I've done it several times on peoples machines when they couldn't.

I did manually.

Yes Norton Antivirus is the worst stupid POS ever made.

Stopping the services is the easiest and then deleting those services.

Here's a little "help" from Norton himself. I think there is actually something useful here. dated 8-21-11. It's not NAV, NIS, but it's all Norton.

Hi charentejohn,

Welcome to the Norton Community. You have Norton Internet Security (NIS), is this correct? If as you say, NIS was not removed with the use of the Norton Removal tool then please tell us the version you have which you can find from Support > About.

Also, your Norton 2011 product would not have been upgraded to 2012 automatically. Only updates within the current product year are done automatically with no user intervention. Further, 2012 is still in BETA and not intended to be installed on "production" computers.

Do you have any other security software already installed besides NIS? Did you install Orange's security suite before attempting to uninstall NIS? If so, this could have caused problems for you because you would have had two security software installed at the same time which could cause conflicts.

**What specifically leads you to believe that NIS was not removed? Is it because you see NIS being present in the task tray or because you see a couple of Norton directories left behind?
**
Have you tried uninstalling NIS from the Control Panel before running the Norton removal tool? If not, please try this. If you still have problems then try booting to SAFE mode and try from there.

Just to make sure you have the latest removal tool, you can download again from here.

If you have not already downloaded Orange's security suite (I believe they use McAfee) then I would recommend downloading that first before uninstalling NIS. You should be disconnected from the Internet until you have your new security software installed so that you are not left unprotected while connected to the Internet.

Also you mentioned you stopped paying for the NIS license. Does this mean that NIS is expired? If it is expired, how long was it in this state without a replacement security software being installed?

Best wishes.

I FINALLY got a hold of Semantic...

Very INTERESTING how it was handled...

However it worked, they actually took total control of my computer (Like the "Outer Limits")...

Was weird watching the arrow move around and do sh!t while I just sat here and watched...

THEY, not me, totally removed it and I was given a full refund...

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!...

Now I NEED to find a BETTER virus protection program...

Suggestions???

Anything FREE out there that works???...

How do we know you're Locker if Norton had control of you? You're assuming

Yes just disconnect the Ethernet cable. Works every time.

There's lots of free versions but I don't know how well they work ultimately.

I use Avira paid version, They have a free version.

The reason I picked Avira is because it's good and doesn't use massive amounts of ram like most of those other dumbsh!t antivirus programs around.

McAfee, Bitdefender, is sh!t too.

Kaspersky's real-time protection is very memory-hogging.

Congrats on your removal. As far as anti-virus, I use Prevx, but it's not free. They're in England, but when I had a sticky problem once, after we coordinated time zones, they remotely accessed my machine and spent over an hour cleaning it up. It was very instructive to view the whole process. I got to see some of the tools they used and it made me appreciate that I don't have to do this type of thing for a living anymore.

My license expired and I now run it only in scan mode which doesn't cost and I use Kaspersky to both scan, filter and clean up.

Everybody should pursue safe cruising, but can you imagine being restricted to the bottom forty? Ouch.

I know almost nothing about computers, but I do know about frustration with Microsoft. I got rid of it but not via Apple. Use Ubuntu on your PC. It's free. There was a thread here a while back.

Norton was a ruthless bully to my poor computer. Kaspersky brought peace, order and enlightenment.

Kaspersky removed all relic and remains of Norton . Not a single virus in about five years on either my PC or two laptops. (Norton itself was the worst virus)

as we speak Prevx 11-k and Kaspersky 28-k. my master boot record infection came after I went to a site that was supposed to be streaming a basketball game.

The Yosemite webcams have never caused the computer to become infected.
