Looks interesting. Would probably be fun to spend a bit of time there getting to know the local denizens. Excellent opportunity for a writer, to capture some colorful stories.
There are big abandoned military bases on the drive from San Francisco to Boise that look like they could be repurposed for cheap retirement spots like this. Pretty barren landscape.
My mom and dad stayed there a couple times while passing through (Denver to San Diego)in the late 80's/early 90's ... as I recall the procedure was to dig a hole and stick the grey water/black water hoses in the hole ... lot's of interesting folks there ... price was right ...
I watched that documentary recently. Classic twackers and weirdos.
Start digging through those VICE documentaries and you'll find some weird-ass sh!t !!!!
I just watched one about a guy that's been injecting himself with snake venom for 20 years, one about a dude that went to trip on poisonous frog jelly in the Amazon, and one about a chick that lived in an LSD/MDMA factory in an underground missile silo in the midwest.
It used to be respectable, I have heard that it has gone downhill. Snowbirds were high level dirtbags. questionable characters now. That area was quite the destination many decades ago.
Slab City seems to have its good neighborhoods and its bad neighborhoods.
Salvation Mountain is very interesting.
First time I was there, Mr Knight ran up to me and handed me a Salvation Mountain jigsaw puzzle and a DVD. Next time I visited, I had some aerial photos for him. And a half-dozen half-empty cans of leftover paint.
Spent a few weeks there a couple of years ago while traveling in our motorhome. Great stuff. Salt of the Earth, etc....Leonard is the sh#t.

EXACTlY what was so cool about it. No fuddy duddies there! I know, met them all in Quartzite...
I smoked pot with a guy old enough to be my great grandfather outside of the outdoor improvised library at slab city. Wonderful people, for the most part.
