The Great Easter Bunny Hunt

Not everyone thinks rabbits in the wild are cute.

While many may spend Sunday hunting the more traditional Easter egg, some New Zealanders will have finished up a hunt for the animal that supposedly delivers them.

The "Great Easter Bunny Hunt" is an annual rabbit hunting event taking place in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island.

Forty-seven teams are participating in this year's hunt, held as a way of decreasing the non-native rabbit population.

"Each team has 12 shooters, so that means we've got 564 hunters, plus their entourage -- the 'picker-uppers', the cooks, the supporters -- heading out on to farms throughout Central Otago to do battle with the rabbits," event organizer Dave Ramsay told the Otago Daily Times.

The teams shoot throughout the night and have to return by noon Saturday to have their haul counted. With a total prize purse of $3,500 ($2,800 U.S.), most hunters aren't in it for the money but rather the trophy awarded to the team that shoots the greatest number of rabbits, Ramsay said.

Last year, hunters brought in more than 20,000 of the mammals.

"There's no shortage of rabbits," Ramsay added. "There's been plenty of food for them and they have been breeding like ... well, like rabbits. "

Guido,

I live in Florida on a golf course we have a few bunnies, however we also have alligators, Bobcats and Florida Panthers. They more than keep the bunnies in check. This is a survival of the fittest state. Chuckle

Lovely topic, PRat!

Certainly enjoying the "Sunday after the first full moon of Spring," not that there's anything pagan in the least about that.

Beautiful posts everyone!

My Easter Bunny...so many years ago at an Easter Parade. He was born on Easter Sunday (but his birth year it was in March) As a young boy he tried to convince me that since he was born on Easter Sunday he should have two birthdays!
He's now in Europe for the year (boo hoo), but I'll be seeing him again in two weeks and I promised him a "springtime in Paris". It certainly can't be very exciting with his Mom...but what the heck!

Evidence from the Kepler telescope indicates that there are probably tens of billions earth sized planets in the galaxy. Stands to reason that millions of them have some sort of life. I wonder how many of them have life forms with ascension into heaven stories? We're probably unique with the easter egg ritual....or are we?

A special Easter for us this year.

Today is my wife's birthday and though she has walked the path of life with me for 25 years, she has always walked a separate path, not alone, but not with me.

That changed last night at Easter Vigil. It only took me 44 years, but yeah, I was baptized last night.

For Easter we did a route on the Rabbit Ears on Wheeler Crest.

There were a few fun, cozy sections.

There was more flared stuff up high. With some fun runout easy face in between. At 5.9, first climbed by Doug Robinson and Galen Rowell in the 70's, This would definitely be considered a non-modern route.

Almost didn't post this photo due to embarrassment about the 3 pieces so close together. I've aided with less gear. I guess I was so excited to get gear in.

Happy Easter! My son was born on Easter Sunday in 1991 (March 31). He has always, even twenty five years later, insisted he should have two birthday celebrations (except when it falls on the 31st every once in awhile).

I do miss setting up the egg hunts.

Enjoy a lovely day everyone!
