Thanks smidogg - had that CD for years now. It is afro-funky stuff though. Kind' Fela Kuti-ish with a touch more James Bown influence. I saw Fela Kuti in France a long time ago - bad azz band. Manu Dibango too - that cat can blow. Big afro-funk sound.

Yeah, 'Antibalas' - those cats are cool! tight sound too...

Man where's the new funkmasters? Hip-hop and rap are getting less funky all the time.
When's Sly's new CD coming out? Clinton's new CD is cool - 'How Late Do U have 2 B B 4 U R Absent' - especially the cut with Prince (way stinky). Prince's new CD is OK but I thought 'Musicology' was funkier. Morris Day's last 'new' thing is cool - especially 'My Ride' with E-40 - fat groove. T.O.P.'s last CD is killer - hope they come out with a new one soon...

Who got da' funk anymore??????

LOL, Some of my students were big on grilles.

A grille is a metal dental ornament, usually gold plated, taht looks something likea retainer but is just for looks.

They tend to get banned at school.

Some kids would make thier own out of foil, or cuewing fum wrappers to fool you.

Can't tell you how many tomes I said things like, "Charles put the grille in your pocket.

IT's a black thing, excuse me, a black kid thing, the adults think a grille is pretty dumb.

I love the old funk, but dont know any funk bands of today. As for other genres picking up some influences and carrying it on, i can recommend a few artists. As for hip hop, outkast and particularly their older stuff is packed full of funk and classic funk samples with some southern flow over the top. Also their is this great reggae band that i think sounds, farely funky for a reggae band, and they are john brown's body.
cheers,

Wow, Mussy and I did have the funk going on that night. Though I think Mussy had more funk going than I did. I went lite™ on the bling that night. It's about time to acquire more bling and get more funkadelic.

I still laugh at the photo - crimpy wanted me and Mussy to hug but instead we busted out that pose. That was some Funky Poker that night.

OK. First off, I think the word would be "Stanky", as in put some stank on it... =)

I'm somewhat pleasantly surprised, for some reason. Who'd a thought...? Funkateers in a climbing forum?

JB. If you give me some time and email me offline, I can hook you up with some Prince stuff that you can't buy. Long story. Have video, sounds, etc. Live/unreleased. I'd have to dig a bit, and convert to digital formats, but it's there. Also have some other Minneapolis stuff in general.

I really like some of Outkast's stuff. The Speakerboxx album had some great funky stuff on it! Definitely different from anything else in the newer stuff. I listen to it often. But nothing tops the "P-Funk. Un-cut funk. The Bomb..."

Cheers!

Locker, if you want to avoid WallFart and save some $$, you can download stuff cheap at allofmp3.com - an album is usually less than 2 bucks.

And if you guys don't mind some sampling and remixing, this is a cool album full of funkiness produced by King Britt, When the Funk Hits the Fan. Maybe a bit on the disco tip, but still smells funky.

A very fine Nigerian funk compilation, unfortunately the record label has gone bust and it's getting quite hard to source at a reasonable price. You might find tracks out there on p2p or get lucky second-hand. Try the psychedellic "Kita Kita" or more mellow "No Discrimination". If anyone can find this on vinyl for me, I'll pay them well...

If anyone doesn't have Fela Kuti's "No Agreement", just go and buy it right now!

If you like Fela, then Geraldo Pino is worth a listen:
http://www.sternsmusic.com/disk_info/RETRO20CD
1960s inspiration to the man, very James Brown. Try "Born to be free".

Attention Funkateers and Funkarettes! May I direct your attention to:

Daptone Records! Visit their website here: http://www.daptonerecords.com/pages/home.html

Do it! Do it now! And you will see that, although not at the forefront of popular music today, The Funk is alive and well! My personal favorite is The Budos Band - a few young cats that hail from Staten Island, often defined as an "Afro Funk Powerhouse"! Also be sure to check out The Poets of Rhythm - they're actually from Germany but DAAAAAM they can funk with the best of 'em!

Those are just a couple examples of what Daptone Records has to offer - theres lots more!

Yikes!...here's some tunes on my playlist now...

"Groove Eternal" on "Play with Bootsy" (Bootsy Collins) - sick groove for the 2nd half of the tune!

"In My Ride" on "It's About Time" (Morris Day) - another sick groove w/ E-40 rappin'.

"Funk Express Card", "J.R." (Just Right), and "Funk Me Dirty" all on Bootsy's "Blasters of the Universe" - extremely funky grooves.

"Gett Off" by Prince & the NPG (album???) - serious bass heavy groove.

"Living in America", "Gravity", and "Goliath" by James Brown ("Gravity" album) - always good grooves for free soloing!

Anyway - I gotta stop before my brain explodes.....keep it on the one, jb

Make my funk the P.Funk
I wants to get funked up.
I want the bomb,
I want the P.Funk
Don't want my funk stepped on

Heard Stevie Wonder playing Sir Duke this morning on the way to work...What a great horn line...

Music is a world within itself
With a language we all understand
With an equal opportunity
For all to sing, dance and clap their hands
But just because a record has a groove
Don't make it in the groove
But you can tell right away at letter A
When the people start to move

They can feel it all over
They can feel it all over people
They can feel it all over
They can feel it all over people

Music knows it is and always will
Be one of the things that life just won't quit
But here are some of music's pioneers
That time will not allow us to forget
For there's Basie, Miller, Satchmo
And the king of all Sir Duke
And with a voice like Ella's ringing out
There's no way the band can lose

You guys like some Motown right? Of course you do! So you need to check out this movie called Standing in the Shadows of Motown.

Its a documentary made in 2002 (I think? ... could be '01) about the little-known yet wildly famous in-house Motown band called The Funk Brothers. To quote directly from the movie:

"By the end of their phenomenal run, this unheralded group of musicians had played on more number ones hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined - which makes them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music."

I think that says it all right there ... check it out!

There's a clip here on this website that shows the actual recording of 'The Temptations' in the studio making 'My Girl'....

http://www.youtube.com/results?search=The+Temptations&search_type=search_videos

Also 'The Funk Brothers' including the legendary James Jamerson playing his bass with one finger for one of many, many songs he recorded for Motown. Very cool and timeless music...!

Years ago, I lived in a condo complex here and I kept thinking I recognized the security guard ring leader/manager... Was a really nice guy when he'd let me in the gate, etc... Got to talking to him one night, as he was making his rounds and passing my place. Turns out he was "Hair" from Tower of Power. Was pretty cool. =)

Have a goody package almost ready for a trip to Mammoth, as well.

JB- I blew my knee to bits waterskiing last weekend and I've been Mr. Mom all week. I am however, afforded ample time to listen to my CD's loudly while my kids are at camp. I came upon some older classics:

Break Beats #1-#4 /Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, George Duke,
Jimmy Smith, Herbie Hancock and about 35 other good tunes.

Move to Groove, The Best 1970's Jazz-Funk/ JB's, Fred Wesley
Jimmy Smith, Roy Ayers, Geoge Duke, Kool and the Gang,
Ohio Players, Coke Escovedo, Chick Corea and many more.

Jimmy Smith, Walk on the Wild Side/ 25 great tunes.

Les McCann and Eddie Harris/ Swiss Movement/One of my alltime
favorites, mostly jazz but funky nonetheless.

Original Raw Soul, This is Acid Jazz/ heavy duty compilation.

Bachar- you most likely have all this music already, but who knows?

Enjoy! ;)seamus

cool stuff...Freddie Wilson was another one of the many James Brown types that funked in that style.

Archie has that unmistakable tone. I got a lot of his stuff. It's so cool you can see this stuff on YouTube.com. It would be so hard to find this on DVD...

If I didn't play sax (alto and bari - sold my tenor and soprano a while ago), I'd play bass as well. I got an EWI that's wicked for laying down bass tracks - still not as fun as a sax though.

Here's some fun-ky stuff...just for the funk of it.

This is a great time for high quality re-releases of obscure and otherwise unavailable funky music.

Labels like Numero Group and Soundway are consistently putting out amazing music--all fully licensed and often straight from the masters.

If you're at all into the idea of Cuban funk, I produced a fully licensed compilation of Cuban funk from the 70s on my label Waxing Deep. It's called "Si Para Usted: The Funky Beats of Revoluiontary Cuba". I give you permission to download it illegally on the condition that if you like it, you'll buy vol. 2!

Meanwhile, I've got a website (www.waxingdeep.org) that has eight years worth of radio shows that are pretty funk heavy, but I also played a lot of jazz and the like. I haven't updated it ages on account of starting a new corporate gig and trying to take my climbing to another level, but there's tonnes of good stuff there to check out.

Cheers,
