Whatever mark this strong team sets in the 69 and older category won't be challenged for a good long while I betcha.
Unless you are committed to following the original route, the free variation from Sickle (5.10d) to reach the very bottom of the Stovelegs is direct and allows you to easily bypass the average party dealing with two pendulums. Fun way to stretch out the Stovelegs too!

"Donini and Lowe, along with a 20-year-old friend, completed the Evolution Traverse in the Sierra in a fast two days in 2010. The remote, eight-mile route crosses nine peaks over 13,000 feet, with extensive fourth- and fifth-class climbing that they climbed almost entirely free-solo. At the time, they were 67 and 66, respectively."

Whew. What a relief. Jim and George are leading the way. Tangible evidence underpinning audacious hope.
If I had known how much easier it was going to be to wait until my eight decade to climb the Nose, I could have saved a lot of sleepless nights and age anxiety over the past several decades. Most men my age only worry about finding a bathroom and smelling bad: secretly, I had to also worry about never having climbed the Nose.
However, now knowing the benefits of waiting, I can even upgrade my hopes for a NIALT ascent to a NIAD project, blowing right by NIAFDs.
I have 7 more years before I have to seriously work on my training.
Time for a nap and some daytime TV.

For the Race Across America (RAAM) they use the average age of the team. A person I used to ride road bikes with, Durwood was on the 70+ team that shattered the record for 70+ last year and broke the 60+ record by a comfortable margin as well.
In my early 40s I was riding 100 - 150 miles a week and Durward was right in the thick of things with us. He had retired years ago and was devoting his life to riding his road bike.
I know life has plan for all of us and sooner or later age and illness will find us all; but for a lucky few this seems to be well into the 70s or even 80s.

What is the over/under on their time? Now that I am getting older, I would vote for a more safety conscious but slower attempt. I would be happy just pulling off the NAID at 40+ years old. Regardless of climb duration , this is a bold and very cool goal. Can't wait to hear about the adventure.

YER
GONNA
CRUSH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
^^ EDIT: (from 'yer gonna die'.)!
PS - Dood, "yer gonna die!" is what J Muir advised Teddy Roosevelt ("Teddy, yer gonna die!") when he asked Muir for some last minute advice before climbing the tallest Doug Fir they could find (100+ ft) in Yose during a raging winter storm and then proceeded to howl at the wind (just like Muir was notorious for doing).
And Warren Harding, upon hearing of Royal Robbins intentions of doing the SA of the Nose ground up (no fixed pitches) looked him straight in the eye and said, "Royal, yer gonna die!". And, RR famously responded, "Batso, were gonna crush it!".
SO, i felt that Donini & Lowe were more than worthy of a similar distinction. ... wudevah!

I think there is a distinct possibility of having to rescue them if Donini drops his blue Camalot.
The problem, J-do is finding recently, is that no matter where he goes (and however fast he might go) he still is there damnit. As for George, he obviously burns a hell of a lot cleaner and seems really unearthly in his consistency. Best to them. When is this going to take place?

You are best advised not to ask. George is a man of mystery and his peregrinations may or may not be subject to classified purview.

I agree with Coz, it really isn't that newsworthy. As to talking about it in advance, Dougald MacDonald asked me at the AAC meeting in Berkeley if we were keeping it hush, hush. I said no, i didn't care one way or another, thus it ended up on the Climbing Mag. blog and the op picked it up and here it is. Dougald works on editing for the AAC and i thought maybe he, at most, wanted to put something in the AAC newsletter. George and i are both ex officials of the AAC and are both committed to letting climbers know that the AAC isn't comprised of a bunch of old guys sitting around drinking expensive port and smoking Cuban cigars.
You're absolutely right Coz, certainly not an earth shattering event, but possibly a tiny bit inspirational for the aging population here on ST as the recent thread on approaching 60 shows. I hit 70 this Summer so maybe those approaching the big 60 can look forward to another decade.
Just back from two days at Indian Creek....with the cat out of the bag, i need to get serious- the pressure is on!

I don't care if it's newsworthy. We play a stupid game anyway. It's is something fun to banter about on a climbing message board.

Newsworthy yes but remember that reporters want to turn people into cartoon characters for their stories. If you're going to be a cartoon character, make sure you design it not them.

Hmmm, let's see.
J-Do, an icon of American climbing. Been cranking for what? 50+ years?
hard core off width climber, Patagonia wunder kid-man-thenoldfart.
GL - arguably climbing harder moves than anyone else at the time.
Moving towards (or reached 70) and they're planning a NIAD?
Freaking A Right that's news worthy.
Kerist coz, 70 year old guys even thinking about something like this?
And you want to whine on the parade ? Wake up man.
Is it more news worthy after the fact, yeah, sure.
But these guys don't spew and beat their own drums.
The fact the thread has 100+ responses indicates the level of interest.
I say they flash it.
And if they don't, so what. The attempt is awesome and is what really matters!
Go lads go!

Whether they succeed or not they will certainly put a few new wrinkles on the NIAD history.

My Mother always told me, don't talk about what you are going to do, just go out and do it.
I agree with that, but some times telling others about something you going to do gives you a bit extra motivation to train harder. Even though I climb for myself if I tell someone I will do something, it puts a bit more pressure on me to do it..climbing is not only about crushing hard routes. There is much more to it, like individual stories of people pushing their limits etc. Even though I don't think the chose a hard enough objective to give them a REAL challenge with big epic potential etc. Jim did Positive Vibrations on the Hulk a few years ago and has done so much climbing that he forgot more about it than I will ever learn. lol. I think The Shield in a day would be a better challenge for him :)

Perhaps you mistake Climbing Mag as a "News" source. That may be more to the point.. lol. It seems Donini agrees with you on the "newsworthy" point I'm sure he just shakes his head bemusedly if he even thinks about it much.
It is as good a discussion topic as any on ST though.
I do think that certain "projects" are reasonable for articles in Magazines. Some Climbers have developed high enough reputation that their "projects" under progress are given a better than average level of respect. Caldwell's New Dawn, Hans and Alex'es speed attempt last year prior to sucess. Conrad and friends Meru the same. For that matter whether you like it or not Coz if it were leaked that you had some cool new project most folks would find it noteworthy based on your stellar credentials.
Certainly Donini and Lowe have the credentials that many feel this goal is almost in the bag before it's attempted. I know it's not quite that simple and nothing is done till it's done. But we sure have a high level of confidence in them.

Dude, it's a forum. People talk about things, perhaps too much.
News as you talk of it is dead. Yeah, there will be write ups of notable ascents in the AAJ and Alpinist, but this is not that.
It's people talking about something that inspires them. It creates conversation. What is wrong with that?

+1 what Brandon said. It's all just talking about climbing and wishing and hoping anyway, mental masturbation at its finest.

Yosemite needs paparazzi. I am not talking quality Tom Evans photos, I'm talking Hollywood style stuff. Supertopo is kinda like the TMZ of the climbing world. Photogs lurking behind boulders, trees and even on larger ledge systems.
Maybe Supertopo could start paying for photos of interest. Come on who would not want to see 2 startled old dudes/climbing legends trying to smack an annoying photographer with a blue camelot as they approach a training climb. Think of all the other Yosemite shenanigans that could be documented forever on the internets. ST could become a huge revenue stream and CMac could make tax deductible donations to all the fundraisers on the fourm.
OK I am done, that is my troll for the day

How is the training going? I kind of want to do NIAD too. Not sure if ready, but sounds challenging as hell ATM.

I dunno... single push on 5/1/2013 maybe, but IAD might be until end of summer for the Vit-meister. Back on topic with the geriatric badass IAD attempt! Rumors, sitings of training in progress, backpacks filled with stones, etc.
