Last fall I shared a bit my small business venture with Gstrings Climbing Grips (http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1944841/Gstrings). Things have gone well since then and we're still at it.

My son who is a climber and videographer owed me some money (what else is new?! :-) so in exchange for canceling his debt, he offered to make several short videos (training, how-to adjust, and a intro/promo). Recently I spent a week in Missoula with him shooting a lot of raw footage for use in crafting the final clips.

For the ~30 second intro I really gave him free license to be creative because I really didn't have any specific ideas. Well it turned out that after I left, he actually did 'some additional filming' and I was a bit surprised what he came up with. I guess I shouldn't have been, since it's probably fairly natural given the double entendre of the name. At first I was a bit skeptical because of the 'skin'. However I ran it by a number of women who are quite outspoken and who I thought would be critical. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they actually liked it, or at least weren't turned off enough to say so.

However, I'm still a bit concerned about what people might think (witness the boob thread!) - especially parents whose kid might end up on our website and the video clip auto-plays. Relatively, though it's pretty mild and done in an artsy way.

I know the 'taco consists of all kinds who aren't afraid to speak their minds, so wanted to get some input regarding how to use it. The options as I see them are:

a) on opening screen in auto-play mode, no controls to stop, only a link to by-pass and proceed to main website (now implemented here)
b) on opening screen, it auto-plays but with normal youtube video controls so it can be stopped, also with the same link to main website.
b) on opening screen, but doesn't auto-play. Totally under user's control. User has to click to play or click to proceed and bypass
c) don't include it on the opening screen but just have a link to it somewhere on the homepage or somewhere in the website (kind of a waste since it would probably not be played once someone is already into the website.
d) forget about putting on website and just leave it on YouTube.

The music was perfect for just hangin' around.

I hang around here in my shorts.

Locker is being facetious as usual, butt given his face...

And G-strings are worn lower down than the shoulder blades, last I knew.

The black and white is effective and matches the older music.

If I had a left thumb, BTW, I'd be all over this, hangin' around in my shorts. But I don't want to get at all lopsided. I'm unbalanced enough.

And I'm too lazy to hang 'em up in the first place.

Far niente.

edit: Final analysis, get a grip on your worries. A nun would laff nowadays at what is permitted. And a second look shows a butt, not shoulder blades.

Actually glad you are soliciting opinions here...which will be varied as you suspected.

I'm pretty conservative about skin marketing, etc. However, YOU named YOUR product "G-String". Too late now to back down - go with it.

My honest opinion is that the short I just watched was very tastefully done. Nothing seemed offensive to me. It fits the product's name and the black/white footage along with the mellow music choice simmered down the hotness of that ass (which is a nice one by the way).

If I was running the show over there and had the G-string name and that short, then I would shoot some stills with the product somewhat blocking the ass view, butttttt still have it in the background blurred.

In summary, your son did you a favor by putting this together; it's hip, tasteful and fits your product's name.

PS I am buying a set tomorrow!

First I read the replies. With great trepidation I clicked. Imagine my
surprise, no, make that delight. I might have lit the opening shot differently
but there is no prurient setting on my studio lights. :-)

Compared to yer average billboard in Europe you are a prude, sir!

Most excellent overall and I thought the music absolutely fabulous!

Sex sells baby!

The only ones that will tell you differently were raised in a zealous time when using the body instead of the mind for selling anything was considered a degradement of that sex, however what they fail to see is the empowerment of that sex and how it can raise the bar for all involved.

Nevermind it has been going on for thousands of years and is not something they can control, ever.

The naysayers are confused, probably have no sex life and should be ignored.

It's not the view of a woman's rear that is offensive to some, but the *suggestion* that a woman's purpose is limited to her usefulness as a sexual object.

NOT that I object to the video. My tagline for ClimbAddict Chalkbags was originally "They're not looking at your a$$ - It's your chalkbag! Of course, I never did a photo shoot of cute butts walking down the trails with a swinging sashay of the chalkbags....though I probably would have if I'd had the budget.

But - If I named my product G-Strings, I'd run it and more. I'd have contests asking people to post themselves doing climbing workouts in a G-tring. I'd make a video of oldschool dudes being shown these new workout tools, skoffing at the idea that the youngsters can't just get out and climb....being cajoled into trying them out....showing the dudes gripping, and then panning down to well-honed shoulders and arms and lower backs and what....looks like - NO! They're NOT going to show an old dude's butt in a thong??? NO!!!... and then just before that, a fade to black from the image with a fade in of the G-String product/logo with some snappy tagline that ties is the idea of using imagination(as the grips can be used in many ways imaginable).

On the other hand, I would never have named my product a term that had sexual connotations. I find it sort of declasse. But that's just me - it works for plenty of others.

But it seems to me that the OP has reached the point in the road where he has to decide how to proceed. Is he going to work the angle that seemed a good idea at the start but walks the line of exploitation? GoDaddy does it - uses the play on words with "hot spokeswomen" to market the service. They seem to get a lot of attention. Both positive and negative....

Or is he going to avoid the conflict?

Or - is he going to use the video as a short-term exposure tool...umm, like is happening in this thread? Well - he picked the right audience for that!

As a parent of several kids who climb, and one kid who incessantly searches climbing stuff online, i would have absolutely no issues if he stumbled on this stuff.

By the way, the product looks rad!

My $0.02, but i don't get too worked up over dumb stuff anyway. Plus, some of the Prana line of women's clothing is super racy...

Any parents who are uptight enough to freak out about that add will most likely have kids who will run out and buy the product in spite of them. The rest of the kids will buy it because it is cool.

Cool product. I would like to see more about how they are adjusted... and more g-strings too.

It's not the view of a woman's rear that is offensive to some, but the *suggestion* that a woman's purpose is limited to her usefulness as a sexual object.

Clearly, the best solution then is to have the woman in the g-string doing the workout.

Creative ideas Happie! Wish I had the budget for a marketing/art director! :-) I'll have to pass them on to my son for the next time he's in debt to me! ;-)

The intention from the outset was not to use 'sex-to-sell' They were given the working name Gstring during development because it was descriptive of their shape. I was going to change it to 6-grips since there are 6-7 major positions. However, when friends and testers heard that they said I'd be a fool for not going with the Gstring name . It's definitely more memorable both because of the description of the shape as well as the double entendre. Sooo...at this point there 's no thought of turning back and we have embraced the name and will creatively make use of it...within reason.

'Your wish is my command!' Actually we just put these up and haven't posted links anywhere yet. I wasn't really planning on putting them here but...

They're not comprehensive but hopefully they'll give people an idea of how to adjust and use them, though all that's documented on the website if one has the time to wade through it. While I was in Missoula we had the cooperation of a couple of my son's climbing friends (Thanks Brandon and Molly!) and the hands of my son's fiance (thanks Hannah!). They're all better looking than both he and I and they climb pretty damn hard too (son is rock'n a mullet again and looks ugly as sin!)

How to adjust

Yep, we've already done some of that and have a list of more gyms as we get time, extra sets, etc. We have one requirement that they put up an advertising poster somewhere prominent. Most seem happy to do that.

One interesting phenomena, is we now have a distributor in Korea (also France - man those Euros are crazy on training!) who mainly markets them to the arm wrestling/marital arts crowd and is trying to break into the sport climbing market over there. I don't encourage wholesaling because the high production cost cuts down my profit and their profit margin unless they charge through-the-roof prices. With limited production capabilities, priority is always given to the individual customers. I like the personal contact and satisfaction of dealing with people, not companies. I'm sure you've experienced that.

Thank you all for you input. Interesting discussions as always. It pretty much confirmed what I felt but wanted to make sure I wasn't off base. The "less is more" video is now incorporated into the website as the intro (home page) with the ability to click on video to pause/stop it and/or click on "website" to skip directly it.

Lastly, I thought you might find it interesting to see what they do with Gstrings in Korea. This was from a competition sponsored by SILVIS.com. Not exactly what I had in mind when I designed them but I guess it's reflective of the versatility of the grips. This is all done "bareback" (StickGrip taken off, bare untextured aluminum)!

Ordered a pair last Thursday and they arrived on Monday. Just had a chance to play around with them last night...very nice. Seriously, they are pretty much a work of art with superb craftmanship that is so cool.

The versatality of the adjustment system is mind boggling. So many positions can be done to allow for all types of holds.

More simply said; these are stunning in appearance and also in design.

Get some!
