The Madison and Minneapolis premieres were a raging success this past month. 450+ people came to the Madison premiere alone, along with a number of DLFA guys (and one DLFA gal). Huge thanks to everyone who made the film and the premieres a success.

Darin's site is up and running for downloading the film. Check it out here: http://DLFAfilm.com and get yourself a copy!

Got the film a while back and thought it was great! It is especially good if you know some of the guys in the film. Nice history and even some climbing footage!

But... How do you actually get a tshirt that does not cost $35? I'm all over some shirts, but just don't have that kinda jackness for some new threads. I checked the site (DLFAfilm.com) with no success.

Please advise.

I "Looked" and then clicked the "blog" page.

On Top at beginning it starts "Oxford man dies in fall ..."

lol

I can just see, n00b or non climber goes there and "thinks" these climber types are crazy ......

Just bought the download. Can't wait! Devil's Lake is really a unique place to climb.

Edit: So...it's been a couple of hours, and I still haven't received the link for the download. Lil' help!

Russ- click on "purchase film here" and then when the shopify link comes up click the left option.

I'll also ask Darin to make sure that's the way, I didn't buy mine that way.

For reasons only old Bill can explain, I am sorry to say Swilliam turned down the opportunity to be interviewed for this film. It's too bad because his input as one of the first "self proclaimed" presidents of the DLFA for LIFE would have certainly added much insight to our somewhat twisted club. Old Bill was one fine prez and example of walking the fine line of fuk-nes! Peace and fuk-nes. Steve Sangdahl

steve s- The film makers didn't slap him around enough to get him in line.

How could Mr. Midwest avoid the limelight here?!?

Perhaps Mimi and I could work some magic if the producers are still willing to add content. I'll have to oil up the thumbscrews for the occasion.

Steve G. The word on the street is Mr. Midwest would not do an interview for the film out of "principle" . As one friend put it "you know he really wanted to ......but out of principle , no".
I don,t want to speak for Bill as he is a good friend and I have the utmost respect for him, I believe he wouldn't,t do it because he still feels strongly that when he left Devil,s lake the DLFA was done. That couldn't,t be farther from the truth but we did lose a damn fine clubber. Most of us left within a few years of old Bill anyway. Peace and fuk-nes steve s. Now Puke!

A few people have been emailing me asking Q's about the downloads and stuff, which is cool, but I'm not Darin. I just helped out with logistics and the premiere showing. If you emailed me, I forwarded your email on to Darin. He also is going to respond to this thread but has been climbing a ton in jtree and didn't have computer access until the last day or so (living in your van has some advatages and some drawbacks). Patience! Thanks for the interest. chris eggert

This is Rudy Rudotis (Jim Rudolph) - any promotion of the DLFA and climbing hard is always appreciated. That said, it really was the early crew of Tom Deuchler, Bill Russell, Rob Lemon, and others who gave the club it's "color". It saddens me deeply to hear of all the hard times some have had since those early years. Many I cannot confirM such as the passing of Rob Lemon. I also had heard Tommy Deuchler was in failing health. I was lucky enough to attend the 50th bday party for Rich Bechler before his passing. He did truly pioneer many very hard lead routes as did Tommy and Pete Cleveland. If anyone has any updates or contact info for the early years DLFA members please pass them along as I would love to catch up jrudolph@doall.com Finally, the new members should remember to be true to tradition and put style above all else..

Rob Lemon's died?

Only knew him briefly, sad to hear if that's true. "Colorful" does not begin to describe Rob and his antics.

This is a great movie on many levels. I love the interviews and the photography, but what makes this movie special, in my opinion, is the MUSIC!

The introduction is rather dry and documentary-like....then the VW Van is rolling to an exciting soundtrack that reminds me a bit of the Batman theme.

Sorry to learn some folks are having download troubles, but just consider it a minor inconvenience. Your patience will be greatly rewarded.

Crunch...I.e.Crusher, As far as I know Rob lemon is still alive and living in Merced ....just like the last time. I asked chez about him just a few months ago and he was sure he was still okay but crazy as usual. Apparently he would go to Yosemite and bug Bill Russell for cigarettes and beer. ....just like the last time.
Rudy , Pete C. Is still at the same house out side DL and gets out climbing occasionally . Tommy has become reclusive ,possible because of health issues. Most of the old club moved west. Glad to hear you made it I.e. You are still alive. Peace and fuk-nes Steve Sangdahl

Well, not being such a tightwad as Russ, I decided to invest a large sum of money into a DLFA T shirt.

Link's jacked:

I was, understandably, distraught.

The buy movie link's pushing up the daisies, too:

Damn. What's a guy gonna do? I never have this problem buying movies on that onlydudes site.

Labor Day 1978. I have just come to Wisconsin to go to grad school at UW-Madison. It's my first trip to Devil's Lake and I am walking around with my shoes and harness looking to see if I can bum some roped climbing.

I encounter a large group of scruffy types below Sometimes Crack. Somebody offers to belay me and up I go on my first ever climb at the Lake. I notice that all the chatting has stopped and everybody is watching me climb.

I get up to a particularly difficult move (I learned later that the normal route actually goes right at that point) and can't figure out how to go straight up. Finally, I look over my shoulder and shout down to the crowd, "you are probably not going to like this move" and launch a dyno for a hold. I stick it and finish the climb to the applause of all of those below. They all yell up "that's the way we do it!"

Back at the bottom I learn that this is the core group of the DLFA. I was busy enough in grad school that I didn't do a lot of climbing with the DLFA, but they did introduce me to some great buildering on the UW-Madison campus. There always seemed to be an empty wine bottle near the base of the better routes:-)

At long last the DLFA documentary film is back online for download for $7, here:

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/24156

This website should be a lot easier and more reliable for the download. A lot of blood, sweat, and work went into this film, including an all original soundtrack recorded at Sweatbox Studios. Enjoy!
