I realize it has been a long time coming, but the climbing community still has the opportunity to positively influence the Merced River Plan.

Please read this message and pass it on to your friends.

Yosemite National Park invites you to engage with us in the Merced River Plan.

We have five exciting new workshops coming up. They are happening between October 27 and November 9 -- some are in Yosemite and the final one in San Francisco.

This is a unique time in our planning process as we are empowering citizens to provide input before the alternatives are packaged together.

CHECK OUT OUR WORKBOOK to get a snapshot of what will be covered in the meetings. We will also have some of the options displayed visually at the workshops through preliminary site sketches.

The plan needs to find a balance between the following elements:

ecological and natural resource values,
direct connection to the river values
visitor use management, and
land use and associated developments

We anticipate discussions might include restoration, parking, recreational activities, camping, transportation and more.
Date Time Location
Oct. 27, 2011 5-8 pm El Portal Community Center El Portal, California

Oct. 28, 2011 1-5 pm Wawona Community Center Wawona, California

Nov. 7, 2011 10 am – 4 pm Garden Terrace, Yosemite Lodge Yosemite N.P.

Nov. 9, 2011 5-8 pm The Palm Room, San Francisco Film Centre

*For directions to this meeting location, visit: www.sffilmcentre.com/contact/directions.html

The meetings will be both interactive and educational. They two key activities at the meeting will include

1) a 'gallery walk' of poster boards, with each board being staffed by a planner or subject matter expert. This provides the opportunity for a guided tour of the workbook and meeting content. The boards will also provide the opportunity for people to react and make comments as they process the information.

2) interactive dialogue with meeting participants: facilitated discussion that is captured through engaging graphics will provide meeting participants with an opportunity to explore the management considerations addressed in the plan, weigh the options available to address them, and explore the conflicts and/or secondary questions created by choosing different combinations of solutions.

Visit the following web page for information about the meetings.
http://www.nps.gov/yose/parkmgmt/mrp_meetings.htm

On the page you will find links to:
1) A fact sheet that describes where we are in the MRP process.
2) A flyer that you can print to post in your community or your office.
3) The workbook that presents the content and context for the upcoming meetings.

Alternatives Development Workshops

Throughout the development of the Merced River Plan we have checked in with you to let you know where we are in the process, to share what we've learned, and to get your ideas. In Spring 2011, Merced River Plan Workshops and Science Forum, we shared with you what we were learning about the condition of the river and its Outstandingly Remarkable Values (ORVs). Since then we've been working on developing some options for addressing the management considerations identified through the Draft Baseline Condition Report and public comment. We are identifying some of the most significant issues to share with you this fall through a series of public forums and a workbook. These forums will be an opportunity to let us know what you think of the options we've identified and help us start laying the foundations for feasible alternatives.

(For those who are geographically-challenged, the Merced River runs through Yosemite Valley, aka the big ditch.)

Thanks for pointing that out...which is why climbers should take advantage of this planning opportunity!

Bump.

And I don't think rivers need to be managed. Humans need to be managed.

Tooth,
You got that right! Maybe we should call it the Merced River Human Management Plan.

I'm going, but only if they let me get these introduced to the plan.

Just think how useful they could be to get little old ladies to the base of vernal falls to search for people who go over the falls. They could even be used to take tourists up there.
