I just found out my good friend's car has been parked near Mt. Dana / Cocaine Chute for two weeks. I spoke with the Mono County Sheriff and apparently:

1. He probably was alone.
2. There was a note saying he was doing Cocaine Chute.
3. The note was dated April "18th or 19th -- the Thursday" according to the Sheriff. (Thursday is the 19th).

I don't have much other information and am trying to type this message out as soon as I can to hopefully get ANY help/information from the community.

He is an experienced mountaineer but has limited ski mountaineering experience.

Edit: Deputy Degeorge (sp?) at Mono County Sheriff's Department (760-932-7549 and leave a message with the dispatcher) is the official in charge.

"...he has limited ski mountaneering experience."

How good of a steeps skier is he? CC isn't the place to be learning how to negotiate chutes/jump turns!

Regardless, praying and hoping for the best!!

Yes, it's surprising that no one realized he might be missing sooner, but all of us (his friends) are just finding this out as of late last night or early this morning.

His family is out of the state or country. He lives with a friend in Tahoe who is also out of the country at the moment. His occupation (academic research) allows him to work remotely/sporadically and without regular interaction with people, so he usually just works in Tahoe and travels/climbs when he feels like it.

I don't know how good of a skier he is.

Why even post about it online? Because if anyone saw him in the area or saw any evidence of him in the area between April 18-20, someone on this board knows that person or knows someone who knows that person. Wouldn't you post if your friend was missing?

Mono County SAR and/or other SAR operations were launched today and additional teams will be dispatched in the morning, from what I understand.

You can read additional details at the link below (where another friend posted). There are also photos of him there, in the very unlikely case he decided to blow off his plans and go climb/hike somewhere else without telling anyone...

Name: Boris Avdeev (from the linked thread above).

The timing doesn't sound too hopeful.
One possibility is that his car wouldn't start so he abandoned it and got a ride out with other people,
but it would seem unlikely it would be left there for long,
especially if he was planning to go to Colorado.
[Seems likely he would have removed or revised the note he left, also.]

Yeah - I'm hoping that something like that happened, that he just went on a big huge adventure stupidly without telling anyone, and that someone who has read this thread will spot him in a town or on a wall (you can't miss his thick Russian accent), or that he will show up smiling back in Tahoe.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone.

So I'm not a big ST flamer, but you are an as#@&%e. We all, including I'm guessing the OP, understand the likelihood of a good result here. But you are the only one that sees the need to kick somebody's friend in the gut.

Just heard about Boris missing yesterday. As many have expressed above, it hits you in the gut to know that someone so alive could be gone.

I hung out with him last fall in the Valley. A super positive guy with a calm demeanor and tenacious persistence. I heard he climbed Separate Reality after his 8th attempt. He seemed so excited about climbing and skiing and really just bursting with life. It is sobering to think even the brightest flames can be snuffed in a moment.

I'm headed to the valley this weekend and will be thinking of my friend.

My buddies told me they are gonna attempt a hard technical climb in Sierra this winter. I have not heard from them for over a week and on day 9 or so emailed a bunch of people and posted about them on forum too, turned out they went to death valley instead, and told me to calm the hell down.
I was sort of embarrassed to raise so much noise, but was happy they are safe. Hope for the same outcome here.

If a car is at a trailhead after dark, it gets some attention. When it is there more than a dya, the sheriff around here makes some calls. Is it normal for cars to remain parked at that trailhead for weeks in the spring?

You just don't know - I hope he is out and just couldn't get back to his car yet......

Fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

I'm a field biologist, and we often send our colleagues out into some dodgy places alone without giving it much thought. Years ago, while working on the East Side, a pair of our crew (one of whom had a boyfriend) never showed up after work one day. Next morning it was a full-on manhunt. Tearing all over the place and interviewing people, taking license plates of sketchy cars out on BLM land, etc., etc. In the end, just before we were about to notify the authorities, they sheepishly returned from the Winnedumah Hotel, where they'd spent an evening of adulterous bliss. We were all seriously pissed, but it was a good outcome. Here's hoping Boris has met a girl.

Pushing this back onto page one.

I haven't posted on the bivvy thread - couldn't choose a story. Coming out after dark from a day trip seems to occur for me with great regularity. On a couple of occasions, the sheriff in our cash strapped region has called my home after running my license plate. When my husband doesn't express great concern, he comes under some suspicion for doing me in...thus it surprises me that a car can be parked on that road for so long without someone looking at the windhield and seeing that note.

I hope he is found soon.

If he has an injury, such as a broken leg, he can survive a long time out there if he has access to water.

FYI: If you ever get stuck, build the largest "X" that you can, and make it as visible as possible from the air. Then sit tight.

My thoughts are with him and I hope it turns out OK.

edit: just read that he is really good in the backcountry. For a guy like that, a month is possible. Hell, more than that is possible.

Just hoping it wasn't an avalanche or fall. I don't know what the snow conditions are like. Any comments?

I'm very sorry at the loss of your friend. I offer his friends and family my condolescences.

It's because of stories like these that I don't do solo trips anymore. A few years back I had a week planned in the Sequoia backcountry. I was going to get off trail and hike over Harrison Pass, Milestone Pass, bag a ton of great peaks in the process. But once I got out there, it just didn't feel comfortable. As a younger guy I would've done it in a heartbeat but as I get older and have family, I have a hard time justifying the risk.

For us climbers, there's always some peace in knowing that a person passed doing something they loved. I hope his family can find some of that same peace.
