I got invited to go to this thing, though I certainly don't fit the "Stonemaster" qualifications based on age, locale, ability, etc. Very kind of Kevin (who doesn't know me from Adam, but knows my friends) to host us all. The pizza boxes were sky high, good fruit, great salsa, fun people, awesome slideshows - some people out there have some darn funny photos.

Carrie and I knew it was a good omen as we were driving down from SLO and saw our first ever MOONBOW just past the windmills and on the way up the big grade into Morongo Valley.

So, some photos for the interested parties:

Herb Laeger on some 5.12 (I think) on Dos Equis wall. I followed my fellow twenty-something up an easy route on the side and then ended up getting trapped up there after I volunteered to set up a TR on this 5.10 crack while Ryan set one up on this route. There I am, leaning over this thing, something I could easily slip on and pitch to my death as I'm clipped into only one piece . . . and then they start telling me the ropes aren't going where they are supposed to.

So now I'm like . . . "Where are they supposed to go, you're frustrating me!" Then it suddenly gets really hot and they decide not to bother with that route anyway and tell me to take it down after I've spent a half hour trying to figure out what they want.

Take it down. "Oh, it's down? Put it back up!" I am like, "I'll put it back up if you all will buy me dinner. I could die!" Jan says he will - but gets out of it convieniently that night. I put the TR up, but I don't want to rap down off of it because it's way down over the edge and I have to bat man down without being clipped in to get there (the anchors will be out of reach). I hate this crap. I tell them all I won't rap onit, but you have all these guys who've been doing this forever teasing me that if I don't trust my own anchor to rap on it, they won't touch it.

Peer pressure makes me do it. Anyway, I took this photo just before caving to the peer pressure as I was waiting for him to get off the line so I could rap down on the nice, clean rap line. :)

Mike Jaffe on the 5.12 now.

We're all sitting around discussing my need to visit Dr. El'Atrache about my bad arm when this guy shows up with the funkiest shoes ever - barge cement, old adidas tennis shoes, and sticky rubber. He proceeds to tell me he hasn't touched rock in years, and floats the bottom half of this twelve, the whole time ribbing people on the ground. Yes!

After a while we all reconvene at the campsite for beers, stories, and getting all gussied up to go to the reunion party.

Dave Houser and Mike Paul

This photo about describes my experience of the party. I'm standing there with Dave when this guy comes up and introduces himself, finds out who he is and says something like, "I was pretty good in my day, but God bless you man" and starts crossing himself and shaking hands for like, ten minutes. :) Dave, who has an uncanny resemblance to Steve Martin to me, is just standing there after he leaves smiling and going, "Wow, I have never had that happen before; who knew bolts could get that kind of reaction?"

Roger Linfield's pants. If that's what you can call them.

Roger was sitting around our little circle before the party and was gushing about how he's going to wear the pants he met his wife in. At that point I didn't know his last name and wondered if he was "Breedlove" of SuperTopo so I asked. He said, "Nah, I'm nobody. Heck, if no one knows who I am at this party, they'll remember the pants." I have no idea why I took the photo all stealthy when his back was turned. :)

Largo and me.

Dude, he spent the whole night trying to play "Guess who" every time he went by - but like everyone else, he doesn't buy that I can smell individual people's smells when they get that close. "What, I smell bad?" I should have let you think you did, after calling me a COW and my partner a man! Sheesh! :) \

Jan McCollum and his nose piercing.

So someone had an in with Black Diamond and got anodized Neutrinos with "JT Masters 2006" engraved on the inside of the spine as party favors for the "Masters." Pretty cool. I told Jan to pose for me, but no, it can NEVER be that simple with him, can it? :) I think it's a good look.

Okay, so there are a few other interesting photos floating around out there involving me, but nothing you care about. I didn't take that many photos of people because, as another 20-something party goer said, I felt like a junior higher at a high school party. :)

Most of us ended up going to bed at a reasonable hour so we were all up at 8 or so (my alarm clock being Artorious Rex who'd spent all weekend trying to find me) so it was off to do some climbing.

Went to go do Future Games wall at Split Rock, but there was a party of people rivaling our own, so we went to visit an FA Dave and Jan did out by Split Rocks. Spent the whole day hanging out there doing some low-key climbing, getting the season's first Chaco tan, me finding out how to climb slab all over again . . .

Kris Solem leading some route to the right of "The Grand Canyon Donkey Trail" with all of us watching. Nick points out there are 11 of us staring up at him. :)

Dave getting up this thing in spectacular gear.

I had to post this one because I think Dave is quite awesome. He got up this 5.10 in a swami belt and some old funny shoes he got on discount sale twenty something years ago. Good form, too, considering he hadn't touched rock since buying the shoes. :) My partner Carrie and I have decided to force him to climb with us more.

Great time. Always is when I get to hang out with these folk. Quite the priveledge.

The 150 Commemorative Biners were the brainchild of Maria Cranor [Queenie, Kippy, M, etc.] who had them custom engraved at BD factory. Totally classy (per usual).

What a fantastic weekend...

Dave Houser looks pretty poised there. You know, he and Jan did that route in about 1978!

I gotta jump over to the Thanks KP thread and throw down.

Hey, post up folks.

I know that we will have to wait for Roy to develop the slides, scan them and post them, but what about the rest of you digital folks?

What "sketchy" said...

Largo, Gramicci, Rocomazzo and I were all talking about how much we regret not taking more photos, Back in the Day. (Had we gotten into the habit of collecting Kodachrome memories, perhaps we could have avoided some of the slander!)

Some habits are hard to break, though... Me? I took both a digital still camera AND a nice Digital8 movie camera along this weekend and NEVER ONCE took them outa the sack!

Post up, lads and lassies!

Nice to see Big Al in that shot with Princess Di, he kinda looks
like a blond Geronimo.
I've got a favorite Big Al quote: "Moyles, you as#@&%e! I'm never
climbing with you again!" Oct 1972
Why do you think he would say something like that?

Bob, meltdowns happen...

Real Hidden Valley and HVCG were like old folks homes. Never seen so many people on Run For Your LIfe, Runaway and Rainy Day/Tic Tic Boom at one time ever...

Gramicci was styling (even though I inadvertly sandbagged him on one route), Largo was out defying death (and nearly got busted by ranger) on his mountain uni. JW made everything look easy, Linh claimed he was tired, and Henny did some good chicken scratching on the Beav -- to everyone's amusement.

Mass assaults in HVCG were fun too. Too many people to see, hang and climb with.

Giddy up crusty, rusty old dad cranksters!

'Got a gallon of horse liniment rubbed in to the guns and a stack 'o polaroid pics: scanned, chopped, doctored and loaded.
