f*#k off
Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

I remember more strong women than men that I have admired, for them............
Im A Strong woman
I have stood firm through my storm and I am still standing
I have rolled down many hills only to find myself standing back up, dust myself off and just to keep it pushing
I have fought through the hardest time in my life only to shine like the strong woman that stands before you now
I have cried a million tears and felt like life was not worth living only to get up the next day to see that the tears had dried up and a new day has come.
I am a strong woman to every part of my soul; I may not look like it but walk a day in my shoes then tell me.
I have seen things that you cannot imagine and still I can see the good in people
I have been made to be this woman that holds the world in her hands and still do not feel as if I belong, I may only be a superwoman to myself but I am who I am and in this world it matter not what you think of me but what I think of me.
I have had lost the best of me and still I push on like it never happened please do not take that lightly it has effect on me like no other but I am while aware of what I need to do to live until God lets me go. I am a strong woman

They didn't CARE if they were "offensive". They told it like they saw it. Truth can and will hurt. Ask THOSE guys if they gave a damn if they stepped on your toes. You might want to draw those toes back, hmm? Your thoughts?
If that is what you are asking people to recall, I would have to say your title ought better to have been "Do You Remember When Men Were Assholes?"
It was only low-quality, boorish people who didn't "care" if they were offensive, same as it is now. Decent men were never intentionally, or uncaringly offensive. Telling it like you saw it was/is great in some situations, but many who "call it like they see it" have faulty perceptions.
Ask if they gave a damn? I am sure the type the OP describes did not/do not. I try to avoid that type of human. They have nothing to offer except a selfish and narcissistic attitude.

Real men definitely don't hate on the ponies! There is a Celtic saying that goes, "Never trust a warrior that doesn't dance." I'd add that, yeah, it's important to be tough when you have to, but to really qualify as a man is to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done and especially when it is in the service of others or for a cause that serves others, that serving primarily his own ego diminishes a man, and that real men should be able to cry and to be able to nurture and care for, to protect and guide, and to serve the cause of women to create the world out of their natures. The bigger man isn't the one who is mostly self serving, but who serves something bigger than himself. This is being a man, in my estimation/IMHO!
Then there is the lone wolf kind of man, they do have a certain appeal, though they are mostly only useful to themselves.
The Men Who Don't Fit In*
Robert W. Service
"There's a race of men that don't fit in,
A race that can't stay still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin,
And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and they rove the flood,
And they climb the mountain's crest;
Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.
If they just went straight they might go far;
They are strong and brave and true;
But they're always tired of the things that are,
And they want the strange and new.
They say: "Could I find my proper groove,
What a deep mark I would make!"
So they chop and change, and each fresh move
Is only a fresh mistake.
And each forgets, as he strips and runs
With a brilliant, fitful pace,
It's the steady, quiet, plodding ones
Who win in the lifelong race.
And each forgets that his youth has fled,
Forgets that his prime is past,
Till he stands one day, with a hope that's dead,
In the glare of the truth at last.
He has failed, he has failed; he has missed his chance;
He has just done things by half.
Life's been a jolly good joke on him,
And now is the time to laugh.
Ha, ha! He is one of the Legion Lost;
He was never meant to win;
He's a rolling stone, and it's bred in the bone;
He's a man who won't fit in."

Truth is not the province of "Men".
What you are pining for is this:
Here’s a phrase new to me — although certainly not the behavior it describes — male answer syndrome. This weekend, the NPR show On The Media will examine this habit of answering a question with great certainty even when you have no idea what you’re talking about.
You are looking with great fondness at stupidity.
What is called in a father cold aloofness and brutality toward his children
What is called in a partner abusive
You may think this is what makes a "Man", it is what I think makes a mouse.

Have a sense of humor folks... Life is not serious, you'll be dead tomorrow and trust me none of this will matter. Only thing that registers on the long term scale, only thing that last after death is love.
This motto will save your sanity, make your life richer, more fulfilling, accomplished, etc. Plus a whole lot less drama!

I'd have to put my grandfather in the "real man" category.
He was a full-time cattle rancher and a full-time log truck driver for more years then I even know...his handle was "Cattle Baron" haha.
One winter morning - this had to be when he was in his early 60's - he was throwing a binder chain on the first load of the day. A link broke, and the come along came swinging down and hit his feet, knocking him on his ass.
He laid under the truck for about 30 minutes, and finally managed to get back in the truck. He could barely move his left foot.
He tied up his laces as tight as he could - this being the clutch foot on a '69 Pete - drove 6 loads, went home, saw to the cattle, had dinner, then went to the hospital. Ankle shattered in three places.
Good luck finding that level of tough or that work ethic in today's generation. It seems to me that many "real men" and "real women" existed in my grandfather and my father's times - the current generation and especially the next will never come close. Scary.
