I'll go ya one more, Off White, you Rake:

Hawkins and I were climbing with this nice lass at the Lions Den, Dead Man, which is in a pretty nice lava bed sink hole. She's doing this wicked stem above us on a route called Fear of Flying, Hawkins, ganders about, says: "Pretty Nice Little Crater, Eh?"

I'm not the bad man.

'K, JayBra:
Thanks for going easy on Helga, per the layback on Coynes.
Yes, nice Layback anyhow.

Believe this: the shot on Coyne's was taken in the fall of '87.
When I met her in my YMS class, spring of '87, she could climb 5.6, tops.

So, name that route, 'Neb Thread: whatabout the Granite she's leadin', summer '88 - next shot below Coynes?

End of last installment:
Looks like Bob is on Stone Groove.

Don't the Gorge look good in black & white? You guys know you can lead Hangman's now? Yup. Retrobolted. I can't complain though. It's a fun little route. Harder now that that rail down low has been manicured with a pry bar. Change is th only constant.

Oh! For shame Tarbaby! I was strictly talking about her software, not her soft parts. That sweet wife of yours is gonna give you a spanking if she knows what you've been thinking. Of course, some people will pay extra for that.

Anyway, to the topic branch closer at hand: Hangman's was more or less a solo as a lead, got a snap of VonBoge leading it somewhere in a pile. Sympathy got bolted by the mod squad too I hear. It went just fine on nuts, though the one funky pin was always loose anytime it got tested. One Step Beyond not only got bolted, but re-named and up-rated from 10c to 11a.

Here, one gorge shot for Mr. Vawtoe:

Route renaming, rebolting, homogenization for the masses. There was a lot of good work too: the trail work was thankless toil that improved the stability of the slope and access. And some good new routes were found. But that guy has removed himself from public view, and review. It's a done thing. The things we lost, we mourned and let go. Like some of the faces on this thread.

But if you guys ever get down this way, we're not goin' to the Gorge. Tajo's the place for a soiree. Rancho Wernerio, with pine trees and chapparal, horses, tequila, and virgin boulders. I'll bring Bill D. and Riley too. We've got ties that go back to the beginning! We'll recite the scout oath, then drain every bottle!

Bob, I've got a problem near the trailer that no one else's been able to do. Hehe.

yep, galen sure knows how to carve a line. who's got those pictures of him from '76, sailing over the pool light and nailing the coping at the "toilet bowl" in hillcrest? he and mike paul and david paul used to go there quite a bit, first or second pool to get rode in san diego.

JV, you couldn't possibly be referring to b. davenport, my old boy scout troop leader???? not possible, last time i saw him was at the first magnolia contest, '78 i think. the day after the contest werner organized a mass assault on the north face of san jacinto and gunter wound up falling 2,000 feet and somehow escaped alive...

Bob, Bill is my father-in-law, Werner was my brother-in-law ('til their divorce), and Riley is my wife. How 'bout them roots? That makes us like, second cousins thrice removed. I remember the Gunter episode. Fell without his axe, and survived. Bill and I had an epic up there too.

closed my ass.

every time i go to san diego i poach the pink boulder and trash rock, plus those routes up the hillside from trash rock. the traverse on the backside of the pink boulder is still one of the best BP's in san diego, and the "north face directissima" problem on trash rock, just left of birtly's seam, is solidly embedded in my top-ten all-time desert island boulder problems list. those last two moves, with your feet on dimes, stretching for that wierd pocket, looking at a 16 foot slapper into poison oak...whhoEEEE it don't get no better than that!

now, trust me, i just HATE breakin' rules (wink wink, nudge nudge) but i learned how to boulder on those two nuggets, and if i couldn't climb on those boulders ever again i'd feel like i'd lost a limb or something.

Wow, someone's Cantina just vanished. Perhaps it was just a dream and figment of my imagination? Looked like a nice time in CT.

I hope CT can remain more or less a secret among friends. I know there are many who know how to get there. I would hate for CT to ever get published in any kind of guide. Are you listening DK?

Someone described it as a "Poorman's Patagonia." So true. My wedding Bach. party was held there way back in '91. I would love to see a reunion of sorts for the SMs, and PMBs, and CT veterans of sorts take place at CT. That would be awesome. Probably the only place such a get-together like that could really happen. As long as the place isn't burned down. Lot's to do in Baja. Love it. Even XC skied some in winter on top of the Sierra San Pedro Martir(sp?) near Picacho Del Diablo. I've been up "Del Diablo," would like to do the class 5 SW ridge sometime.

Have my recently acquired (new for me) cherry '87 VW Vanagon Westfalia "Syncro" all ready for such an adventure. Some time I would love to launch my paraglider off of the GWT and fly it to Laguna S. or beyond. Need to do some of the big walls for sure. Haven't yet.

Funny, where I'm from there were no cracks and laybacking was raised to a high art form; we (incorrectly) always thought and viewed crack climbing as a pretty cro-magnon affair all about simply "doing" routes that were obvious rather than "seeing" and climbing routes that are not. We didn't appreciate the inherent art involved with the "doing". Hell, we even laybacked Supremacy in Eldo. In the end it was our loss and it's been an long ugly process trying to right those initial misperceptions and lack of exposure.

I yanked the Cantina link. The address doesn't end with .jpg so I guess I can't post the pic here. Point is, there will be no shortage of distilled spirits. The trick is not to disable yourself for climbing on Sunday.

P.S. I have not mastered this trick yet. Best I could do was a crack of noon start.

well you could knock me over with a feather. Brad Huys. his san diego nickname in the 70's, coined by GK and guy andrews, was "bee hey", a derivation of "big head", can't remeber the origens on that one...i remember when he and tucker did the lost arrow chimmney, '88 or so, and they wound up spending an unplanned night in the notch... bee hey's girlfreind was buggin' so she went down to the rescue cache and made dill break out the celestron and the bullhorn...dill's doing the old "CLIMBER ON THE ROCK, DO YOU NEED ASSISTANCE!?" thing, and brad and tucker who are just waking up and getting ready to aid climb out of the notch (the expected fixed ropes were pulled, hence the bivvy) are looking all around thinking that some nearby climbers might be in trouble and they're gonna get sucked into helping with a rescue...so tucker aid's 'em outta there with some improvised etriers and their free climbing rack and they got no clue they were the subjects of the rescue until they casually wander into camp four.....too funny.

brad and his honey split the sheets shortly thereafter...

Still hear my friends refer to Brad as "bee hey" to this day. I remember going over to his place long ago and find him intensely customizing his gear, shaving a millimeter of leather out of the toe box on his shoes caused it rubbed on his foot or something similiar very insignficant to most of us, but not bee hey. There was always that same haze filling the room, part of the equation

Bee Hey came about with a bunch of folks sitting around stoned in his old splittie VW van in the lodge lot, making other names with their initials. As soon as Brad said "big head" a look came over his face and he knew he'd made a serious mistake.

Still, I figure it was better than the guys who witnessed him emptying his nocturnal urinal container and thereafter referred to him as Peebottle. He really hated that one.

That brings up a good definition of "the good old days," when you could live in your VW bus in the Lodge lot for two months and never get hassled.

Snapshot source makes for crummy scans, there's just not enough in the original image. That's why your Ramp snaps look crummy too, though it's the same camera and film as those other gorge b/w shots of mine - those're just scanned from 8x10's.

oogle this, homeboy: our hero on the (c)bone-crushing f.a. of the gorge's most feared and sought-after testpiece: "clear light", aka "balls out", aka "why bother??"

I'm tired of the same old 5.5 slab route on The Dome in Boulder Canyon, the only route my tired arms will allow.

On top of that, comma, I now feel as though my hole career on rock has been misled, wasted.

WTF People: with Mission Gorge standin' SO proud, why climb anywhere else???

Tarbuster, climbed once at the Gorge, if I remember right it felt like every hold or block was gonna come off in your hand. Did not enjoy it, but some vatos from the Del Mar area (who post up here)once took us to Rainbow boulders in north San Diego county, right outside of my little town of Fallbrook. If you and the wife are packin it up for San Diego try Fallbrook...good bouldering, good pot, out of the way, and yer even welcome to wear cowboy hats here!!! Got a red neck bar call Ron's Red Eye(no relation)and schit there's even wine a few miles away in the Temecula Valley(schit wine, but wine). Come on by good buddy! bring your cowboy hat, climbing shoes, wine glasses and leave the camera at home.
Peace
ps. roy there are no pictures of me in existance. my specialty is to blend into the surrounding scenery, so any pictures you may have taken of me WAY back, I wouldn't show up...I simply blend in to the background. If you look really hard in some of your old Josh or Valley shots you may be able to sort of pick me out, I wasn't as good at it then.
Is that a photo of the Cirque of the Unclimbables? Really nice

I ain't the blondy. Ya, went out with Naygro, Shawn, Mikey Paul, and I think Badyrka to the Boulders. Really good stuff, but Mikey tells me the Hatches own it for private tours. Plenty of other great stuff around though. If I can figure out how to do the photo thing (I'll get my son)I'll try to get something on so as you can try to remember what I look like. If you say we met through Mike Paul, probably in the back of my car, in Josh, loadin'bowls, no wonder you can't remember! i was good at being around but not being known i was around. You'll remember bra!
Peace
