It appears they will repeat just about anything if there's a cracker in it for them. and something tells me these smelly little birds expect me to clean up that perch-high pile of parrot sh#t they are soon to be roosting on.

It was cute when they were young however.

yah, til 'they' are old enough to bite, it's okay...

on the 'branch' topic I was amused that African grays use "perfectly crumulent" words. Parrots think they embiggen us all....

Chaz! What a gorgeous Congo! I have a Timneh - and I don't trust Hector either. Smart as a whip, but he can friggin' chomp!

Yeah CG. He is a looker, but he's ornery as they come.
Is "Congo" another name for African Grey?
He's a great talker, but he gets a bigger kick out of making the most annoying noises he can mimic. UPS guy was here last week and when he left he backed down the driveway. Now Stevie (the bird) makes that BEEP-BEEP-BEEP sound like a truck backing up. Drives me nuts. I like it better when he makes fart noises.

animals and their needs. Imagine what it might be like, in the throws of passion, to feel an extra tongue on your hand, and open your eyes, and pan from the expected, green-eyed temptress, to the soulfull brown eyes of an 80lb dwarf newfoundland that has your hand pinned under his almost ursine paws.

purely hypothetical, of course.

Polly wanna cracker, isn't that a Public Enemy song?

Suposedly my animals are domesticated. But when I think about the time I spend tending to their needs, sometimes I wonder if maybe they've domesticated me.

Chaz: There are two types of African Greys - Congo and Timneh. A Congo has red tail, and a more silver tone to his feathers. Timnehs have a more maroon tail and are more ashy grey. Plus, Timnehs are a bit smaller. Both are mega-intelligent and terrific mimics. Noises (as you know) are their specialty.

BTW - a better look at your photo shows that yours is also a Timneh.

Hector, my grey used to torment the dog we had. It was a very stupid dog. Hector would call the dog, the dog would run into the room, look around puzzled then leave. The bird would then call the dog again, the dog would come, repeat 500,000 times a day.

You should google Dr. Irene Pepperberg and Alex the grey for some cool reading. I've been following her work for decades.

And like you Woody, there is no doubt who is in charge in my house. It is clearly not me.

**Have a vet remove the leg band from your bird. They can be dangerous and cause the loss of his leg in the event of an accident.

CG,
Stevie has a bright red tail, it looks darker in this picture.

A few days ago I saw him grab one of his discarded tail feathers in fis foot, and use it to scratch his back. He will take a bottle cap in his foot, dip it in his water, and drink out of it like a cup. He's no bird-brain!

He calls the dogs, too. But the dogs don't pay any attention to him. They're scared of him, especialy my big black Lab. Bird dog my ass. Stevie gives the dogs a whole bunch of commands all at once ("get down lay down stay down stop it") but the dogs ignore him. I guess he knows what he's saying, he only says those kind of things when the dogs are in the house.

I'll take your advice and get his band removed, thanks.

Here is a nice image of a Congo.

And here is a nice image of a Timneh.

Pretty birds, smart are really playful. Glad you'll get his band removed. If he injures a toe or his leg and gets any swelling, the band will act like a tourniquet (spell?). That's bad news! Looks like a happy bird. I love his condo - I'm quite jealous. I have five cages and can't afford such nice ones!
