Sitting in the living room surfing ST in semi darkness when the outside lights suddenly came on behind me. Looked out the window to see a huge coyote sauntering through the yard below me. Not one of them scrawny little J-Tree things, but the real deal.
We live in West Seattle, surrounded by green space, including a mile-long park across the street. We've often heard the coyotes, and one of them got our cat shortly after we moved in last fall (there was an eyewitness to that event), but I hadn't seen any of them until now.
Great big healthy-looking beast.

This weekend I spent a fair amount of time watching two baby deer play in our yard, with occasional appearances by mommy. Got some pics and vids.

I lived on the east side of lake washington for a time.... Yeah we have lots of "urban wildlife" I have even seen a little bobcat go bounding up the street.

You guys need to get out of the city.
Now Eric, play nice. We'd just got back into the city a couple of hours before. Didn't see any thing bigger than a falcon when we were out in the mountains, so seeing the coyote was a treat.

Just for reference, we don't live in some far-flung suburb, that has nothing but wilderness between the back door and the mountains. West Seattle is the oldest settled part of the city, and surrounded by close to 4 million people. However, there is a strip of wild land between our place and the Duwamish River, and our house itself is kind of isolated, with green space on three sides. But to get to any kind of real wild country, those coyotes would have to travel twenty miles.
They, like us, are urban folk.

It's an odd thing, that. The crow has as much right to the kingbirds as the kingbirds have to whatever they eat. But there is an instinct to protect, isn't there? I loved my cat. She was part of the family. Had I been there, and armed, when the coyote attacked her I probably would have done whatever I could to protect her. But I hold no ill will toward the coyote.

I don't know about those coyotes. I find it easier to PRAY in nature, which feels more like a church to me. But heck, since they're in it all the time I guess it might feel special and religious to come to a city?
Sorry for PREYing on you Ron, but khanom started it on this thread, I had to get my snappy comment in there too! Especially since I haven't climbed outside in at least a month now.

No coyotes in the yard lately. Maybe this is why:
It hopped a six-foot fence right next to the Kite Office to get into the yard. Then it took its time walking around.
I've been wondering why I haven't been seeing coyote signs ( piles of poo or chewed irrigation lines )

We need some coy wolves out here in the west.
The beast I reported in the opening post was big enough that we don't need any coy wolves here. I've never seen a coyote that size.
Also kind of weird to read this old thread (and quite a few others) with pieces missing. Khanom and Ron Anderson in this case.

I hope it's the vice versa. Bobcats don't chew into irrigation lines like coyotes do, and they cover their sh#t.
I haven't been hearing the once-usual nighttime cacophony of coyote yips for a while, now that I think about it.

Was thinking the same thing as DMT.
The adult eastern coyotes I've seen appear to be within a fairly limited size range. If Ghost's visitor was notably larger, maybe a hybrid.
I've yet to read anything that confirms it, but I've found more bobcat sign around my chunk of coastal Maine in the last 2-3 years; I think they are thriving here, along with the raptors.

I used to see a coyote on Bernal Hill in San Francisco when I was walking my dog up there at night. It's a hill completely surrounded by a dense urban city and, beyond that, water.
I also saw one in the Presidio-- presumably it crossed the Golden Gate Bridge (no doubt shirking the requirement to pay a toll) to get there! Probably great hunting after it made it over.

I have no idea whether this is true, but a co-worker told me about this after I mentioned the coyotes I've been seeing lately in Golden Gate Park. Supposedly this is how coyotes came to San Francisco, after dying out over previous decades.
Brings up memories of Rokjox and his threats to re-introduce wolves to "Kali".

Yes, coyotes did come over the Golden Gate Bridge, but not on their own four legs. They were brought in from northern Mendocino County by a trapper.
These coyote releases occurred in and around 2002. They didn’t occur just once, they occurred several times, and at least 6 coyotes were involved — probably more. The fellow who brought them into the Presidio — that is where they were left — felt that they had a good chance of survival because of all the rodents and feral cats in the city — he wanted the coyotes to thrive.
Why did he bring them in? He did so out of retribution for the 1998 ban on leg-hold traps which he had fought against! Interesting twist! He wanted these coyotes to be a problem for the residents. “Darn those liberal voters in San Francisco who voted against leg-hold traps.” SF was on the route he took to visit relatives further south. It is on his way to visit the relatives that he transported and dropped the coyotes at the Presidio.

News anchor Jeff Gianola got a pic of a mama bobcat and three kittens in his fron driveway in the Forest heights section of Portland.
But that’s not surprising. forest park, though in city limits, also has bear and cougars.

I don't know about American raccoons, but when I lived in North Vancouver, BC, they pooped vast quantities in my back yard.
There was a stream running through our backyard and it was a total raccoon highway.

you guys should look at this site for amazing photos of the SF coyotes-this morning one loomed up out of the fog not 20 feet away-and like Ghost said many years ago it aint like a J Tree, but big and healthy with a beautiful coat.
Kunlun Shan that mountain was tranquilized 100 feet from my door-so it race by into the neighboring complex whilst i walked my dogs.

Over the last 20 years in JT I have had coyotes chew off only two weepers. Use about 100 weepers all told.

It's amazing how loud raccoons are when having sex. They once fell into my neighbors mostly empty pool in the middle of it and never even slowed down.
We have a raccoon family that is in our yard most nights. They catch worms and wash them off in my bird bath. Last spring three of the young ones were fighting in the back yard and my older cat (all 18 pounds of him) got tired of it and charged them. You should have seen them run! Mostly though the cats and the coons just tolerate and ignore each other.
