talked to him he was friendly. He was one of the many things that made climbing so great. Good to hear where he is at birthday-wise. Best wishes.

A true badass -- try some of his routes at the Gunks with modern gear and then think back to when he was putting them up! Mad respect!

Way to go, old guy! Many happy returns. As I pointed out at the AAC you were tremendously influential in getting bouldering recognized as legitimate. And that cover of Sports Illustrated was well deserved. Hope you are doing well!

Perhaps a good moment to recycle an old story. Check out some of the pictures of Jim BITD.

You guys inspire me every day. As someone who didn't pick up the sport until his mid 20's and now been at it for 20 years it gives me hope that I will be at it for another 40. My grandfather was a tough ass farmer that worked well into his 80's, and I plan to farm routes until at least the. Happy belated birthday, I love the routes you put up at the tower.

I'm real glad I saw this thread.

Thanks for all the good that you have done for the sport.

It is a sport, right, or you wouldn't have been on that vintage cover.

And happy belations to you, as well.

Or cache the greeting this year for next year, then I can be first...

The welcoming atmosphere at the Gunks, so enjoyed by us later folk, was set by yourself, Dan Smiley, Hans, and Fritz.

Hard to say anything more meaningful than

Thank you!

I remember when I first met Jim in Boulder in the early 1960s, and
when he climbed a little in Eldorado. I always thought of him as
"the man," or one of them.... We have remained friends all through
the years. He was of great help to me when I worked on the history
of free climbing and drove to my house which, then for a short while,
was in Idaho. We sat for hours and talked climbing. He has an
impeccable memory.
