Seems that most NFL and NBA starts are tat-ed to the hilt so it must make you a better athlete. Seems like soccer stars must not be that great of athletes as they are rather tatoo free. But anyway I am thinking real hard that I need to head to the parlor so that I can climb a number grade or two harder.

I'm pretty sure Alex Honnold or Adam Ondra don't have tattoos.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sharma had a namaste tattoo on his ass-cheek.

Definetly!!! A very positive coorelation....the more tatoos a person has the less employable they are which means more time to climb....practice makes perfect!

Actually, look at the number of football/soccer players in Europe (and elsewhere) with tattoos, loads of them, and like the NFL, MBL, NBA and others, they make more money in a week that I will in a lifetime.

Hmmm, maybe if I got a tattoo....

... I could lead 5.13. Even free solo 5.14. Tattoie away.

Don't bother with the tats. Just climb shirtless and wear a beanie. And scream really loudly when you climb. That'll bump you up several grades, at least in your own mind.

Yes, for sure. Just like rice rockets are faster when they have a few hundred stickers on them. If Ondra, Sharma, or Honnold had a tattoo we would see the next level of climbing. 4 3000ft big walls in half a day solo, 5.17, v18 it is all possible, with the right tattoo.

Don't know if a tat would make one climb better, but it is a good indicator of the kind of twisted mind that is required to enjoy the suffering that comes from shoving a perfectly good hand into a grainy crack and then yarding on it.

Another way for mindless sheep to waste their $$$$$$

Buy tats, cigs, weed, booze, and drive a gas guzzling monster truck

then blame the economy for your problems.

gee! how "alternative"

alternative to what?

throw in some hockey puck earings

a stand-up paddle board

a cross fit bumper sticker

a tough mudder T-shirt

and your a bad-as rebel

Now,

ok - serious answer. I was in ft collins of all places, a decade ago with a fresh tat and electric purple hair, I'm in the local nepalese import shop...owner wants to talk to me about tats and hair color. we have this long, interesting conversation about the helix of life and the 4 eras humankind goes through... First they are too busy to make art, then they start drawing on the walls, then they make art for art's sake (movies, music, sculpture) then the last phase is characterized by the humans themselves being the canvass... he really was positive the latest trend in sleeves, piercings, etc is exactly this phenomena *again*...
Then we reset and are too busy to make art for a while...according to him this has been going on for eons and eons, most of us just aren't aware of the pattern since we see such a small part of it...

what about all those who performed at high levels before tatoos became popular and never had one?

it's really a stupid hypothesis on your part

the corollary is: what about all those who have tons of tatoos and don't even perform?

if you want to make it more interesting what about the interaction of EPO and tatoos

or say, heroin and tatoos

Ok, I have to come clean.

First off, no it didn't help me be a better climber.

Back a couple(ish) decades, when I was 17, Josh had this great idea, "let's go get tattoos!", he then proceeded to tell me about a guy who could do it really cheap. Plus he wasn't real concerned with checking IDs. So off we went to get our first ink. Greg was a sketchy ex-con with a body full of poorly done tattoos, but "MICHELLE" in giant Gothic letters across his neck really stood out amongst the rest. His "parlor" err trailer was even sketchier. Me being young and dumb and having a new subscription to Rock and Ice thought the little heal hook dude would be AWESOME on my shoulder. Anyway he sawed away on both of us and away we went happy as clams with our own sketchy half-assed tatoos.

Josh wanted to go back a few weeks later to get, Animal (from the muppets) playing drums. I said I'd pass on getting one, but would gladly tag along just to hear Greg's amusing hard time anecdotes. Greg answers the door, Josh looks at him and says, "Looks like you an Michelle broke up." I laughed, Greg didn't. Greg had a new black bar across his neck.

Ever see what a tat looks like on a 60 year old man (or - woman)? I mean the one they had done when they were 20-something.

My namesake grandfather relayed that his tattoo was about the worst decision he'd ever made (and he'd made his share, too).

I'm sure glad I paid him some mind on that. Now, if I could only avoid repeating some of his other poor choices...

PMB, good stuff, and it is reasonable to think on, fun, too. Which is likely half the attraction or so to the tattoo, or piercing, what-have-you, ear-lobe stretching, elongated necks achieved with stacks of rings, bells on the toes and ribbons in your nose.

I found this video. IT IS CLIMBING CONTENT. The tattooal is reversed, however. The white chalk is the ink, the rock is the surface, and the humand fingers apply it.

It's a symbiotic (?) and age-old custom.

Turn the question around for another thread topic: Do chalk marks make a boulder better?

Excuse me if Midnight Lightning applies. I like that tattoo as well as I like Michelle's lowered lip. It's none of my business if I can't see it, though. For what it's worth, it rocks.

First time in my life i'm going to a rock gym with some regularity. Bend Rock Gym. Seems the tatooless are now the minority amongst the plastic hold pullers. Still don't get it. I'm beginning to sound like the old cowboy who said, "I've been around a long time and seen a lot of change and I was against every single one of them." And no, I don't think tattoos make for a better climber. The lad who won last week's Bend Rock Gym competition was sans tatts so far as exposed flesh revealed.
