Been thinking about this again, and the fact that only weeks ago the Santa Clara flood took everything of his makes it yet more poignant and sad.
That dike was a foolish idea to begin with and I hope the victims are compensated.

Little more info here:

A 49-year-old Santa Clara man died Friday afternoon from injuries sustained in a 40-foot fall along the Northeast Buttress route, which is below Angels Landing.
ZION NATIONAL PARK — A 49-year-old Santa Clara man died Friday afternoon from injuries sustained in a 40-foot fall along the Northeast Buttress route, which is below Angels Landing.
Park officials identified the man as Lyle Dale Hurd III. According to national park officials, Hurd was hiking with three other men when he fell. The accident is under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the National Park Service.
Hurd's hiking partner witnessed the fall and called for emergency assistance. Twenty members of the Zion Search and Rescue Team assisted with the initial response and to recover Hurd's body once it was determined he had not survived the fall.
Hurd's death was the second fatal accident in the park during 2012 and the seventh climbing fatality since 1983.

A climber fell and died Friday in Zion National Park.
Lyle Dale Hurd III, 49, of Santa Clara, died at scene.
According to a press release from the National Park Service, Hurd was among four people climbing the Northeast Buttress route, a climbing route below Angels Landing.
Hurd and a partner were following the other pair up the route. Hurd fell more than 40 feet onto a ledge, pulling his top piece of protection out, the Park Service reported. His partner called 911 and provided medical care to Hurd.
Search and rescue personnel worked through the night to remove the body and investigate the fall.

Very sad news. Wishing strength for greiving friends and relatives.
Thanks Crimp for the first details. Still seems too soon to start analyzing.
Toker, where are you getting your info from? You seem to be plugged into some other source. How did you know he was affected by the recent flooding? Obviously your local, and so more directly connected, but anything you can share?

Some places it is customary to characterize climbers as hikers. I know in Prescott this was often done to reduce the potential for sensationalizing the accident. It may not be totally honest but it is often seen as a favor to the climbing community.
