Ok so I know it's ot, but it's almost winter and I know some tacos like to slide too! Any sport which involves sliding on snow is welcome here. Show me some pictures! Tell me a story!

I am currently standing in line at Blackcomb mountain in whistler bc waiting for opening day to commence.

We had a nice little pink hue this morning

have a brand new snowboard
have season pass to Eldora
live in Boulder, CO
have a real job

(never ever have I been able to say all of that at once)

which one doesn't fit in to me getting 40 days in this year.

The second week of March I'm heading to Costa Rica at which point my ski season will be over and it'll be climbing season when I return.

does this post belong in the first world problems thread?

Dave- Nice faceplant indeed! Thanks for the video! what are those planks you're rocking? Interesting shovel.

Nature- You got sick days right? Those are for powder days. Weekends are for keeping your pimp hand strong for the good days.. :)

Mouse- Line waiting is minimal in the early season.... Besides I figure I wait around while belaying so what's the difference? When the lines get really lame I have a secret weapon.

Big Mike-

those planks are made by Moment. local kid from gardnerville started making them a few years ago. He is now making them in Reno!!!

All the tips and tails are squared off. I asked him why the square tips and he said they are for conversation purposes. good marketing, sets them apart from other companies.

At lunch I met up with my sister Tash and her friend Jesse. After lunch we got a rare treat. Conditions were right and patrol opened up the avalanche closures allowing us to hike to 7th heaven.

Tash and Jesse earning their turns

Halfway up the cat track

Tash tried to bail, but I managed to convince her to make the journey.

We chilled in the patrol hut for a bit and got safety concerns taken care of. Then we headed over to the drop in point.

Tash dropping into Sudan Couloir (aka xtreme)

She gets a slash in under Bushrat

by this point we were all pretty bagged so we headed to Merlin's for some beer and nachos.

The K2 splits a quite nice, I really like the way the skins attach.

I have a home made one.

They're all good, just find one the shape you like.

Although I havent tried them yet, SPARK or VOILE split specific bindings, the pricey but shave weight and remove the half inch rise.

Damn I love having a whole mountain with just your bros and the billy goats!

SO. . . I've never ridden in a chair like that. . . looks pretty cool. . . errrr warm. . .

Might be weird to be on there with somebody who's claustro, eh?

Ekat- it rains a lot on the lower mountain so the bubble is vey advantageous for keeping dry so you don't freeze up top. Some people just won't put it down for sure.

I'm slacking this morning since there wasn't much fresh and I'm hanging out with my girlfriend on her day off. Heard they might crack the alpine tho so I might head up for a hike.

POW

Ya Ekat it's still pretty thin. 100cm base with more up top and not much in the valley. Most stuff is roped off area boundary except the man made stuff but we don't follow the rules. I've lived here when we had next to no snow and if you didn't go ride the boney stuff you didn't get any pow. You get used to it, dial back your expectations a little.. I still push it tho....

The road to powder

People drop this in fat winters. Some hurt themselves when they miss the pocket.

Still a bit boney for sure.

Thanks Lucky Pink! Glad to hear your enjoying it.

So here is the meat of my run. I spotted this little chute on the way up. I've ridden it many times before but probably not with so little snow.

What you can't see is the five foot drop into the pocket that you really hope isn't full of rocks.

Here is the after shot.

If you are astute you will notice that I set off quite the little slab... I dropped into the chute and was trying to land sideways but i didn't quite get it around so i took off to the left and did a quick power slash to stop. I could see that pocket below me just looked to fat and juicy and had no anchor so I cut left on to the shoulder trying to intiate the slab and stay on the high point.

Mission was successful and i dug my fists in to self arrest and watched the slab careen off the small cliff.

I managed some nice turns in the snow that was left and made my way down to the toe to take the photo.

It was kind of a serene moment with scenery to match.

The moon

7th was glowing.

The avy didn't really shake me up, been there done that kind of thing. I'm glad I was suspect tho and didn't just charge right into the pocket.

I cut through boomer bowl and hit some nice trees left of gunbarrels on the way down.

Took this one of the bottom of harmony on the hike out.

Amazing sunset..

On the ski out just above mid-station

What can i say?

Oh ya..

So very true sir. Nice photo..

When you get to the top of Harmony it's just a little bit further to the peak.

I actually hiked this part twice because a lady asked me if I'd dropped my glove up by harmony, and all my stuff was in my pack, so i thought i might have. it was only a short walk but when i got back there it wasn't even my glove!! Doh!!!

Just up around the bend...

I love being in the mountains!!

I hiked the extra twenty feet to the Peak just for some shots....

He did.

Since this area is Permanently Closed I normally wouldn't post these pics but because Peak is area boundary right now it's fair game.

You should note that in the pic I posted above, I'm not actually "skiing."
I'm on skis, yes, but not moving. So while I may look like a real skier,
don't be fooled. The pack on my back weighed about 50 pounds, and I used it
to help me develop the style of skiing now known as "linked headplants."

I got to some interesting places on skis, but the only thing that ever got
shredded when I skied was my ego.

Tons o' fun, though.

Hey Mike, you've been getting after it man. There were at least two chutes you showed that have me really jonesing for steep terrain.

Gotta love that going over the top of the moon feeling. You know it goes, but you can't see what's coming. Commitment, that's what skiing steep lines is all about.

Thanks for sharing your early season turns.

Edit; Skiing or riding, makes no difference to me. Fun is fun.

Tell you the truth that first line I showed, I scoped from the other side of the valley and I was pretty damn sure it went but when you're dropping in over that blind roll like you said it's definitely the ultimate feeling of commitment!!!

This is my home mountain, ten minutes down the road. Not exciting, but it's close

This is where the goods are. A couple of hours north. They get more snow than Colorado and the terrain is the most challenging lift access you'll find in these parts

Nope. Used to ten years ago. It's a small town but has lots of expensive homes. Permanent residents hover around 10000 bursting to 20000+ during the winter. I live about 5 minutes from town in a basement suite. My landlord is a cityit that doesn't come up too often. It's a decent spot..

Lots of older homes here too and ugly rentals..

Ekat it was awesome! It was puking all night almost all the way back to the valley. It was a bit busy but it's a weekend, so to be expected..

I hear ya on the liability thing. I understand too, I think it was more the thought of flattening pow which is not the norm around here. Every effort is made to preserve the nice snow by grooming things early as possible, but some key routes are always manicured and I'm sure the same thing was in effect that day, but I was impatient of course ;) I've learned a lot since then too.. :)

Here's another shot of Jersey Cream lift

I met up with Woody and Rick for a couple laps and then they went home and I went for lunch.

After a snack I saw Harmony Chair on Whistler was open on the light board, so I jumped on the eat to eat. Harmony was a huge line if course since it was Saturday and it was the only alpine chair open. I was alone so I found a three and jumped in. When I got to the top, I decided to head up to excitation, a sweet chute into glacier bowl.

When I got there a bunch of people were standing around watching one guy trying to hack a hole in the cornice. I waited for a bit and when he gave up I slid over to his hole to have a look and dropped the whole tab....

Spider senses kicked in immediately and I buried my fists behind me when I landed to stay in place and watched the snow fall away.

I had a pretty sweet run after that but it was low vis... I guess I was little gungho because I'm familiar with the terrain but i really need to stop pushing my luck...

I got a picture of some kitty kats for the un-blinny from the top of Red chair.

Thanks for the link to the video Ryand! That's a pretty accurate peak chair representation actually! Lots of gorbs sending themselves off big cliffs with flat landings. Much to the lift lines viewing pleasure. We haven't had one yet. First opening will be tomorrow.

During my crystal lap I lost woody and when I got to the top again, the right side was open which I took as an indication that they would be opening Jersey soon finally. I went to the chair and decided to start the line. Woody and gang showed up not long after and we waited for about 25 mins.

First chair

After a sick tree run the gang went down the hill and I called my buddy Jesse who I had plans to meet up with. We met up at Jersey and went down to the eat 2 eat, so we could hit up harmony.

After awhile a mass exodus occurred and we were stoked to be near the front.

These are the rest of the Wednesday pics. It's been a crazy powder daze kinda week and it's been slowly catching up to me. After 6 pow days in a row you get pretty spent, both mentally and physically.

Sandra cruising Upper Franzes

Sandra met up with some girlfriends and I met up with Relic and Brownie. It was Relic's first day in a couple years and he was stoked!

Whistler riders learn to go fast so they don't have to skate as much on the flat spots...
Kieran on the left Relic on the Right

We did some sick tree laps, brownie dropping in.

Relic at Green chair

Brownie at Green

Then we went to the Goat Path, Kieran traversing in.

Relic hiking up the path

After a sick run on the ridge we went back to red chair and then spotted that harmony wzs open.

We were behind the curve because we did an extra run, which is why the line was so huge, so we decided to head back towards peak chair and ride excitation. It was pretty wind packed on that aspect but we still had some pretty smooth turns.

Relic was getting hungry and Brownie just wanted to keep going so we split up and i went for lunch with Relic.

After lunch we met up with Kyle at Harmony and then saw that Peak chair was open. We rushed over there and then did a line through whistler bowl to get to Jimi's Eye

Kyle dropping Jimi's Eye

We got another sick run in on peak after this which made for another awesome day.

Then we headed back to Blackcomb on the Eat to Eat to get back to the cars.
we had it all to ourselves!!!

I went riding yesterday too, but took today off. Too much of a good thing can still be too much sometimes.. :)

Wow, that story about Sunday is crazy. All the patrol officers in Whistler are rookies, it's a good first stop out of the academy since "real" crime is minimal. Dealing with drunks, stolen bikes & boards & traffic citations are the major focus. A lot of the officers are young & have been known to be a little cocky with their new position, for this reason they don't always get a lot of respect from the younger party crowd. Luckily nobody got seriously hurt, except the kid who got arrested probably took a bit of an extra lickin' from the boys for causing the scene.

Sorry for the OT, here's a quick shaky edit of my first run o the season the other day- so fun!

Yeah I was there. I know someone did actually *touch* a cop's gun, but I don't know whether or not they actually tried to grab it. The guy getting arrested (not posting names for privacy) wasn't the person who did that, as may have been reported by some media.
He also didn't yell anything at the cops, aside from asking why he was being arrested and what are his rights.
The only resisting arrest that occurred was him lying down and not moving - he didn't try and fight them. There is a lot of video of it, so hopefully that will be able to clear some of the charges. The crowd didn't encourage him to resist, they just yelled at the cops.

John- tough choice indeed. The snow has been very good here if that skews your opinion at all. I haven't been to big sky or any Utah resorts so I can't compare, but you know we have the acreage. I am booked for Jackson. Last time, we arrived in a Blizzard. Don't recommend this, we were late.

We also arrived in Whistler during a huge dump. SUVs flipped over like mad coming up from Vancouver.

But well worth it. The day after, about 20,000 people came up from SEA/TAC. They were jumping off a cliff. Not trying to land on their feet either. People landing on their backs, headfirst, it even put Tuckerman to shame.

Ekat you know I wanna see more pics! It's nice to have friends in the right places sometimes eh? I always stop to see if people need help when I'm out sledding. I'd hate to be stuck and not have others offer the same.

sick t*r! What mountain were you shredding today?

Here's my report.

2cms was the official overnight total.

Everything was pretty pooched so we hiked up to the Blackcomb Glacier which wasn't open yet.

My buddy Rick at the top of the blowhole

Our line, The Blowhole

It was pretty darn whiteout up there. After you exit the blowhole if you go right you get into a wide open glacier with 0 reference points. Talk about vertigo....

I took this pano before we dropped in at the toe of the glacier.

That was it, we jumped on the chair again but were more interested in some glassware in the valley so we peaced out.

Still a sick day.. Gotta love living 5 minutes from the lifts.

I was born in Edmonton, Ab and my folks moved to Vancouver Island for work when I was five. I grew up Skeezin on Mt Washington and switched to snowboarding in jr high. When I graduated I got tired of smzll town life and my parents helped me move up here so I could attend Whistler U, aka School of ski bum life and I never looked back :)

Sometimes I consider moving to the city and "getting a real job/starting a real life" then I wake up and realize there is no other place I would rather be.

Ya I'm familiar with Roar! Not too bad a hike, we can do a couple laps of the upper bowl then maybe a south side lap to the truck if conditions permit! Perfect.

Jim you need to either edit it in photos and save it that way or get an app like photoshop express (which is free and has some nice features) and save it there. Otherwise it can potentially flip. It has to do with the way you hold the phone when you take the picture. I haven't figured it out yet. Maybe I'll play with it tonight if I have time.

Big mike, the picture of the exit of the glacier reminds me. I think it was two trips ago maybe 09, my brother and I where bombing the last hill before the flats to not walk out and two skiers were hanging to the side of the run. I was probably thinking something like these guys think we are so badass bombing this hill, they probably want to be just like me. Right after we pass them and hit the flats I see why they were stopped and realize they weren't thinking that. We hit an ice field and ate sh#t. I decided to lay down over catching an edge and musta slid 150 meters using my edge when I could. It could have been much worse, but I did catch an edge and twisted my knee pretty good. Good enough to end my trip with a cane, but that did help get me to the front of the lines in the airport, haha. I remember thinking those guys could of warned us, but it's always fun to watch a good wipeout. Good sh#t.

When I lived out west, I used to go skiing up on the Palisade Glacier by myself every spring.

My favorite time was to hike in around the middle of May and I'd stay for 2 weeks. Initially I camped in Sam Mack Meadow, but the steep climb out of the meadow every morning was so-o-o-o depressing that eventually I moved my high camp up to the glacial moraine. I have to admit, though, the final steep drop back into Sam Mack Meadow every afternoon was a blast!

The latest I ever skied was in July, but the sun cups were getting pretty big by then.

All of my back-country skiing was on alpine skis with 3-pin bindings and leather boots.

The steep descent to Sam Mack Meadow

High camp on the glacial moraine in May

Palisade Glacier in July

One day I fell while solo skiing down the U-Notch, and was injured so badly that I was never able to do any more serious rock-climbing again. I performed a self-rescue and hiked out the hospital in Big Pine. I was able to hike back up the glacier 2 weeks later (with my arms in slings) to retrieve all of my gear.

Sadly, we don't have very good snow or skiing out here in West Virginia.

Sounds like a you're going to have a great time wilbeer. How much time will you have? Have you been there before?

It's a long walk to Sam Mack Meadow, which is where most people camp. I just really hate that steep climb out of the meadow every morning, although that means you get an exhilarating descent back into the meadow at the end of the day. Plus in Sam mack Meadow you're in a hole and can't really see very much.

That's why I like to move my high camp up onto the moraine, above the lake at the foot of the Palisade Glacier. The view is spectacular!

It take a Herculean effort to get all the way up to the moraine with all of your gear. But to me, it's worth it.

Later in the summer you'll be skiing on corn in shorts and T-shirts!

I've been skiing on the Palisade Glacier as early as mid-April and as late as late July. For optimal conditions you've gotta watch the snowpack and pick the right conditions. But yeah - you can reliably ski corn every year.

I would say that the best time for corn is probably mid-to-late June, before the suncups appear and get too gnarly. Believe me, trying to ski frozen sun cups before the afternoon thaw is a thrash. (:

Norman Clyde's favorite area was Rock Creek - much easier access (trailhead at 10,000 feet) and lots of rolling terrain.

Palisades in April - full-on winter conditions

Palisades in June - sometimes not much different than winter

Thanks for the pics SLR! Looks like a fun zone. Not exactly sure what Bruce is on about.. There is usually plenty of corn around here in the late spring early summer. I'm usually too busy climbing by that point though..

Allright, I managed to get a few laps in yesterday, before we headed down to squish for Perry's do.

We got 15cms overnight.

I didn't get many pics, but this was last run.

I'm just hoping for lower winds tomorrow.

briham89, I'm wondering if you are snowed in a Kirkwood right now. 3 feet of new in the forecast there today, another 3 feet tomorrow. Should be amazing conditions when it clears up Christmas Eve..... then more snow in the forecast. And its staying COLD though all of these events.

Unfortunately I had pretty bad luck. I slept in my car last night....it consisted of sort of sleeping because my car kept shaking from the insane wind. I woke up this morning and it was snowing and blowing even harder than yesterday. They had guns going all over the place so I was hoping the wind calmed and stuff would open. 9am rolls around and no chairs are moving. I also check hwy 88 status and it is closing at 10am (I have to be home tonight). I wait around a little longer to try and get in at least one run, but nothing is moving and I reluctantly drive home :( after all that waiting I wish I could be there tomorrow and Monday, but unfortunately have to be done on LA for xmas....oh well

Looks like they only opened 7 today....god damn all that untouched snow on top is going to be deepppppp when they get it opened.

Too bad Briham!! Sometimes you gotta pay your dues to get the goods and sometimes it just doesn't work out. Too bad you couldn't wait it out. I love living at my resort, sleeping in my bed and being 5 minutes from the lift. To think we almost moved south this year! I grew up doing the drive every weekend, so I really appreciate the effort it takes.

Ya Slr!! People ask me all the time which one is better, Whistler or Blackcomb? I always reply "It's like comparing apples and oranges. You can't. They both have their merits and weaknesses. Truth be told tho I have a soft place in my heart for Blackcomb. The fall line is much better and there is more steep alpine terrain.

Living on the north side of town the parking makes it logistically easier, and I find the terrain opens quicker with better steep stuff in the sub alpine for those deep days.

Not to say I hate Whistler or anything like that! There are plenty of neat things to do over there and my favorite thing lately seems to be enjoying a bit of both worlds! The peak to peak has made that reality very much easier logistically speaking.. you can go from one mountain to the other in 15 minutes or so!

Good stuff Ryan. When I first started snowboarding, I would get every snowboarding video and get pumped. I was into all the freestyle boarders and was always bored when tom Burt section came on. The last few years I don't go into parks and now prefer to watch Burt over that tomato dude anyday. Burt is a pioneer and a lot of the freestyle guys have brought their skills to big mountain boarding. The evolution of boarding and skiing in the last 20 years is insane.

You guys get some schmooo up there today? I was lucky enough to have a free cat ski trip fall in my lap yesterday, it was hella fun & we got to ride the storm snow in the woods all day b4 it warmed up, I took some video I'll try throw together an edit this weekend. The coolest part was that our guide for the day was the legendary Don Schwartz! Him & the boys up at powder mountain have been working hard all summer cutting new runs & improving the base area, I hadn't been up with them in about 10years and couldn't believe how much work they have done. If anyone is looking to treat themselves real good with a day of bottomless pow & they are in the area I would highly recommend a day with these guys. Professional, fun, & deep for all levels. If you don't know who Don Schwartz is he spent a lot of time pioneering snowboarding BITD & was very prolific in bringing it to the big mountain with guys like Craig Kelly. These days he trains like a machine @ shows ppl good times on the planks. True OG & hella fun to ride with.

Woah what a weekend. Sh#t got cray in the koots, all sorts of drugs. The ones that make see sh#t.

Several days of pow shredding with out bindings but tons of hallucinogenics led to a very sore brain.

As far as the race went I came last on the clock but first in everyone hearts..

Posted a couple pics on my blog, if you don't wanna check em out who cares.

My leg wasn't functioning so good today, turns out I was a little too mangled on the sled ride back from the race, ended up falling off and getting run over. D'oh!

Nice Luke, good post on your blog & some awesome photos. I haven't seen Keith for a long time! I also notice on your blog that you "accepted" a climbing challenge with me??? I seem to remember YOU being the one doing the challenging & myself accepting :-) you may want to think about editing that so your readers don't get the wrong idea.

Anyways back to shredding here's an edit of some shaky footage from catboarding last week. We didn't set any records but it was a whole lotta type 1 fun with good buddies. We all work together & us getting a shred day together is virtually impossible with schedules as one of us always needs to be there so it was awesome it finally came together 2 years in the making.

Arrargh......return from back east to an apparent long dry spell in Ca. It started so good...since Dec 5 we got in 28 days of snow fun (resort ski, b/c ski, snowshoeing) in 5 states...now a stall. Headed up to Seattle end of Jan for the sailboat show thinking of hopping over to Whistler. We've never been.

I did catch a few runs back home at Holiday Valley in Ellicotville, NY. Very tame. No camera but here is a pic from my very first season of skiing last century, circa 1956 at Holiday Valley (with my bro). At that time they only had tow ropes and T-bars.

RIP yellow Voile shovel blade (2013-2013)

today i watched my yellow voile shovel blade, which i purchased only two weeks ago, plummet over 1000' vertical feet down into the bowels of The Funnel. i hoped maybe it would hang up on a grove of pinions about 20' down but, nay, it was not to be. i said a quick prayer (ie: dropped a flurry of f-bombs), floundered into the north woods, hit my knee on a tree trunk, did a one-hitter, and scurried back to the trailhead. snow was crap, views were great.

shine on you crazy yellow shovel blade.

First, that board is bordering on being a collectors item. And it looks like it's in great shape! Think twice.....

Second, I can't tell from the photo (and can't recall my history that well), but if it has the 3-hole pattern, it'll be a pain in the ass to split. Does it have inserts along the center of the board (where you'd cut it)? If so, that will create problems. It's not impossible, just challenging.

Good call BCD. To be honest I'm a complete noob when it comes to splitboarding. It does have a 3 hole setup and it also has extra metal in the nose and on the tail. Hey kid does the three hole setup just mean more drilling, or are the holes in the line of the cut?

Briham, take your pick, although with the Malolo u would have the same hole pattern issue, the Paavo is well ridden but super solid, both 62's. Actually I have a 170 option free plus up in the storage hole too, maybe a few others but their probably trashed. The 170 would be a jib board for Big Mike but if your under 200 it would be a charging machine! I'll try & dig it up but it's pretty much mint & could be a good option to split. If u aren't too attached to that AIR I'd be stoked to work something out, always wanted that deck when I was about 10 or 11, real bad. Never got a chance to ride one. The other thing I could offer u would be (conditions permitting), the best lap you've ever done at a resort if u ever make it up here :-)

Just went out on my split for the first time yesterday, was real fun & I'm psyched for more.

I am so so so wanting to jump off this cornice on Fawn Ridge, but the birthdate on my driver's license says "No, don't be silly". Oh to just turn back that darn clock for just a day.

Today the clouds were rolling in and snow was starting pretty briskly but it's not expected to be a big dump.

Time to dig this thread up from oblivion! So it's been a long summer, and i spent a lot of time dreaming about what riding would be like.

I found out today.

Sandra's been super nervous about me going up again, because she thinks i'm gonna kill myself. She didn't want me to ride that board either. (It's the one i hurt myself on.)

I don't buy into any of that crap, and i was gonna get right back on the horse that bucked me. It worked out pretty good. Felt really wierd because my left foot is still severely lacking in feeling, and i was pretty aprehensive at first, but by the second run things felt a bit more normal.

I certainly don't have the strength or endurance i used to have. The back felt ok. A little weird when i really tweaked a turn. Riding is gonna be super good for me. I just have to remember there's no toprope on the hill!!

That's on the hill. It's a really good day if snow totals in the valley match the mountain totals!!

It's still a bit boney up here!

A lovely morning on the darkside

I'm feeling a lot better about riding today. I'm learning to use my left heel which has feeling again, as an indicator where my front foot is and it feels alot more natural. Pow feels good too because my front foot feels permanently floaty and thats what pow feels like. ;)

I got three laps in today before i hit the lodge for a break.

I got up the hill a couple days ago with Sandra's dad, Mike.

Here he is by the Peak to Peak chair.

It was -17c that day, but Mike thought it was warm..

We did a lap on green chair and then i took these shots at the top.

Mike was having a blast. He said this was "as good as it gets in Ontario!"

After another run on Whistler we headed over to Blackcomb for a few there.

I'm starting to feel way better on my board now. This was my third day, and i felt pretty comfortable. My back seems to be playing nice too at the moment.

Hope you all are ripping some turns out there!!

Get used to it.

Yep, 'fraid so. The bitch is that at my age it's not like my skill increases every year, but certainly my caution does. The last few years I've had to really take stock every time I went to buy a new bike or new skis…."at my age is this really a wise investment?" The problem is you get to a certain age where you can finally afford the equipment that could have made a huge difference when I was younger.
OK enough, boo hoo, I'm getting old crap.

No Pwl activity yesterday bruce. No activity at all actually. The Caa forecaster blog predicted that. He said it might take a couple days for the big slabs to form up.

Chocolate bowl looked like it went natural along most of avalanche alley a couple days ago.

We played it super safe yesterday, staying on the super low angle ridge and playing in the meadows. Plenty of other people being stupid though. They busted the gauntlet (the chute on the left of my brandywine bowl pic), and boatloads of turbo couch owners could be seen drinking beer directly below avalanche slopes. All the coq boys are up this weekend too, since the coq is closed, and they aren't known for their snow safety skills.

Thank god it's low vis today. Hopefully that will keep some people outta trouble..

Crazy avalanche at Crystal eh? Thanks for posting that kunlun shan.

you are right Reilly, it's highly unusual for us to have that kind of action so early. We had a decent start and then a big break which gave the whole coast a pretty crappy persistent weak layer. Then a couple more sh!tty layers on top of that followed by a ton of snow. That was the result.

My buddy Corey has been bugging me to get out Sled Skiing. We got some new snow last week and then it cleared up, so we seized the opportunity.

Pemberton Ski Hill

Corey at the first peak.

When you go sled skiing with just a partner, you need two sleds. One gets left at the bottom of your line, then you double up on the other.

Then after your run, you gotta start the process all over again and take both sleds down. If you're good on the sled, this part is pretty fun too.

First peak downline. I just rode the chute (sledded) on the middle right of the image.

Back at the top we did another stellar run.

Ipsoot Glacier

Corey gets a deep slash in the light before dropping into the chute.

Corey dropping in to another horrible commute back to the bottom so we can snowboard again... lol

Corey getting some

Money Shot!!

Sledding is so rad. You can really make use of the terrain! Up/down, flat, doesn't matter. It's all fun.

After a little lunch we dropped in again.

Corey riding the Dogleg Chute look for the little dot on the face just below the left peak.

Dropping in to yet another epic downline

So much fun!!

The scenery is simply breathtaking

This downline was pretty much the end of the day, but we stopped at the cabin so i could rest my aching back.

Corey rooping the hip in front of Mt Currie

The view from the cabin

The best thing about sleds is the ablity to use terrain that would be absolutely useless to any other gravity based snowsport.

The Cabin and my 2005 Skidoo Summit "The Blue Dragon" She has 17,000km on her. I just keep fixing her up and she treats me nice!

+1 Bruce. Luckily the average person will never need to hire a "pro skier".

I think another reason buddy lawn darts so bad in the vid is because he probably hits terminal velocity and has no momentum so he just turns into a falling leaf.

Tons of speed and too much back lean produced this--it DID make the Bozeman news that evening with the Best of Pond Skim '14

Mike there has been no snow where I live since early may as the peaks only get to about 7000ft but the Big Horns are two hours away in why and the beartooths are about 5 hours away in mt. Both ranges have got great summer snow with beartooth pass offering roadside access at about 11,000ft. When the tallest peak in the state is a stones throw away at 12,799. Might be trying to get my 11th straight month in August if things work out.

Nature, doooooood. Start at or near the south shore (where ever is mellow) and get your hop up dialed. Then move on to steeper waves. You can even practice at home on the floor, as long as you know if you are goofy or regular. I kind of hesitate to mention this, but might want to consider a series of exercises focused on surfing to help you along. Some of these are geared specifically towards the hop up and I know they work (quicken up the movement). Check ito out if interested (I get no money from this, I just think it helps loads).

Hate to say it ladies and gentlemen, but after 23 years of snowboarding and 19 years of backcountry splitboarding.... (pause for effect)

I think I'm going to learn how to ski.

Wait. Now just wait a goddam minute. Look, I love the way a snowboard feels on those epic powder days, but after a couple of seasons skinning around the local mountains I think that skis are the way to go. Plus, learning new stuff is cool. I feel like a traitor...a fraud for betraying the winter discipline that I've loved and defended with fervor for so long but the truth is staring me in the face. Getting around my current local mountain range will be a lot less painful on skis. I hope my splitboarding bretheren will understand this and support me in my future endeavors. However, I'm still not selling off my old Prior just in case I need to whip it out on a nice bluebird day.

Snow sliding's on hold for a few hours in West Yellowstone with the temp at -20f and the snow making that special crunch when walked or skied on. Huge XC festival with scads of skiers in town, demos, first races of the season, and granola flying everywhere!

Badger Pass representin'

Sunday was clear weather and great snow. Monday was a minor blizzard, barely snow but trying to be rain. Tuesday started with full-on rain (should have put garbage bags over our jackets) and it turned the deep fresh powder into wet cement. Weather cleared by afternoon and was great conditions in groomed sections and very interesting for me to probe my tail balancing abilities off the groomed areas.

Ekat- That sounds like littering? I hope you picked up all of your polyethylene shavings from the parking lot before they scattered in the wind.... Maybe you had a vaccum with you to collect the hydrocarbon waste? Bragging about littering doesn't seem like something an ex park ranger would do. I'm SHOCKED!

The early season skiing in the Tahoe Sierra is the best it's been in many years. All that great powder got a 2 foot load of Sierra Cement dumped on it Monday followed by a light rain up to 7,000+ ft. Now we looking forward to a cold front that will dump 1 to 2 feet up on the summit starting early tomorrow morning with snow levels down to 2500 ft. We'll be back in the powder tomorrow through Christmas day and the weekend, I couldn't be happier!!!

Ekat- Thanks for the concern. YAY! The inflammation is going down and I'll probably be able to get around without a cane in a few more days. I'm not really worried about your moral compass. It's the potentially toxic trash that you feel you have liscence to leave in a parking lot that I think is pretty "F" ed. Especially for an ex park Ranger. That's some messed up STUFF!

From tree hugger.com
Guest bloggers Andrea Donsky and Randy Boyer are co-founders of NaturallySavvy.com.

We're in the thick of ski and snowboard season, and if you've been hitting the slopes a lot, you've probably had to wax your skis or board at least once. But have you thought about the hazards of the chemicals in your ski wax?

Many high-performance ski waxes used by the pros contain high amounts of perfluorochemicals, or PFCs, and cheaper products used by avid recreational skiers often contain PFCs in lower concentrations. These are the chemicals used in non-stick cookware that have been linked to a number of health issues. While more research is needed, when it comes to our friends who ski a lot, we prefer to take the "better safe than sorry" approach to chemical risk. The Bad News
PFCs have understandably come under fire for being a potentially serious health concern. One study showed PFCs altered the liver and spleen of rabbits, as well as other less severe changes in the lung and kidney, and found that the PFC particles were retained in vital organs.

Another study involving pregnant rats and mice found PFCs were toxic to the mother, and that the offspring showed developmental problems, including birth defects such as heart defects and swelling of the skin.

But you knew this right? You've been doing it for 48 years?

YAY!!!! YAY!!! XOXO!

It should be noted that in 2006 the EPA concluded that more research is needed before any conclusions can be made about the risks of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a specific type of PFC. However, the EPA Web page on PFOA also states that the chemical "is very persistent in the environment" and "remains in people for a very long time."

PFC Hits Your Blood
Two studies out of Sweden have shown that ski technicians are at risk of highly elevated PFC levels in their blood, and that is cause for concern.

The first study tested perfluorocarboxylate (PFCA) blood levels in eight ski wax technicians before, during, and after the 2007/2008 ski season, and researchers found that the median blood level for PFOA was almost 45 times that of the general population (112 ng/mL compared to 2.5 ng/mL). What's more, it appears that there is a correlation between the levels of perfluorocarboxylates in the blood and the number of years working as a ski wax technician.

YAY! I just dumped toxic garbage in a parking lot! HA! XOXOXO!

Glad you are so concerned with environmental impact, F. Hope you heal up soon!

If you sincerely want to do something about fluoro, please go to all the stores near where you live and ask them to stop selling microwave popcorn.
It has a much greater effect on the planet than skiers ;-)

http://www.dominatorwax.com/sites/default/files/dominator/THE-ENVIRONMENTAL-IMPACT-OF-WAXING.pdf

Most cheap *$$ recreational skiers like me use hydrocarbon wax. Driving to the mountains burning fossil fuel has a more negative
impact than the wax I use.

That's kind of scary. Thankfully for me, I don't eat microwave popcorn. Or wax my skis that often. Winky. As consumers, we all create the demand for products that may or may not be harmful to the cute little bunnies, or ourselves. Something to be aware of when choosing how to spend your money, eh? Or when choosing where to scrape your wax off.

Where would be the best place to start when demanding an end to the sale of microwave popcorn? Local retailers, or go to Orville Redenbachers house and bang on the door? Maybe a FaceSpray campaign would create some awareness globally of the dangers of microwave popcorn? Burchy - how am I doing here? 3.5/10?

My skins.

The monsoon cometh around here. 65 mph avg winds, gusts to 112 on Sunburst.
Rain to 2000 feet. (That's a wee bit over 600 meters for you Canuckistanis.)
Wet skins down low traveling into pow up high, (4 feet in the last few days) means an extra sticky 10 lbs of snow on the skins. Didnt notice any extra friction on the schuss down, just plenty of teeth grinding pain in the knee still. Skiing 30" of glop is work, with or without wax. Looks like a gnarly storm cycle settling in, time to go tinker around until it blows itself out.

Man, what a snow year! Unfortunately I f*#ked my knee/ankle a week ago as my bindings do not release and I had an edge that was caught and I became mankled. Been on the tele stuff for about 15+ years and boarded about 10 before that. I only boarded on area. Parallel turns do not have the feel that aligns with my stokey lobe so no AT or alpine for me.
Anyone here do any splittin'? I will get a board for the area but I am not so into those zones so much anymore and would like to tour. I hear the tech has come along hella and I need something in the winter to compliment my nordic gig.

Awesome Rick A! Tahoe looks rad. I gotta get down there.

I've had lots of sick days this year. So many i'm having trouble finding time to report on them!

Erin and I had a couple of amazing days at Red. On the first day we hooked up with her ski patrol pal Zoe who showed us tons of goods!!

We found a few turns of our own before that..

Then the next day we hooked up with my buddy Danger Dave and he gave us the tour!

Old mine sorting facilities on Red Mountain.

We had stashed a car off the highway below Kirkup to start the day so we could enjoy an epic car lap. Unfortunately due to our late start, and Dave's tour, Erin decided not to join Dave and I to do this lap so we would be assured of making the 4:30 Kootenay Ferry outside of Nelson.

Dave hiking Kirkup

This sign line marks the end Red Mountain's tenure.

HOLY SH#T!!!!!!!!!

Got stuck in Tahoe Sunday night when 50, 88, and 80 closed. And boy I'm glad I did! Took a sick day on Monday.

Mott canyon at Heavenly was closed for two days during the storm, and when it opened....the snow that fell at the end of the storm with COLD temps, along with the COLD east wind, made for the lightest snow I've ever skied in Tahoe. Waist deep blower pow down a steep ass run. Can't ask for much more. I hate to say a resort run is one of my top three all time runs, but holy sh#t that was one of the best runs of my life. I was nearly choking on pow, and my face was covered at the bottom, because every turn was a blower face shot!!!!!!

Shredding in Panorama. Great mountain, though we haven't had the good powder dumps, the snow has been good and warm enough not to be an ice-skating outing. Our first day we did get some freshies, but it was on top of a layer of ice, so kinda worthless, but since then it's been pretty good and the under layer has softened. Been cool riding with my bro, it's been a couple years. Heli high has some good steep trees and have found some good powder in there. With mostly nice groomed conditions we have been hitting the park a lot. Funny because we grew up always in there, then evolved into the whole mountain is a park attitude and probably been close to a decade since I've hit a table. I must say, it's been super fun charging the tables and obstacles. I'm pretty sure Jeremy and I are bringing straight airs back! 1080s? Pfft. Straight mute is way cooler.

Pretty dry at Mammoth so far, 13". They have been making snow day and night to get enough runs open for the LA hordes tomorrow. Lifts are starting an hour early. Will not find me there!

Today was.....acceptable by all standards, eh Big Mike?

I'd say!! It was a nipple deep opening over on the dark side!!

I got stuck several times when i put in first lines!! Even straightlining didn't help!! It was ridiculous!

Next year Mike! But I have been talking sh#t about Squamish this summer. Hope you are doing good brother.

You better!! We need to send the Chief!! I'm doing well, keeping busy and the snow is piling up!! How are you guys?

Then, going climbing at Red Rock and Cochise Stonghold. Ha!

Jelly!!! I didn't get nearly enough climbing in this season! I still want to come visit you guys in Minden buddy, but i have a huge debt to take care of before i can make more travel plans!

Christoph- Awesome! The last time i was in Valdez ABA dropped me straight into a class 3 slide on Python! I need a rebate trip!!

Wowsers Jon! 13" isn't much at all!! I hope you guys get some of this fantastic weather we've been enjoying!!

Rain in the Sierras today. Only the kiddie lifts at Squaw Valley are open. Three runs open at Alpine Meadows, that is, three runs if you exaggerate. I'm thinking of moving...... depressing....

Mike, stop it, please. It's depressing.

You know what's really depressing?? I put my back out after those first couple days and i haven't been able to ride all this glorious snow since then!!

Come north buddy!

GF, that looks like typical early season!!

We have some super dense base snow as of the last few days. Definitely not fun skiing, but it will make for a good base for the rest of the year. Hopefully the snow coming in mid week will be a lot colder.

I hope your back heals up quick Mike!

Christoph- did you bump into Pete when you were there?

Cold and fluffy yesterday. Partner bailed. Dog persevered for the 3k descent. She's still learning to stay off the skis when you are breaking trail through 16" of pow and facets, but she staightlines her run like Nobis in the 90s.

Cornices got touchy for a few days.

We had a reactive layer here too.
A reactive layer of pow that seemed to get all over your face every other turn....

I haven't shredded for ever though because I have a massive gaping wound in the bottom of my toe!! Doh!

I'm attempting to stay off it as much as possible to let it heal but i'm getting super jelly!!

Horstman Glacier is looking pretty fat still for April 22nd!

I went for a little walk and found a memorial for Sarah Burke

The snow was super soft and not too heavy, a nice consistency really. It was a sweet lap through some very familiar terrain. Gotta love visiting these old haunts!
