Do you even know what a Socialist is?
Seems most people just throw that word as well as many others at people who don't come anywhere near the definition. Doesn't matter if it's accurate or not, it sounds good comin' from the tube or on staticy am radio stations.

I first thought that read "soloist" of the year.
I'd vote for Bernanke and Paulson, since they arranged for the bailout of AIG and thus guaranteeing Goldman and the other bank speculators continued good health and wealth. That's how socialism works, right?
Oh, then there is this debt problem. Why are American workers so lazy. Two jobs isn't enough. You don't need to sleep. $700 billion give away. Someone's got to pay the bills around here. lol

I'm confused.
Isn't a "Reserve Deputy" the people they call out to wait for the tow trucks to get there and such, direct traffic so real cops can go do their jobs?
I seem to recall it's something of that nature, reserved for cop fetishists and people who can't cut it in the real police force. About a half step above a Walmart parking lot security guy.
If I'm wrong, please educate me by all means.
As far as these "elections" go, I'd have to agree that they are way out of line. Every one of these threads has been some hate filled rant and attack couched as ..... humor? I don't even know what to call it. I do know that in every case you end up winning your own "election" which basically means you're just wanting attention IMO.
I do know that it isn't climbing related content or even a semblance thereof. While I usually stay out of most political based non climbing threads, this is really getting out of line.
Please go climb a rock or something, and find a way to get over your self hatred that you project onto others.

Conspiracy Theories Speech
November 18, 1961
In recent months I have spoken many times about how difficult and dangerous a period it is through which we now move. I would like to take this opportunity to say a word about the American spirit in this time of trial.
In the most critical periods of our nation's history, there have always been those fringes of our society who have sought to escape their own responsibility by finding a simple solution, an appealing slogan, or a convenient scapegoat.
Financial crises could be explained by the presence of too many immigrants or too few greenbacks.
War could be attributed to munitions makers or international bankers.
Peace conferences failed because we were duped by the British or tricked by the French or deceived by the Russians.
It was not the presence of Soviet troops in Eastern Europe that drove it to communism, it was the sell-out at Yalta. It was not a civil war that removed China from the free world, it was treason in high places. At times these fanatics have achieved a temporary success among those who lack the will or the vision to face unpleasant tasks or unsolved problems.
But in time the basic good sense and stability of the great American consensus has always prevailed.
Now we are face to face once again with a period of heightened peril. The risks are great, the burdens heavy, the problems incapable of swift or lasting solution. And under the strains and frustrations imposed by constant tension and harassment, the discordant voices of extremism are heard once again in the land. Men who are unwilling to face up to the danger from without are convinced that the real danger comes from within. They look suspiciously at their neighbors and their leaders. They call for a 'man on horseback' because they do not trust the people. They find treason in our finest churches, in our highest court, and even in the treatment of our water. They equate the Democratic Party with the welfare state, the welfare state with socialism, and socialism with communism. They object quite rightly to politics' intruding on the military -- but they are anxious for the military to engage in politics.
But you and I and most Americans take a different view of our peril. We know that it comes from without, not within. It must be met by quiet preparedness, not provocative speeches.
And the steps taken this year to bolster our defenses -- to increase our missile forces, to put more planes on alert, to provide more airlift and sealift and ready divisions -- to make more certain than ever before that this nation has all the power it will need to deter any attack of any kind -- those steps constitute the most effective answer that can be made to those who would sow the seeds of doubt and hate.
So let us not heed these counsels of fear and suspicion. Let us concentrate more on keeping enemy bombers and missiles away from our shores, and concentrate less on keeping neighbors away from our shelters. Let us devote more energy to organize the free and friendly nations of the world, with common trade and strategic goals, and devote less energy to organizing armed bands of civilian guerrillas that are more likely to supply local vigilantes than national vigilance.
Let our patriotism be reflected in the creation of confidence rather than crusades of suspicion. Let us prove we think our country great by striving to make it greater. And, above all, let us remember that, however serious the outlook, the one great irreversible trend in world history is on the side of liberty -- and so, for all time to come, are we.

Very good, Ed. Here's another, seemingly ripped from today's headlines:
I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our people impel. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.
In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things. Values have shrunken to fantastic levels; taxes have risen; our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income; the means of exchange are frozen in the currents of trade; the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side; farmers find no markets for their produce; the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone.
More important, a host of unemployed citizens face the grim problem of existence, and an equally great number toil with little return. Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment.
Yet our distress comes from no failure of substance. We are stricken by no plague of locusts. Compared with the perils which our forefathers conquered because they believed and were not afraid, we have still much to be thankful for. Nature still offers her bounty and human efforts have multiplied it. Plenty is at our doorstep, but a generous use of it languishes in the very sight of the supply. Primarily this is because the rulers of the exchange of mankind’s goods have failed, through their own stubbornness and their own incompetence, have admitted their failure, and abdicated. Practices of the unscrupulous money changers stand indicted in the court of public opinion, rejected by the hearts and minds of men.
True they have tried, but their efforts have been cast in the pattern of an outworn tradition. Faced by failure of credit they have proposed only the lending of more money. Stripped of the lure of profit by which to induce our people to follow their false leadership, they have resorted to exhortations, pleading tearfully for restored confidence. They know only the rules of a generation of self-seekers. They have no vision, and when there is no vision the people perish.
The money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization. We may now restore that temple to the ancient truths. The measure of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit.
Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort. The joy and moral stimulation of work no longer must be forgotten in the mad chase of evanescent profits. These dark days will be worth all they cost us if they teach us that our true destiny is not to be ministered unto but to minister to ourselves and to our fellow men.
Recognition of the falsity of material wealth as the standard of success goes hand in hand with the abandonment of the false belief that public office and high political position are to be valued only by the standards of pride of place and personal profit; and there must be an end to a conduct in banking and in business which too often has given to a sacred trust the likeness of callous and selfish wrongdoing. Small wonder that confidence languishes, for it thrives only on honesty, on honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection, on unselfish performance; without them it cannot live.
Restoration calls, however, not for changes in ethics alone. This Nation asks for action, and action now.
Our greatest primary task is to put people to work. This is no unsolvable problem if we face it wisely and courageously. It can be accomplished in part by direct recruiting by the Government itself, treating the task as we would treat the emergency of a war, but at the same time, through this employment, accomplishing greatly needed projects to stimulate and reorganize the use of our natural resources.
Hand in hand with this we must frankly recognize the overbalance of population in our industrial centers and, by engaging on a national scale in a redistribution, endeavor to provide a better use of the land for those best fitted for the land. The task can be helped by definite efforts to raise the values of agricultural products and with this the power to purchase the output of our cities. It can be helped by preventing realistically the tragedy of the growing loss through foreclosure of our small homes and our farms. It can be helped by insistence that the Federal, State, and local governments act forthwith on the demand that their cost be drastically reduced. It can be helped by the unifying of relief activities which today are often scattered, uneconomical, and unequal. It can be helped by national planning for and supervision of all forms of transportation and of communications and other utilities which have a definitely public character. There are many ways in which it can be helped, but it can never be helped merely by talking about it. We must act and act quickly.
Finally, in our progress toward a resumption of work we require two safeguards against a return of the evils of the old order; there must be a strict supervision of all banking and credits and investments; there must be an end to speculation with other people’s money, and there must be provision for an adequate but sound currency.
There are the lines of attack. I shall presently urge upon a new Congress in special session detailed measures for their fulfillment, and I shall seek the immediate assistance of the several States...

Socialist is one of those terms like Democracy, that has meaning that is OFTEN far different from how it is practiced. If you think of the full spectrum of societies that claim to be "Socialist", "Democratic", "Communist" the boundries are pretty vague and overlap a bunch. There are essential autocratic dictatorships that fall into all 3 of these categories.
Take a quick look at this editorial by Tavis Smiley from this weeks "Sunday Morning". Kind of puts our "Democracy" in perspective.

Do you have any ideas on how to get people off of welfare and unemployment so they can actually achieve it?
Yeah, make the capitalists start earning their keep!
(A quick note for illiterate Republican voters, the rods refer to the bottoms of old fashioned box cars where hobos and itinerant workers rode the rails.)
The Bum of the Rods and the Bum of the Plush
by Fry Pan Jack
The bum on the rods is hunted down
As the enemy of mankind
The other is driven around to his club
Is feted, wined and dined.
And they who curse the bum on the rods
As the essence of all that is bad,
Will greet the other with a winning smile,
And extend the hand so glad.
The bum on the rods is a social flea
Who gets an occasional bite,
The bum on the plush is a social leech,
blood sucking day and night.
The bum on the rod is a load so light
That his weight we scarcely feel,
But it takes the labor of dozen of men
To furnish the other a meal.
As long as you sanction the bum on the plush
The other will always be there,
But rid yourself of the bum on the plush
And the other will disappear.
Then make an intelligent, organized kick
Get rid of the weights that crush.
Don't worry about the bum on the rods,
Get rid of the bum on the flush.

To honour him, I propose that we fundraise to send him on a trip to the middle east. He's never been there, and I'm sure it would be good for him. He might even learn something. First we'll send him to Jordan. Very scenic - Lolli posted some nice photos earlier. Then to Egypt. Then to Israel. Then to Turkey. Yup, he'll have the time of his life. The independent commissioner of voting has ruled that those ST members who attempted to vote prior to 8/15/11 will be ineligible to vote in the 2011 SSOTY race. The reasoning was that they are unable to read and therefore unable to make an educated vote.

no i don't think so! you convened this gathering and invoked the will of the People, the great unbridled roar of the unshackled supertopo postertariat who have, here, installed the first posters' soviet. you are no longer the sole possessor either legislative or executive power. the posters' soviet is sovereign. all previous forms of liberal-democratic political organization that arrogate to themselves such power are null; those powers now lie with the posters' council of which you are merely one part.

While it is so easy to demonize "socialism", read the below and tell me what is "wrong" with a more modern and accurate definition, not just the Pub's version:
"The Socialist International (SI) is the main international organization of social democratic and moderate socialist parties. It affirms the following principles: first, freedom—not only individual liberties, but also freedom from discrimination and freedom from dependence on either the owners of the means of production or the holders of abusive political power; second, equality and social justice—not only before the law but also economic and socio-cultural equality as well, and equal opportunities for all including those with physical, mental, or social disabilities; and, third, solidarity—unity and a sense of compassion for the victims of injustice and inequality. These ideals are described in further detail in the SI's Declaration of Principles."
If agreeing with the above text means I should be nominated...sign me up, as it sounds a hell of a lot better than current state U.S.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party changed less during that same time, until 2000, anyway. If you were at all equitable, you've have equal disgust for a Party that has fairly abandoned the core principles of conservatism.

Skip, what was the largest single terrorist attack ever to take place in Israel, in terms of the numbers of dead?

The bombing of the King David hotel in Jerusalem on July 22nd, 1946 killed 91 and injured 46. The attack was carried out by the Jewish terrorist group Irgun, with at least the knowledge of the paramilitary Haganah. It is still the largest terrorist attack that has ever taken place in what is now Israel - assuming that you accept that some or all of Jerusalem is part of Israel, that is. (TBA)

Hey Bob
Since you brought up my medical bills with Skip a few times, I thought I'd ask you to let that go.
Skip give email me with a doctor suggestion (and said he emailed the doc) and told me to contact him if I needed anything. So at least he reached out and took action, which is something most people didn't do so that much means I don't think it's good to beat him with what might be his exaggeration.
which is mighty socialist of me. Do I win?

Karl...at least a hundred people contacted me with advice or well wishes when I had my surgery...that doesn't mean they offered to pay for my $120,000 medical bill.
Skip stated he offered to pay...he is a liar.
Hope you healing and doing well? Worse things could have happened to you and me...like living inside Skip skin.

Got my cast off! Which is bliss. Before that I actually hiked in and climbed Mt. Starr King for the first time. Maybe I shouldn't have done that but it didn't hurt me and made me stronger.
Now to rehab my arm in the next couple weeks cause I'm planning on climbing at least moderates by later in the month

Thank you Jeff, for the nomination. It tells me that I am doing my duty of countering your constant attacks.
All it takes for evil to succeed, is for good men to do nothing. Edmund Burke
Its nuts to think that all socialism is bad, just as its nuts to think that all capitalism is good. Neither is a perfect system and must be balanced. But you have lost your balance by claiming that all socialism is bad. Which means that you would privatized the military, the police, and the fire departments. We tried that, it was horrible, but it appears that you don't care. You think this is a joke, but as some are learning, its not a joke. Hopefully you will learn some day that words have meaning and creative ability. I think somewhere inside you, you do know this, which would make you evil if you can use jokes such as this to try and tear this country down.
Privatize the military
Privatize the police
Privatize the fire department
Do away with the EPA
Do away with the FDA
Do away with the ATF
Do away with public education
Do away with social security
Do away with medicare
All so you can make a little more money.
I agree that the tax code is a mess. I agree that social security needs some changes, but this is not because of socialism. That is a lie and you are a liar if you keep parroting this position.
Thank you again for nominating me.
Go ahead and laugh at me Jeff. It just proves that you have an ugly place in your heart.

Jeff, you almost sound sane, until you start up again with your constant rant against all things socialist. If you really wanted to make progress, then you would end that rant. Socialism isn't inherently evil. Just as capitalism isn't inherently evil. Both must be balanced, and sometimes watching out for your fellow man is good for the individual, such as in the form of social security.

Oh.. and thanks for admitting that deep at heart, you are a socialist.
or at least you recognize the need for some socialism.
now if you will just stop your bullshit rant against all things socialist. As though all forms of socialism are evil. Then maybe more people would start thinking you are an okay guy.
Edit: I actually think that some parts of social security need to be reworked, but at this point I wouldn't trust the republicans to do it. Not with their current anti socialism stance.

Not even close to a socialist,
Oops.. guess you are still deranged, sense you claim to love three socialist organizations. The police, the military, and the fire department.
Unless of course you want to privatize them. Then you really would be a pure capitalist.
So which is it? Are you a commie loving socialist fag? Or do you want to privatize the military, the police and the fire departments?

I don't think you can have a purely capitalist or a purely socialist system. Call it what you will, there have to be provisions made for the common good of all if you want a civilized society.

Jeff, So why do you bash anything that appears to be socialist? If you want to appear sane, then you should stop that. Like I said, socialism isn't purely evil, just as capitalism isn't purely good. They both require balance.
too bad the republicans have spent so much effort demonizing all things socialistic. They appear to be fools because of this.
Of course this message works on the masses, but eventually it will backfire on them as it is with the tea party.
You are smart enough to figure this out? Aren't you Jeff? Or do you want to continue polarizing this nation instead of constructively talking about what could help?
As I said, until the republicans change their constant rant against all things socialistic, I wouldn't trust them to rework anything like social security. Even though it needs it.

Fatrad: This does not apply to you, since you accept being evil and greedy.
The rich are different — and not in a good way, studies suggest
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44084236/ns/health-behavior/
The 'Haves' show less empathy than 'Have-nots' There is one interesting piece of evidence showing that many rich people may not be selfish as much as willfully clueless, and therefore unable to make the cognitive link between need and resources. Last year, research at Duke and Harvard universities showed that regardless of political affiliation or income, Americans tended to think wealth distribution ought to be more equal.
The problem? Rich people wrongly believed it already was.

There's so much capitalist pig sh#t going on since I got back from the Tetons, I can't filter it out.
So fatty, how many millions have you made in the past week on short sales? Care to share the wealth with us socialist retards who've lost more in retirement savings this week than you made in yesterday's market? In the last year I was employed I probably paid more income tax than you did. At least I won't have to pay any taxes this year.
SO maybe you can explain the logic that a Corporation can carry losses forward and I can't? Would love to have some capital losses in reserve for when I'm employed again. IF that ever happens. Mitt Romney says corporations are people, I want fair treatment dammit, either I get to carry my capital losses forward or they don't.

those Evil European Socialists are at it again
From HuffPo
Four European countries are banning the short selling of stocks in their markets to try to halt the precipitous plunge in value of troubled European banks, a step that some experts say could intensify fears and ratchet up risks of another financial crisis.
Belgium, France, Italy and Spain have decided to impose a temporary ban on short selling, beginning on Friday, according to a statement from the European Securities and Markets Authority released Thursday evening, after markets had closed.
It remains to be seen how American markets will react to the news. The past week has seen extreme volatility in the Dow and other benchmark indexes, as investors have greeted even seemingly minor developments with amplified responses.
The Dow Jones industrial average finished Thursday 423 points up, or nearly 4 percent on the previous day, a lift that was widely attributed to a fall in the number of people submitting claims for unemployment benefits for the week.
The ban on short selling carries echoes of the 2008 financial crisis, when the Securities and Exchange Commission temporarily banned short sales in the U.S., a move that resulted in a brief rally but ultimately did little to arrest the market’s free fall.
Thursday’s ban in Europe could be taken as a sign of lack of confidence in the markets, say experts. Investors might interpret it as a harbinger of disaster, and react accordingly.
In short-selling, one investor borrows stocks from another and sells them off, hoping their price will drop before she has to buy them back and return them to their original owner. If the price of the borrowed stocks does drop, the difference in price is the borrower’s profit.
Critics say that short sales can lead to a downward spiral in stock prices, and argue that policing is necessary to check runaway speculation.
Earlier this week, South Korea and Greece both enacted temporary bans on short sales -- effective for three months in the case of South Korea, and two months in the case of Greece. Turkey also took steps to restrain short-selling, though it stopped short of an outright ban.
In France and Spain, the ban on short sales will last for 15 days, and will only apply to stocks in the financial sector, according to the Globe and Mail. Belgium will ban short sales on four financial stocks for an unknown period of time. It was unclear which stocks the Italian ban would affect, or for how long it would be in place.
A spokesman for the U.K. Financial Services Authority told Bloomberg that Britain has no plans to ban short sales. What? those Socialist Brits aren't buying in?
And South Korea? I thought they were a Bastion of Free Market Capitalism and Defenders of Democracy against the Wicked, Corrupt and Inept North Korean Evil Empire.
And Bush's SEC banned short selling? Abominable. Oh yeah, one more thing the Shrub and Tricky Dick (not Nixon) tried that didn't work.
OH wait......read paragraph 1 again: they're trying to protect the stock value of European banks. No matter about the asset values of the proletariat.
Political shibboleths like "socialist", "capitalist" and "free market" mean little when the economy's got you by the short hairs. Or in other words, even the "capitalists" (defined as people who make their living with capital instead of the sweat off their backs) are worried this time. Why else would they be selling short in such volumes?

That FatTrad, he's such a mensch. Always doing mitzvahs for others, even the goyim, asking nothing in return. And so modest and humble, too!
Really, he's the only possible choice.
Elfont! Elfont! Elfont! The peoples' choice.

And now it turns out that FatTrad has hooked up Cleo and Phil, and they're going to be married. Seems like a pretty altruistic action to me, really almost socialistic. True right wingers are selfish, and not nice to others. More proof that FatTrad's the winner, as though there was any doubt.

What I respect about The Baba is the fact that he doesn't deny his stance. He defends his thoughts admirably. Although I have called him a commie in the past, he's more of a socialist. And that's fine.
Everybody got belief systems. He's a nice guy.

Karl also has the only worthwhile post in this entire PoS.
What's the most pinko socialist institutions we have?
#1- the military, they get free/cheap/subsidized health care, early retirement ages with money for life, free college programs, subsidized consumer goods, and on and on.
Followed closely by the police and fire dudes. All the most favorite GOP sacred cows are run more socialist than any euro country.

That's the lamest argument you lefties always harken back to.
Those institutions are the most fundamental roles of any form of government. I argue, one of the primary roles.
Has nothing really to do with socialism.
All the most favorite GOP sacred cows are run more socialist than any euro country.
Not really, just military and police. The other Euro countries run their ENTIRE country that way.

I'm amazed that FatTrad didn't nominate any Republican apostates - that is, lifelong Republicans (there are several here) who saw the error of their ways, and now vote Democrat. True believers of all stripes, such as the teabaggers, are usually fanatically intolerant, most of all toward those who 'fall away' from the supposed true faith. They usually burn the apostates at the stake.
As FatTrad's real mission is to discredit the Republicans and their fellow travellers, he really ought to pick up on this one.

Imagine the fuss if someone proposed a thread "SuperTopo Fascist of the Year" or "SuperTopo Conspiracy Theorist of the Year". There are undoubtedly some conspiracy theorists, but I've seen no evidence that there are any socialists here. Maybe a few social democrats, and a fair number of liberal democrats, but no socialists as a political 'scientist' would describe one.
As for fascists (corporate authoritarians) here, the jury is still out.

Your quote regarding the cap - "No self respecting Chinese would be caught in one."
Not true at all. The vast majority of Chinese still to this day strongly support Mao.

Thank God this is almost over.
Fatty, this is a GOP sponsored election slander and I voted for myself twice already so that means I have three votes.
I"m not voting for myself a third time. No need to thank me. I'll be collecting bribes from lobbyists soon enough
Peace

You are a quality nominee, following in the footsteps of that other Karl, Karl Marx. I hope you pick up a few more votes before tomorrow.
You don't get it, I shouldn't have to earn my victory in a socialism contest. Just friggin give it to me banker boy. I'm entitled!

With socialism, isn't everyone a winner?
And with capitalism, isn't everyone a whiner?
Too bad neither system has actually been tried in a 20th century developed democracy.
