I'm here in Bend with two Tucson climbers who were just stunned when they heard this news. Both agree that Steve was the nicest person you could ever meet.
So sorry for the loss to his family and all his friends.

A huge loss... It's hard not to think of his family... and their hearts.
It was nice to visit the Pickle and share with him my memories of Steve, memories my son was too young to remember...

hey there say, leggs...
this is very sad, really awful, i am so very sorry to hear this...
when i lived in south texas, there were many times we read of deaths
from the bee stings, of killer-bees...
men that been mowing the lawn, a few were...
all were occuring where folks had done yard work, or
cleaned out old sheds, etc... :(
my condolences to this family and loved ones,
i am very sorry to hear he did not make it home to them, :(

Exploring for new routes in southern Arizona a couple years ago we kept running into these at one crag.
They seemed to be attracted to bright colors, and red in particular.
Warning seemed to be a bee would hover near your neck (and ears) with a low key, small but sort of industrial buzz. A bit higher pitched than other bees and flies.
I think the neck area is warmer, or they are attracted to the sweat, or something.
One bee was okay. Best to keep still, let it fly away. Being approached by several at once, or if they began landing on your neck, walking around, was a signal to quietly leave, ASAP. Main thing was to never try to bat at them, annoy them. Once they land it's very easy to accidentally antagonize them. Never did get stung.
Being on the ground felt okay, because a person can outrun them, get away. But tied in, up on a climb, was kind spooky.

If that helps you sleep at night, that's cool, but I wouldn't necessarily take that belief to the bank, especially in rocky, cactus-filled, desert terrain where you're not going to be picking 'em up and putting 'em down as fast as you would on the flats (and none of us old fu*kers are exactly Usain Bolt in the first place).

I once tied my dog up while bouldering. After the first problem I came down and he was freaking out. Apparently we disturbed the nearby bees. I rushed in and untied him. No idea how many stings he got, but I had 5.
Sad, sad loss.

oh my, hope this does not go twice, I think this did not post, so i am redoing it:
i just found myself crying about this, when i drove home from the store, earlier... after reading the stories from south texas, many years agoa, i just keep thinking about your dear friend, and him enjoying the day with his dog, until then...
sorry to remind you again, but i just wanted to add that i will not forget to pray for his family... :(

I met Steven in 89 at the base of Short Circuit. Don Snyder and I were finishing off a day of crack climbing and I was in the habit of leading SC at the time. Steven and a couple of others walk up and he asked if he could give it a go. I belayed him up and he climbed it first time. Not sure if I had seen anyone on-sight the the thing before. Really nice guy.

hey there say, just an added note, as to the 'killer bees'...
NOISE of the lawn mowers would set them off, if they were nearby, :(
and, sadly, those involved could not outrun them, once they hit, :(
if you live in those areas and have 'clean up time' as to
old shed, trees/brush to chop down, etc,
those were areas where folks had trigger them, (their hives were hidden
in such areas) and lead to sad deaths of folks just trying
to be good care-takers with their land, :(
hope this helps others in texas, arizona, new mexico and southern areas of california, etc, or wherever they are spreading to...
once again, prayers for his family... :(

hey there say, did anyone ever have any pictures of steven johnson...
it seems kind of sad, no photos... :(
he was such a well loved man...
perhaps, lisa, could you find a few, or some of his buddies, here, could
add some... just so supertopo can remember him, in a nice way...
and for the younger, new crowd, as well:
it was said he was working on a route? so his intention was
to help other climbers, it seemed?
once again, prayers for his family and i hope there is friends of his, that stay in touch with the family, even after... families do need this, i think...
