Lester = looking good
Buchholtz = looking good
Dempster = meh
Lackey = who knows
Dubront = horse in training

Bullpen = oh ya baby!

it will be interesting to see how Middlebrooks does when Big Papi makes it back from the DL, but the offense seems to be cooking...

As an avid Red Sox fan, I was disgusted last year with the hiring of Valentine and watched nary a game. My wife and I were super excited with Farrell's hiring, and the team looks great, full of young talent and a solid bullpen.

In 2008, the summer after the Sox beat the Rockies in the WS, I walked into a bar in Steamboat Springs for lunch wearing my Mike Lowell shirt. The barkeep spots this from across the room and bellows, "Hey! We don't serve your kind here! You guys broke our heart." Still got a nice table outside and a good chucke out of it.

Damn, I'd still go to baseball if we had deals like that on the east coast. I love going to conferences in cities like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati - a working man can afford a ballgame, the stadiums are nice, and the folks are super friendly.

There are ways to get into Fenway cheap. Did it last year. You just need to bring a book and be prepared to wait. SRO is cheap, SRO on the Monster is good too. We got great seats behind the Red Sox dugout just above the boxes for 30 bucks. They open the day o' the game ticket sales around 4pm. They do not just sell $2 bleachers but some of everything. You just have to ask and be ready to wait. Waiting on Lansdowne St is pretty entertaining by itself. The biggest disappoinment about modern Fenway is that you can no longer go in early to see Red Sox batting practice.

I was able to hit Fenway cheap a few years ago, but I had really unique conditions. I was working in Cambridge, so I'd bike to the stadium and lowball the scalpers for less than face value. By the 2nd inning they'd always bite. I had all the leverage: I was solo (no kid who wanted in), didn't go out of my way to get there, didn't invest in parking, and if they didn't take my offer I could just watch the game across the street at the brewhouse.

IMO this stretch of shitty baseball the giants are playing doesnt really matter. It will matter when Aug/Sept comes where they are at. As long as they make the playoffs I can see them going to WS again. And if they don't....well you can't keep on winning forever. 2 WS wins in 3 years is VERY GOOD. And they didn't make it to playoffs after they won their 1st.

I think releasing Melky Cabrera was dumb. They would have an awesome batter for not that much $ after his steroid scandal. He didn't handle himself well, but anyway, from business point he would be great to have. However Giants pitchers are struggling now, not as much batters...

Go Giants!

As bad as interleague play was when it was confined to two weeks, its really bad now. All over the map and off and on all season. Guess what this does to the lineups and rotations, AFU that's what. I predict the entire MLB, the NL, will go to the DH!

I like the idea of the A's, to win a championship on a small payroll... but it hasn't happened yet, not that it can't... power to Billy Beane

but I'm a Red Sox fan, infected at birth... and long suffering until the 21st century... no matter where I lived.

I see it more as a disease than as a conversion...

After being raised a National League guy, I've come around to enjoying the DH.

I've decided that it's just not interesting to watch the #8 guy get walked with a man in scoring position and two outs so they can K the pitcher.

And yeah, the double switch. Whoop-di-doo. Where's the "strategy" if the managers do the same thing, every time? You can do a lot more with the bottom of the order in the American League without the black hole in the 9 spot. I find it less predictable with the DH.

Good guys took 3 of 4 from the Giants this week.

But I only like the interleague stuff when it's the "natural rivalries."

I'd rather have my A's play more games against the AL teams than have to suffer through games against the Padres or Brewers. Nothing against either team, I'd just rather play the AL teams more often. Like it used to be.

^^^but that roof is cool (saw my first Mariners game in April...they beat Justin V).

At home, here in Boston, the Sox are interesting (and having fun) again this year, and Buchholz has been stellar.

In the NL, how about Troy Tulowitzki?? He's always been scratching at the surface of superstar and after missing much of last year is having an outstanding start at the plate and in the field = .337 avg, .400+ OBP, and .600+ slugging with 12 hr and 43 rbi... and .996 fielding with 78 putouts and one of the top range factors in the league.

Bummed my Braves lost their 6'5", 5-tool lead off man to injury for 4-6 weeks. Hopefully Heyward can come back and pick up where he left off (hitting .350 since the break). The Dodgers have awesome pitching, and could be unstoppable. As for the American League, meh, who cares? Todd G: My God! heaven for a baseball fan (imagine a view like that next to El Cap for a climber).

Great photo Ed - I was listening to that A's and Mariners game on the radio when your photo was taken. The A's bullpen, one of the best in the majors this year, had a meltdown and the M's had a 5 run 8th (2 of the 5 runs scored on wild pitches) to come from behind for the 7-4 win. One of the few happy moments this season for a long suffering Mariners fan (talk about love unrequited!).

DanaB - I´m a huge fan of Roger Angell's baseball writing. First hooked by my folks who would send me all his New Yorker pieces when I first moved down to Costa Rica and was in a total baseball blackout (before the days of the inter-nets). I've picked up a few of his books since then (Game Time, Season Ticket, and A Pitchers Story: Innings with David Cone) and still go back to them at least once during every off sesason.

After yet another lackluster season, I'm left with one pitiful hope - that the Mariners can make it to .500. Not bloody likely, as they'll need to go 22-14 the rest of the way, but hey, hope springs eternal.

Really you guys what the hell is fun about rooting for the Yankees or Red Sox (or dodgers, rangers, Angels, Giants, for that matter)? they spend 3 times what the A's do, not to mention the royals, and then just spend more if a part falls off-like the aged jeter. Schadenfreude is potent-watching the Royals go up on the yankees in the wild card race as of today, yumm. I'll feel better about the Yankees when they start developing their own players again. For now, they are boring. Again, the only fun watching them is seeing them fail.

too bad the As are out of it. I always go for the team from our division first (that would be the AL west), then if they don't make it, I'll root for whoever has the most ex-Mariners on their roster. After listening to a fair number of Red Sox games this year, I'd say they're going to take it all. But the Cards are sneaky and they're looking pretty good here in the playoffs, a lot like in 2011. First was Nick 'What could possibly happen' Punto being picked off second.
Then Miguel 'I'm a burner in my own mind' Cabrera running through the

And now Xander 'I think I'll watch the JumboTron' Bogaerts snoozing into third.

What I like about post season sports and championship games.

Everything is on the table. Playing to win. Starters that pitch relief.

History possible with every at bat.

As world series go I am really enjoying this one. Dont care about either team particularly. But both teams are excellent at the key aspects of the game and it is very evenly matched. Good baseball happens like this.

Reilly, I have an American League bias being a lifelong BoSox fan, but the AL pitchers are used to pitching to eight players plus a professional hitter (DH) vs an almost automatic out (pitcher). Lester is a beast right now, and has previous WS experience from 2007 after returning from cancer. Lackey is also at his stride right now and always pitches well at Fenway.

As poorly as the team has been hitting as a whole, they were the top scoring offense in the Majors and are finding ways to get the timely hit.

Should the Sox hang on to win, Papi is a shoe-in for MVP. The only other possibility would be if Lester returned for another lights out performance in Game 7.

Very happy to see the Sox win. Has any other team gone from last place to win the Series next season? My favorite part of the game (well, other than the end result) was Ellsbury getting out of the run down between 1st and 2nd, escaping 4 or was it 5 Cardinals in the process---don't see that too often.

Despite that, I will not be fighting the traffic to watch the parade. Sunny and 60s---I'll be at the crag!!!!

The Twins did it (90s?), but still impressive. Farrell should be a shoe-in for AL manager of the year. He changed the whole culture of the team and made them Believe. For that matter, Cherrington deserves GM of the year for assembling that band of bearded misfits.
