Backpacking Alaska's Mt Prindle

The ice climbing in Fairbanks thread reminded me of a 2003 backpacking trip I took to Mt Prindle. The trail head is about 2 hours NE of Fairbanks, and we hiked into our camp the same day we drove. The next day we all walked up the back side of Prindle, and then John and I went and did the cirque of the loonies, a nontechnical ridge walk around the area. This wasn't a climbing trip, but Prindle has a slew of 5.9 and 5.10(?) routes on it (help me here Fairbanks climbers). We had smoke from wildfires for the first half of that day, but it cleared later.

Early in the hike in.

The granite face of Mt Prindle in the distance.

Descending to camp.

Camp creek.

Summer smoke rolls in.

Our favorite Austrians.

The crew with the face in the background. The rock quality is pretty good and it was frustrating not being able to climb on it.

You can see the first part of the ridge walk in the background.

These outcrops were interesting, but I don't know about the rock quality.

The second part of the ridge walk.

The last part of the ridge walk.

Cool granite tors. The rock was pretty darn rough (think Josh without polishing), but solid.

This is way around the ridge near where we drop down towards the camp's drainage.

The camp is down near rainbow's end.

Just more beautiful granite with the smoke having cleared away.

Very nice - TFPUAC!

And no bugs or bears, either, apparently.

Thanks for the responses.

RE bugs and grizzlies:

Yeah, the grizzlies are always a consideration. We didn't see any this trip, though.

Re bugs and mosquitoes: As I recall this was late enough (end of July) for that latitude and elevation, that there were few/no bugs. Then again maybe subsequent bug swarms drove that nightmare from my mind.
