All right Kids, Back to it!
Here's Mussy Tooling about at the Helm
of the Time Machine's 2nd string hitter.
So heres the skinny:
Everything the Fish layed his hands on back then, Mechanically speaking (*Exclusive of the Very High Quality Super Bomber Fish Products Inventory*), was either Makeshift, Modified, or Kick Ass Cheap. Usually all three!

Case in point; Russ worked as a machinist, say 1980. Working as a machinist, great pride in tools is expected. This so, particularly with anything you might tap a part with, like a HAMMER. So, these guys/gals would have a set of spiffy, A SET, yes, spiffy delicate, soft brass hammers. Mussy had and would not upgrade from this: THE MANGLER. Said tool was essentially a piece of twisted aluminum, bent at grotesque angles and upgraded with finger tape where it needed a soft touch.

Enter RODGE:
This Would be my Pops.
But, those ARE Mike Paul's Shorts he's wearin'.
(For a look at Mussy's pops, refer to tale end of old school Josh Shots, part 1)

Now, Rodge is a notorious shite talker (No Surprise There!)
Rodge also raced sports cars in the early sixties, so his sense of mechanicals is astute.

Fish always and ever, when picking me up at my house to go on a "Mission of any sort", DEMANDED that I be out front, to avoid the "WRATH OF RODGE".

One day, in that Honda Beater Russ is pictured in above, Rodge caught us out in front of the house. Russ slapped his hand to his head, while Rodge demanded the hood be lifted for an inspection. So Walling teaser that he is, trying to get ahead, taunts pops with a diversion: "YO, check out those lug nuts Rodge" OK, one Lug Bolt completely Missing, aft passenger wheel.

RODGE retorts: "Yep, one thing for sure Russel, WE KNOW THE DOG IS MANGY!".
HAHAHAH. Rodge busted 'im little Fishy Dude.

Other infamous Rodge quotes: Circa '81, About 7 of us climbers are out by the rope ladder in my backyard, all blazing on 'Cid. Rodge is clasping like 5 wine glasses and getting ready to pour us all a little Vino, he takes one glancelook at Mike Paul, says "You- young man, whatever you been doin', ITS AGIN' YA!"

Then as if that's not enough to floor us all, he turns to Russ, without skippin' a beat: " And you, you are a sociopath, likely a danger to society and SHOULD BE WATCHED CLOSELY"
HAHAHAHAHAHA. HAH.

Here's one for yeah ...... Tar - Roy

That boulder right behind Middendorfs right hand is the one we tested the first "Fish Hook". Ole Russ drove back from LA after making them and hands me one beauty and we go to that boulder right there.

I place it and jump on it. Middendorf comes over and and says to me let's both jump on it at the same time and see, snap goes the hook.

We broke it in half. Poor Russ comes running over in shock, hahaha.

Hey Russ, you better tell the rest of the story.

Yeah, poor Yabo, he's around as a ghost. It says if one commits suicide then you will remain in your subtle body until your time is up.

Is that Richard Harrison to the right of Yabo?

And Ducey with the blanket to put on the rear windsheild and he made me wear a helmet. Good old Ducey thought I was going to die from the whiplash of the pulled bolt/hanger flying through the rear window through my head.

On one pull the hanger went through the license plate and into the steel plate behind that.

This was a very scientific setup by all the great scientists that we see here. All of them have Phds.

Occasionally, Guy's would Indulge in Western Wear.
Kauk did it early on, with his Tony Lamas boots,
Resistol Hat, and Indian Wife.

Bruce Hawkins and Cowboy Roy, Lembert Dome Lot, 1992

My first pair of boots, aside from the red ones I got for Christmas age 4, were purchased used from Wheelers in
Bishop, 1980. I had Green Dot Cat's Paw soles put on. Bob Harrington told me at the time that few Bishop cowboys knew they were saddling up with what was at the time considered a connoiseur edging sole.

Shortly after, say mid 80's, R Walling followed suit after purchasing boots in Juarez as an aspect of forays from Hueco. People would call us on it. He'd devised the standard response "We're not cowboys, we're western wear enthusiasts."

Someone has a picture of Russ, Billy Russel, T Carter, Doug Macdonald, and myself all duded up in chorus line.

We would go Bouldering at the Milks and sometimes bust loose up easy stuff in our boots.

Roy here's a couple of updated shots of some of the principles from back in the day.
Riding off the back side of Mt. Gleason in the San Gabriels.

He's just choked because I rode that section and he had to push it.

Name this guy

I always thought Tipson was hard.... not one of those "shave-yer-balls"™™™ bike weenies out in their Halloween costumes. Next thing ya know Sewell will pipe in here about his latest $14k zero gravity taint abrader.
Sheesh... the Driver, on a stingray, in Hurraches would dust off 94% of youz sleek and smooth bullfruits.

Yeah E tried the riding gig for a few times until he realized he was gonna have to start dumping some dough into it to get a real ride. So Russ, you're pretty much right. Don't think he's shaving nuttin cept his mug now.

Right, the Driver's a dad and has other issues going on. Next time you talk to him Russ ask him about goin on the Montrose Ride with moi. He was a bit stressed but managed to hang tough.

Heh, I'd be embarrassed to admit that I sometimes find myself humming along to that tune, except no one has to blush on the interweb. I'd quite forgotten the source of that factoid.

Too cool.

I think 2006 and Tarbuster was the "Golden Age of Super-Topo."

Bump for this with the other Mussy Nebula thread. There's just some great, great historical, hysterical photos and slag slinging on these threads. I was only on the very outer fringes of this fringe group of lunatics, swinging through the nebula unnoticed by its encrusted denizens, but these photos bring back a lot of memories from those times. All hail the Mussy Nebula!
