Some more scans that I did today.
Can anyone verify if this is Wino Tower? Could be the summit I suppose. I remember Warren mentioning that Christian Brothers was his best sponsor of the climb. I flipped the picture horizontally as I realized the labels were mirrored.

P.S. It turns out that Park Rat is correct and that is not Admiral Batso but Admiral Basil.

Admiral Batso?

Well yes and no.

As we all know this history thing is like dominos and once they kick off it is impossible to stop them. The connections are endless.

The shot of Harding as the Admiral is on the yacht Bimi, which belonged to Basil who was the father of Beryl who was Hardings squeeze at the time and in reality for quite some time. Now Basil is the great grandson of Nathaniel Bowditch, rightly so considered the father of navigation. I would imagine this photo is taken during the Master Mariner Race on SF Bay. That is Basil's hat and he was the only person I have ever knew that could out-consume Harding when it came to alcohol.

For a little more history, here is a little write up I did a while back on the boat, the people and the times. Ah, thems was good days!

Park Rat is indeed correct. Good eye. Sorry about the confusion. Mary Lou Long has confirmed that the picture is of Admiral Basil Beryl Knauth's father. It is RUMORED that Basil once fired a canon at the Coast Guard. Can anyone confirm this? Guido? BooDawg? Anyone else? Basil was also said to be one of the few people that could drink Warren under the table.
Here is a picture of the real Batso and Beryl that was used in his book Downward Bound.

FOUND IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That picture of Warren leaning away from his pin was taken by Galen Rowell on the FA of Kalona Rock in Hetch Hetchy. The pic is plate 65 in the 1972 AAJ and is captioned" Warren Harding on a ceiling on the North Face of Kalona Rock."

The route was done Memorial Day weekend in 1971 by Harding and Rowell and they rated it V, F9, A3. 1,800 feet, 16 pitches with more than 50% of them free.

I KNEW I had seen that image before!!!

Looks like the Bat's dancing on the Lost Arrow, IMO. See the direction of the light/shadow? Combined with the vague shape of the North Rimmage on the "skyline" and the "Village" below. Possibly the LA Direct. It's only one of many possible locations. Check the height in relation to the rim, too. A real puzzle. Cool. The charisma of WH...

Check the "sinister" hammer, too. It doesn't look like a Chouinard, so that might be a clue. I certainly don't remember seeing Warren's hammers, so someone older than I will have to suss it out. :)

Again, Ken, a blast of past.

TY. Big-time.

edit--I looked at the hammer with a big lens--very poss. a Chouinard, but Steve's the hammer thread man.

I don't think he is free climbing - his right foot appears to be in an aider, and you can see the shadow of the aider as well. And a dark left aider that his left foot is not in at the moment.
As Brian said, it might be near the top of Lost Arrow Spire.
If you belayed halfway up the last pitch in the topo, you might get this view.
The background does line up fairly well with the Silver Platter, judging from a summit shot I have.

[Edit:]vvvv see klaus' definite ID below - this agrees with the lower angle to the background.

From wiki on HARDING

1968 West Face or Direct Route (NCCS VI F8 A3), Lost Arrow Spire, Yosemite, CA, with Pat Callis.

This fits the time line. This climb was just before Warren was it by the pickup. The last time he was totally physically fit, after the accident, he was never completely out of pain when he climbed.

I wrote thread on lost arrow camp out. Which may or may not have happened after this climb was completed. Chuckle

I flipped this photo - now it should be clear that it's a view down from Boot Flake, with modern era ropes. Not sure how this one fits in.

This one looks like one of the pitches that is shared with Wall of Early Morning Light and Mescalito.

That does look better Clint and familiar too. Thanks. Both slides were mixed in with WEML slides. Quite a few of the slides are duplicates and I am having a hard time orientating some of them. Identifying others has been difficult too. I have been posting these without much information hoping for help from some of you.

If Peter cannot tackle this job, I will certainly volunteer. I may not have as sophisticated software as he has but I have enough to get the job done.
I have a slide scanner and software to improve the light sources of the pictures.

Please let me know if you want me to work on any of your pictures.

Hi Park Rat. How are you? Thank you for your offer. I am using a pretty good scanner. It is a Nikon Super Coolscan 8000. The original tif scans are 100+ MB each. I don't think they need rescanning. Many of them are dark and I have lightened some of them up a bit after copying them and resizing as web file jpegs. They look better on my computer and seem darker once they are downloaded to the forum. It would be nice to re-post them in a proper thread after they have been cleaned up.

I've seen this effect before. I suspect this pic, with grossed-out contrast and wacked-out color, is a poorly done dupe, of a poorly done dupe, of a poorly done dupe, etc. Each time you lose more of the original. This one's so far gone you can never regain very much. Trick is to locate more copies of the exact same slide, and sort through them looking for the one closest to the original, which will have more detail. At least, I hope that's not an original......

Fantastic pictures, by the way! Thanks.

Ken...thanks again. just saw my wife's post...she's at work...I think? I had the wonderful experience of driving to Yosemite with Warren in 1970. We came up from Merced and the one thing I remember distinctly about that drive occurred just after entering the park... we were going so fast that the corvette was drifting slightly on the sharp turns. Exciting for me because of that rock wall on my side...sometimes only inches away....I kept picturing the fiberglass body splintering on impact. Of course Warren was a great driver and knew every corner ... on that section especially. I always wondered if he was testing me. If he was, I think I passed the test...I never said much about it and it was very exciting...but not scary, as I trusted him.

Ken -

When we finished the Nose FA I gave Warren duplicates of the slides I had taken. You also have scans of most of them for the YCA, and I had asked that they not be distributed indiscriminately as they do have a certain intrinsic value.

Warren was not carrying a camera on that effort, though I did hand him mine to take a quick shot of me once in a great while.

Several of my photos show up in the above series. Also, I rather think that the one of the Dolt Cart may have been Ellen Searby's, and possibly one or two others.

I still have my originals, of course.

Wayne

It appears as though Wayne Merry's request that indiscriminate posting of these valuable shots has been honored by Chickenskinner, who is a worthy keeper of the damned keys to the past.

The Yosemite Climbing Association maintains an archive of photos. There are currently only four galleries in the photo archive: Greg Epperson, Bill Dolt, Chris Falkenstein, and Ansel Adams.

http://www.yosemiteclimbing.org/photography/

What do you want to bet that Ken's time is so limited and expenses are so great that more cannot be done without help, both physical and financial.

Perhaps someone would like to donate some time (I will offer some time, Ken, and hope to get you the photos from Facelift I've been promising--it's a long story) in the coming months, but my coffers are a trifle dusty.

Some others may consider sending a few bucks to the YCA, if you haven't, and if you'd like to join, I urge you to do so.
