Moments after taking this photo, I quickly changed the film in my camera just as the railroad guys nabbed me. In most of the world, taking photos of railway stations, police station, military bases and such things is frowned upon for security reasons. I was grabbed by the elbows and hauled off to meet my fate. I ended up in a very unlikely place, the switch house. I was taken upstairs to the switch room to whoever was in charge of the switch yard. It was pretty neat to be in the tower with all the big switch levers and a 360 degree view of everything. They asked for the film in my camera so I opened it up and gave them the blank roll. The yard master or whoever he was turned out to be a nice guy. We chatted and I told him I was an engineering student and found steam engines pretty fascinating. I think we even had tea and then he sent me on my way.

The only other time the cops ever grabbed me was at the post office in Kathmandu a month or so later. I was at the window buying stamps for a letter home but the clerk was stalling and taking his time. Turned out he was buying time for the cops to sneak up on me and grab me. They drug me into a little room and started asking questions about the envelope I was trying to mail which had a lump in it. They thought I was trying to mail drugs. It was actually a letter to my mom and since I had had some photos taken for trekking permit and visa applications, I was mailing some of them to her because she hadn't seen me in 6 months or so and wouldn't see me for another 6.
