Here's a group of us humping Raleigh Collins' Hang Glider to the top of Ryan Mountain in like 1987?. Raleigh, RIP,(in the lead, I'm behind him with my ever present Bubba-Deck,) was taught how to climb by myself, BVB, Off White, and other SD scumbags in the mid '70's. He launched and was hoping to gain some thermal action and possibly make it to Palm Springs but was affected by downdraft and landed at Ryan Camp...Viewed the whole time by the park superintendent the whole time, (he was even parked at Ryan when he landed...) Raleigh eluded prosecution as the tool thought it was actually quite bold!
ps; Beauty clean-up and texture on my last topo Ray!

did you ever, Mr. Fish!

I thought these had been dutifully sorted back into the sordid depths of the napkin dispenser in Carl's Junior and lost to the world, back in 1983?

In the many years--what, 28 now?-- since I saw this last, I'd forgotten the the sheer chutzpah, the joie de vivre of the original. The word magnificence comes to mind. As does yikes.

I remember hanging with my brother John sometimes and we might end up at like say a Denny's or something. It had been cold and miserable up in the monument and we were just hiding out. John would get to scribbling on a napkin just to get a fun groove and coming up with wicked funny stuff and I'd follow in suit...For kicks John said "Let's bury these deep in the napkin holder and someone might just pull one out, not knowingly, and get a shock maybe..."

Blessed be Pyro I couldn't tell you...In all honesty I'd only gone there from SD a few times with Shawn Curtis in the '70's, and then with the Guargoyle early '80's so I'm not the one to answer that one, even though I do dearly love that place! (I also went there for 2nd unit shots for "Under Seige 2" which got the film crew in a world of sh#t for painting over the graffiti, although water soluble, people were pissed! I had nothing to do with that...) Could very well have been the "Yabaho" (one man tribe)

I wonder if that last shot is at "5.10 on the Outside" problem? I was there the day of the contest('86)& CG got sandbagged good on that one.

Yep, thaDood, that be "5.10a On The Outside", 5.11d at Woodson.

In the Open Division, I had one more slot on my scorecard at that contest and about fifteen minutes left when I ran into G. Epperson on the road. I told him of my dilemma when he suggested, "Why don't you try 5.10a On The Outside, I saw you do that the other day? It gave the Elite guys problems." So, I ran down and found the TR in situ but no judge/belayer. I quickly recruited someone from the crowd and was able to tick the problem for my final entry that day. What a memory that comp was! There has to be more pictures out there from '86 that haven't surfaced, there must be!

Joshua Tree, mid-1980s

Watusiman! Fond memories of long days wandering the desert, and nights freezing, burning pallets and whatever we could find in the Hidden Valley dumpsters, drinking Lucky Lagers by the score. Oh, and bits of climbing here and there...

Hey Watusi, whats a climber of your caliber doing living in Newport? I've lived in Corvallis my whole life, if your ever looking to sample some of the finer climbing closest to you give a shout! Surf much?

Cheers
