There is a difference. You can convert digital captures to black and white in Photoshop, or you can use black and white film.

The film has a much larger dynamic exposure range than color film. You can also easily set up your own darkroom, and developing it is an art in itself, using the techniques of Burning and Dodging.

Ansel Adams supposedly did a lot of tweaking in the dark room, so each of his prints were nigh one of a kind.

I used to really be into photography. After it went digital, I hung it up, because I never accepted Photoshop. It felt more like an industrial process than capturing something magical within the camera.

It really changed. After film died, I gave it up.

One works with the tools at hand.
Ansel had film and now we have both film and digital techniques.

I expose my soul when posting my shots here in this wasteland.
I don't intend them to get marketed ever.
Film is expensive in comparison to digital photography.
As long as it gets the idea over to the viewer for that split-second of attention, that's all I care about.
Case closed.

No supposedly about it.

There is A LOT of work done in the darkroom (most of the time).

Film, sensors, enlargers, printers...all tools. It still comes down to the artist's vision and the ability to reproduce it.

BTW I firmly believe if Ansel was still around he would be a master of Photoshop.

Edit:
After film died, I gave it up
It isn't dead. There are still many people shooting film.

I could have shopped it but do not have PS, myself.
Restrictions apply here on the bottom of the tech ladder
with Windows 7 and the program installed there.
And I've just run out of sensor cleaner and swabs.

Where's the cheapest place to get these things, anyone?

I'll leave all the technicaltheorizing to the technocrates.

I'm just interested in saving 1000 words.

Uptown. Did Ted Turner have a hand in this.

zBrown, you're such a bleeding bloody bleeder. Subtle, too.

Don't need us no technocrates. Need me a hamburger, though.

Mouse, I love the Mondrian in B&W. It's a perfect example of what I've tried to explain to others around the challenge of black & white photography, insofar as you have to be able to see what's in front of you and envision the shades, not the actual colors, to provide the contrasts of the image.

PhotogEC, there you have it.

I like black and white when there's little color in a scene, too.

Conversion from color to b/w.
