I think stacked sockets and a big vice work better than pounding out.
When they are that hard to get out I have found getting them lined up properly while starting in the new ones to be the hardest part.....
Good luck!

hehehe,, yes it makes one feel rather inept when you KNOW about lock rings..But i had never replaced the factory jobs before, and all my books say they have JUST the nylon locks which i burnt out- squirted out the ports just like in the movies, so i "had it"....KNOTT! And yes, i should have used the STRONGER glasses i have..;-) I wont make that mistake again..

Pounding? Don't you have a cir-clip removal tool? You can file down a pair of needle nose pliers and make one, or buy a dedicated unit specifically built for cir-clip removal. The ends of the cir-clip removal tool have tiny points that fit into the little holes in the cir-clips. You squeeze them tighter than the circumference of the u-joint, and they just come out like that.
Oh! I see now that you already got them off. Good job! At least you didn't have to do it on the side of the road in Wyoming at 10 below in a snow storm. That would get you motivated.

Been there, done that. But to add insult to injury, a skunk squirted the underside of the car a few minutes before.
