For folks that created their nation from revolution and the desire to escape elitist sc#m-bags that were hording all the wealth, I'm a little surprised at the negativity towards the protestors.
I have purple hair, and a good job. Self expression is no longer taboo, and let's hope that the rigid need to conform in all aspects of your life dissolves. The colour of someone's hair or the piercing in their nose has no indication of their intellect or value as a human.
Climbers are often known for eschewing the constraints of modern capitalism, so I would have thought in many ways these folks are kindred spirits.

All aspects of society have norms and fashions. Pretty much all people have a desire to belong.
What I object to is classifying people based solely on the colour of their hair, the hole in their nose/ear/whatever, their shoes, and so on. "If you have purple hair, you're stupid." Those are the kinds of statements I'm talkin' 'bout.
I wear whatever I like, have my hair however makes me happy and comfortable, and it in no way alters how well I do my job, my intellectual capacity, or my desire to change the world.

so, which of us is not "conforming" to our societal norms? Even climbers considering themselves rogues operating outside of the mainstream have norms and elements that identify them to their tribe.
I suppose what I mean is the direct or overt pressure to conform. When I was in industry, the pressure to wear a certain type of clothing, have a specific haircut, live in a certain neighbourhood, and drive a certain type of car was more than overt. You would be ostracized and excluded if you did not conform. I wonder if the folks at OWS would turn their backs on me were I to show up without my purple hair, no piercings, and no ink. (I don't have tats or holes...) I doubt it.
In retrospect, my point is probably more about acceptance than conformity.
I still stand by the fact that the protests are true to the spirit of the US and it's foundations. Since when was it anti-American (unpatriotic) to not speak out when you see what you think is injustice?

I have had a chance to listen to many of the people that are there, and I don't get the sense that most (everyone's different...) want to chuck the whole thing out. What people are angry at is the outright theft that has been taking place (Iraq war, etc) essentially draining the US Treasury into the bank accounts of a few wealthy individuals.
Warren Buffet, perhaps America's most ardent capitalist, has supported systemic changes that would eliminate the current tax structure that allows him to pay a lower rate than most of his employees. The rules of the game have been altered by a certain few players to benefit only those players.
The result is a decrease in economic mobility. Isn't one of the foundations of the US built on the idea of opportunity? When the so-called level playing field is tilted to an extent that is so steep that it concentrates the wealth and power in the nation in the hands of so few, I think that flies in the face of what your nation stands for.
Trickle-down economics were never designed to benefit anyone other than wealthiest few. What has been trickling down? Nothing in terms of economic benefit. The only trickle has been tinkle. (yes, they're pissing on everyone!) Wages have been stagnant except within the tiny minority of high income earners. Corporate profits have been massive, and yet unemployment remains high. Why? Fear means companies can drive the workers they have harder and not hire new ones. Lack of competition means companies don't have the need to reinvest those profits, and jobs are not created. "We're the JOB CREATORS" the wealthy keep bleating. Bull$hit. ~10% measured unemployment (reality is higher) shows that it ain't working.
People want a strong and prosperous society where the economic system serves the needs of the people. All the people.

As far as what an employer is looking for, they want both someone who can do the job, whatever it is, and they want someone that represents whatever values the company has (or lacks).
If I went to Middle Way Cafe to get a hummus sprout and red onion sandwhich on an organic multi grain bread and I found the young adult that took my order was dressed like a NY banker, I'd likely be suspicous. Purple hair and piercings, I expect it.
My company has a dress code, they want to display a level of professionalism to our clients. I also had pre-employment drug testing, and am subjected to random drug tests. I don't have a problem with that.
My only beef with the Occupy croud is it's easy to sit around and beotch and moan. What is needed are concrete solutions to the problems we face in this country. I've seen it repeatedly in business, politics, and the public at large. Everyone is willing to chip in 2 cents to complain, hardly anyone is willing to offer a solution and roll their sleaves up to get to work solving the problems.
If we have crooks on Walstreet and in Washington DC, and assuredly we do, then investigate, prosecute and incarcerate. You don't have to get all the bastards, get the worst and the others will surely clean up their act.

I read the posts in this thread and find it pretty offensive. I'm not a stinky hippie who can't hold a job. I have a total of 11 piercings, a tattoo and have had purple hair. I have a great job with a pretty conservative company. I don't get piercings to be a "non-conformist" I do it because it makes me happy. It's about being me and really nothing more. My dad was right when he said conformity comes in every color, shape and size you can think of.
Those women are beautiful inside and out because they're doing something true to their hearts and being who they want to be. Until you're on the streets standing up for what you believe in, don't judge those women. Thanks.

Well, I admit that many of the women in the video were easy on the eyes. However, I also think they're very attractive in that they're speaking out for what they believe in.
As to the Tea Party folks, I believe in their right to speak as well. I don't agree with them, but I want their thoughts expressed. I wish so many of them didn't wrap their ideas in hatred.
Some might think that the ridiculous hatred that is racist, homophobic and sexist should be suppressed. No. If we bury the hatred, it festers and grows like an untreated infection. In the light, it can be identified and countered.

funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security

and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for
any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans
do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay
will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the
same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American
people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12.
The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen
made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor,
not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours
should serve their term's), then go home and back to work.
If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people then it will only take
three days for most people (in the U.S.) to receive the message. Maybe it is
time.

In my post I said I love that we have the right to protest! BUT, this crowd needs to have some solid demands, and reasons. I do not respect people that lay there like bums and say "We want change!" If one wants change it needs to come from within. Our country is not perfect, but it is much better than most places around. Exactly why all these ukrainians, egyptians, mexicans, africans etc etc continue to come here every day in big #s. People look up to this place. If one wants to make it better PLEASE at least have some SPECIFIC reasonable demands. Sitting around painting children's faces is awesome but....THAT DOES NOT MAKE THIS PLACE ANY BETTER!!!

If one can't make it in the US, they can't make it anywhere.
To me its an extension of the entitlement mindset, there are no losers. It drives me up the wall when my kids do team sports, and everybody on every team gets the t-shirt and a trophy. In real life, you don't get a trophy just for showing up. There are consequences to your decisions and trophys go to the winners.
A kid goes to college, picks a major with little or no demand, and graduates with a $100k loan. Is it mean and unfair that they don't have a job? How about the kid that worked hard through high school to get top grades and hence a scholarship, works part time through college to pay whatever additional costs are incurred, and graduates with a degree that is in high demand. Should that second student have their wages docked to cover the first? Should their wages be reduced to pay for the first student to be given a job, that really doesn't benefit the employer?
Our society and primary school system has coddled bad decision making and tried to make also rans feel like winners for far too long.
Those who are on top of their game are always in demand. But they are never sitting around holding up signs and blowing bubbles.

Dunno dude, the system worked for me, even though English is my second language! I just turned 25 on Oct 24th and gathered enough money to get a condo in the Bay Area! Wouldn't be able to do that if I painted faces on the street instead of getting nothing but A(mostly)/Bs for 4 years straight.

Our systems has never, ever been fair. Life, has never ever, nor will it ever be fair. That is reality, and protesting that fact won't change it one bit. There is no fair system in the world, nor will their ever be.
It's not like any of this is new either. Way back when our ancesters were hunter/gatherers, the climate would change and game species would migrate i.e. the happy hunting grounds were no longer so happy. They would either migrate with the game, or starve. That's why we have ruins from ancient civilizations. If the land was good, then new building were built on the ruins. If it was no good, the ruins remained.
It is no different today. If people by the millions have come here from foreign nations, not knowing English, and in most cases having minimum job skills, and they are able to make a living, then why are so many in this country who know the language and should have obtained some degree of job skills in their lives find it "impossible"?
Graduating from High School does not gurantee immediate employment and $30-40k yearly salary. Graduating college does not gurantee instant employment and $40-60k yearly salary.
Go on the net, find out what parts of the country are doing well, what type of jobs are available, what skills are needed and how one can gain them. There are still industries with decent paying entry level jobs for those who are willing to work hard and learn. Yes, there is cost involve in traveling the country to find work and no gurantees, but there are options. There is also the cost and risk involved with not doing anything to better yourself, and that does have a guranteed outcome.
I've found you can stack the odds in your own favor by your own efforts. Demanding others do so for you has never been terribly effective. You make your own luck.

I was SO glad to hear on the news this morning the NY contingent was marching on the banks(especially BoA).
Some may not be aware of it, but a class action suit was filed against BoA for stealing their customers money via overdraft fees(though they admit no wrongdoing in suit).(Link: http://bofaoverdraftsettlement.com/);
The suit made the claim that BoA(and other banks) were using a method of debiting accounts which led to cascading overdraft fees. Which did happen, I can testify. People defend the bank actions with statements like "If you don't have money in the bank, don't spend it!"
Which would make sense - except that is not what was happening.
I was one of many who found BoA routinely witholding deposits to my account, from local checks(even drawn on BoA branches!), to store debits, for up to 3 weeks in some cases. Usually, a deposit of a check would be cleared the following day, even when it was from out of state. Suddenly, checks were being held, even in-state ones, even checks drawn against BoA accounts.
Store debits, which by law must be filed within 3 days after transaction, were not showing up on the bank ledger for a week and more. Usually gas stations do have that delay in processing, but I am talking about transactions from utility payments automatically deducted from my account, amongst others.
Used to a system of credit/debit, a LOT of people suddenly found themselves unclear exactly as to why they had had overdrafts. I recall going to the bank, mad at myself for f'ing up, and wondering HOW it had happened, as I had been being SO careful, and finding myself in a line behind 5 or more other people in exactly the same boat.
You would have to wait 45 minutes, an hour, to be told "I'm not sure why this happened" by the customer person, who would then remove the overdraft.
But after a few times, they began refusing to remove the overdraft fee($35), saying "Sorry, you have a history of overdrafts."
I had one check for $600, from an in0-state check, on BoA. It was held for THREE WEEKS, and ONLY taken off hold when I threw a tizzy fit in the bank lobby(I had been told it was on hold after checking the 1st week, but they didn't know why, and would clear it next day - they didn't. When I went in the next time, they kept me waiting more than an hour, and I had to leave. 3rd time - they showed my a computer screen that said it was held for some code number. When asked what the code stood for - they said they didn't know. That was when the tizzy fit happened, and the person lifted the hold.
$600 kept from me, for no reason that could be explained. As you can imagine, I can not afford to have my cash flow impacted that way, and that was standard procedure for BoA.
It was - clearly - intentional.
Some here will try to say that I(and the many others who are part of this settlement, are in the wrong. But you are incorrect in that supposition.
Like I am suuuuure, the banks would roll over and settle if they didn't know damned well what they did wasn't right.
I know I have not stated my case very clearly in this post, but I can assure you, it is not that I was spending money I didn't have, that BoA fined me for. They would hold deposits to accounts until they could cause a cascading effect of overdrafts, in such a way that 5-6 items would overdraw. I had times when I would get a notice of $135 in overdraft feed,
THIS is the sort of thing that is behind the OWS movement.

As in, someone who truly enjoys, say, works produced during the Dutch Golden Age may have different tastes in art from someone else who revels in, say, postmodernist works such as Pollock's Drip paintings?

But you thinking it does not make it so. What you're really saying is "anything I don't like is stupid." Not a way to encourage people to take you seriously.

Dr. F, I agree that life is unfair, and IT IS incredibly f*#ked up that our jobs are getting shipped to China. In fact I was not able to find a job in a hospital after I got my Registered Nurse license because there were simply no real new grad programs. Spots that were opened up for 'new grads' were given to employees of the hospital who wanted to move around, or to other nurses with experience. Go to any nursing home in the Bay Area, 80% of workers are on work visa from Philippins. WTF? We have a crap load of our own nurses who need a job, and we hire from over seas because it is cheaper! THIS IS bullshit!
BUT, if you believe in:
OWS is just getting started
It will grow by the year
Next year there will be millions, and then 10s of millions
and it will keep getting bigger until something happens
...you must have IQ of a lizard. Or maybe you have delusions.

If at any point there will be any real threat of revolution no one will care about your rights (or my rights). There will be real military presence, and the crowds will go home (after they will get the sh#t kicked out of them, or worse).
These crowds WILL go home, because they will cause NO change by staying in the street. If you want change assemble a third party and win an election. Although I doubt it will be the case.
What always intrigued me is that it costs millions of dollars to fund a Presidential campaign, but a President only makes $400,000 annually. Now the only 2 reasons that these politicians would spend this much money just to fund a campaign, in hopes of becoming president are 1) They are incredibly stupid investors or 2) They expect to make a large return on their investment, or at least be fully reimbursed. Sooo lets just assume its #2, my question is, who is putting money in their pockets, what are they telling them to do, and why does regular Joe the voter think that elected officials give a sh#t about them?

The global elite will not give anything. It must be taken from them. There are some estimates that they have hidden $20 trillion in non-disclosure banks. The taxes on that money are owed, and this accounts to a massive theft from the treasuries of their resident nations.

Do you think that the $200 Billion that was stolen from Libya should be returned to the nation? Of course. Well, the same thing has happened to the people of many nations, and we want our money.
We must also change how we go forward from this point. Tax loopholes and massive exemptions for the wealthy must be eliminated. Consolidation of corporate entities in massive oligopolies that function as monopolies must be broken apart. "Economies of scale" my arse. Elimination/reduction of corporate income taxes allows company treasuries to grow, and capital also becomes held within a monopoly.
People have confused "fair" with "treated the same." In fact, fairness means not treated everyone the same. If fairness and equal treatment were the same, then we would not install wheelchair access, have braille books, and so on. Fairness means not treating unequal people equally.
The protestors are not asking for a planned economy state with all treated the same. What they want is the elimination of the policies of the previous 30 years that have allowed a massive concentration of wealth and power.

What substantial change for the positive came from within the government? None. External pressure and protest are the key. The issue many of us have with the OWS movement is the are asking for things that don't make sense. As Vitality mentioned, one demand has been to wipe out student debt. I'm sorry, but if you signed the loan docs, you should have read them. If you are so edumacated, don't whine to us now about being in debt. Those of us who paid off our own loans, saved and worked through college and got scholarships by working our asses off in high school have no tolerance for this whiny BS.
Yeah, being $25-100k in debt sucks. STFU, go to N. Dakota and get a job in the oilfield. They are hiring. Man the f*#k up. Don't ask us for ANOTHER goddamn bailout. You signed the contract.

I'm not a fan of the big banks, but no one put a gun to anyone's head to sign the loan contract for their student loan. Every kid who is in that position could have done what the rest of us did and worked during school, gotten scholarships, gotten summer internships, or otherwise done what it takes to minimize the size of the loans coming out of school, then PAY THEM OFF.

No one forced them to take this kind of loan or sign the documents. There are good salesmen/saleswomen out there that will sell you a lemon. But it has to be YOUR responsibility to check the details of the loan you are about to sign!
One of the reasons our country is so f*#ked right now is because people live in credit. Especially when they do not have the funds to pay back. Personally, I think living in credit is like being a slave. So I do not purchase anything on my credit card that I can't pay off on the coming bill. I think that is called being responsible, not being a 'fool.' AND I am not Republican or a conservative, FYI. I think both political parties have too many extremes. So do 'liberals' and 'conservatives.' All of these sound 'nuts' to me. Take responsibility, work, climb=nirvana. : )

As for the student loans...only loan you can't dischage in bankruptcy (only one I know of anyway). Run a big bank or fund, borrow money and bet the farm on euro debt (hello Mr. Corzine) and lose...f*#k it, declare BRupt and walk.

I went to community college than a 2 year RN (Nursing school, to become a registered nurse, yes laugh at me I'm a murse) program. Since I maintained a GPA above 3.5 there were grants available, for example all my books were 90% covered every semester. Since I was also 'low income' back than the units were cheap too.
I do not think it matters how I paid for it. There are a lot of individual cases in which people do get screwed. I chose to go into a profession that is in need, where I see myself earning a degree, one I will like doing...it worked out for me.
