Yeah, they kick ass! Last pack you'll ever need. Nothing has come close to quality in the last 25 years.

BOMBER!
Made by hand in the USA by a climber. You call the number on the website, Randy, the owner answers the phone. You want custom work, talk with him about it and he will do it for a reasonable price. These packs are not loaded with BS features you see at REI, but instead built to be used and last forever. To put it anther way, I consider my CCW Chernobyl to be one of the best gear purchases I have ever made.

Bought the chernobyl about ten years ago. Finally retired it last year. It did everything I needed it to and then some. I climbed well over 200 days a year for four of those years and it was with me every time. So yeah I'd say those packs are as solid as they come.

Simple, clean, super bomber durable, and beautifully made. One thing to note is I believe none of the packs have stays in the frame, but a durable foam pad [corrected thanks to a note below... shows you how much I'm climbing these days!]. This might be an issue for some who want a bit more rigidity when carrying a load.
I have the ozone for a crag pack. My dream pack.

Never owned one but one of my oldest partners has one. A really sweet pack. Hard to beat the design and simplicity. Plus, the guy's woodblock prints are really cool. If I were an alpine climber I'd own one.

My current pack is not CCW, but I owned a Chernobyl for about 12+ years, during which it was put to heavy dirtbag, climbing more days than not, guiding when not climbing kind of use. Bomber pack. Highly recommended.

Great packs. Own two, use em all the time. But, contrary to what someone posted above, they do not have a plastic frame sheet, only a foam bivy pad. But they can still carry heavy loads if packed well. Plus, made in the USA!

Yet another big vote for CCW packs. My Chernobyl is still going strong after 12-15 years (longer?) of thrashing in the alpine, ice, cragging. Very functional design. Carries surprisingly well for such a simple and unreinforced design (just a folded up internal foam pad which can be removed for a rude bivy).

Still using my chaos for multi day climbing trips. And kinda super light back packing. 15 years old it is, going strong!

Another thumbs up for CCW packs. Clean, no frills and functional. Just wish they had an option for side water bottle pockets.

Seems I've only heard good things about CCW, though you might also look at CiloGear, built in Portland OR. Their 30L Worksack is more than a pound lighter than the Chernobyl and very well thought of.

Cilo's 30L worksack may be lighter, but it's also smaller (30L pack vs ~50L) and won't last nearly as long. My 60L worksack lasted all of a 6 months, the replacement 45L worksack lasted ~ a year before it started to crack up, finally died a year after that. My chernobyl (which was actually lighter than my 45L worksack) is now 4 years old and gets more use than my worksacks ever did and still looks brand new. Don't f*#k around, buy the best.

Good Question...
|

I still have my Chernobyl from the late eighties/early nineties...one of the few packs I brought to India and keep here. I use it for everything. Second best pack I ever had.
My favorite got ripped off in Yosemite years ago. I think it was an old Ballistic cloth Gramicci. I know I had a Gramicci haul bag from BITD that was ballistics...

The Cilogear stuff is very versatile, and carries really, really well… but it's not particularly well-constructed — at least, for the money — and my 30L Work Sack weighs more than spec. Not vastly more, but let's just say it's nicer to be surprised when a piece of gear weighs less than spec. And that it does not often happen.
D. Burns's experience is the same:
http://coldthistle.blogspot.com/2012/04/climbing-packs-part-2.html
The short version: don't believe posted specs unless you've measured yourself, using a known-accurate instrument.

Agreed. The best alpine pack you're likely to find for the money - certainly the best alpine pack made by a fellow climber here in the U.S. My Chernobyl has been hauled up el cap, gone climbing and skiing in the alps, fallen down ice slopes, overloaded and abused and still looks like new. Again, fabulous and built by an actual climber, not a factory in China.

"Brings to mind insane and pathetic homeless people". WOW! Most are not that and probably came from sane and healthy backgrounds.
If yer alpine climbing with less than 20 lbs packs yer doing pretty good!
Love my ColdCold World, never wished I had another pack in the backcountry and it would be my choice if I went homeless!
Peace
