Okay, searched but couldn't find the other thread...
Bean's a great guy. Maybe you've met him, climbed with him, or heard about his legendary whip in Patagonia.
Well, he's been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and could really use our help.
Visit this site to donate, and/or just to see some gorgeous photos.

Bump for Bean Fever.
The first time I went to Granite Mountain he was stressing his way up the Candyland chimney and then saved Amos and me when we tried to find our way back down around the walk off to our packs. He smartly had a headlamp. We had nothing but dehydration and a piece of humble pie after floundering our way up Karl's Corner.

This guy is the greatest.
I posted up a comment on his site, I'd like to share it here. Please help if you can....
POST on BB's site:
"Hey bud. This is some crazy stuff. I too, am at a loss of words. I'm just gonna post up some memorable thoughts of our time together:
I remember the wind river range. You told me to "Get up and walk like a man" when I was butt scooting across some easy terrain. You jumped off a hill and glissaded down, and I was crazy enough to follow.. I'll never forget the look on your face when you thought I couldn't stop... "Dig in your heals, Dig in your heals"
Then there was Yos. the Central Pillar of Frenzy. I chalked up 5 times, and you told me to get my "Fat Ass" off your rope and climb. We did the freeblast and got into some sketch with a German group... You bolted the last 3 pitches and busted my ass.
Finally we did leaning tower, we listened to your MP3 player, smoked a half and half, ate cold chili and finished up that day.
Last but not least, you and Colorado Bob blew up my stove at C4... that was a trip brother.
Just know I love you and your the best partner I've ever climbed with. Your a fighter, and I pray that your fight will be won.
Heres to you Bean Bowers, hard man, wonderful human, and true friend who doesn't hold back. You forced me to be my best, and for that, I'm truly thankful. Your a blessing to the world bud. Hang tough, call if you need anything, and I'll put some dollars in the kitty for ya.
Doug. "

Wow. Read Bean's blog. All my best. I am a stage 4 cancer patient too, and have a thread on ST about it. Prhaps it would be helpful to him if he checked it out.http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/1239624/Malignent-Melanoma-Survivors-who-climb
If he would like to talk privately, e-mail me for sure. You can reach me through my handle "Disaster Master" here on ST.
Tough fight. It seems like Bean's on it as much as possible. Climb on, my man.

On a trip up the Matanuska in the Chugach AK in the late 90's Bean stayed in camp one day and said he would cook dinner while me a couple friends poked around on the glacier.
We returned to find Bean hunched over the stove completely naked (it was a warm spring day) except of his plastic boots. He looked up nonchalantly handed me a bowl of beans and lentils and said, "The water I got for dinner was a little silty"
I put a spoonful of the glop in my mouth and immediately bit down on two rocks the size of a dime and nickel. I spit the rocks into my hand and stared at Bean incredulously.
"What the problem dude? I warned you," was Bean's deadpan reply.
Classic Bean!!

That was a hoot for sure. It was a MSR stove (very light for backpacking), and somehow...... it got sit on a hot Coleman stove (Hmmmmm). That thing was wasted, it blew up at least 50 feet for sure.
I took it back to REI and they put it on display. The actual stove part was bent like crazy. Crazy times man, we had a BLAST...
Did you get to meet the couple from Europe that was there? It was a pretty little blonde and a coolass dark headed dude...
Also, we met 2 couples from Porterico, some dude whos name was Ian, and another guy and two chicks. Me and Bean met up with them at Curry and the chicks were stuffing food from the foodbar to take back to the guys! Bean and I hid them between us and pretended like they were preggo. I remember Bean hid and when we were outside, he came running up and yelled "HEY, your BUSTED".... Scared the crap out of us, then we all just busted up laughing.
Good times man. I really hope and pray he's get's through this, he is too much fun to hang out with, always up for some fun in the mountains.
GO BEAN!!!
EDIT:
Damn Ian, is that you??? If so, hope all's well, you still riding that bike around yos??

Here's the word from Bean this evening;
"Good news! It's all working. The doc was way encouraged. He thinks we
need to kick this thing into the hole it crawled out of which means 2
more rounds of chemo... so i got a week to sack up for the 3rd round
then 2 weeks off, then 1 more. But he thinks we got it maybe. Docs...
no offense AO... no definitives. Just keep thinking germ cell. He
thinks the thing on my kidney is unrelated and he said if the chemo
wasn't working I'd be writhing in pain from the tumors. An MRI
tomorrow to see the spine . The shoulder is indicating a shrinkage in
lesion size, so more good energy this way tomorrow please. I know it
is there, but my anxiety is growing as we go deeper into this I have
to admit. Scared shitlesss, mostly because we are still in kind of
guesswork zone a bit. But overall the news is great, please pass on
the word.

I met Bean in the Winds nearly a decade ago, but long before that I spent some time on and off climbing with the Jackson crew; one of them in particular was a great story-teller. Many of those stories featured "MaBuddyBean." So it was a pleasure to meet the Big Man behind the stories.

After Bean was born in the Montrose Hospital in 1973,his parents, Ed & Jane, brought him home to 227 East Gregory Ave. in Telluride. A few years later, they left Telluride. In 1979, Chuck Kroger and I moved to Telluride and bought the house at 227 East Gregory Avenue. In the mid 1980's, Jim and Kathy Bowers brought their nephew teenage, Bean, to one of our LARGE 4th of July parties. We remained in sporadic contact with Bean ever since.
So from Bean's birth place, surely to become a future National Historic Site, big wishes for conquering the cancer and growing old and wise with Helen for the next 50 years.

A recent update on Bean's third round of chemo... PLEASE send prayers money and good vibes... this is an awesome guy who's made a huge impact on my life:
From Bean:
"Wanted to get a note out to you before I go in for round 3 of
chemo.... we got a BIG party right around the corner. I am amazed at
the energy going into the fundraiser and it should not be missed. I
hold it as my motivator through this next week of getting carved up
by chemo.
The support from all over has been amazing, and believe me Helen and I
feel it and lean on it often. This whole experience has been a real
eye-opener towards the strength and breadth of the human spirit. Never
would have I guessed how many lives I have touched or influenced, but
now I kind of get it. I won't get too heavy, but this is proof we are
a truly unique species, and it feels like really what life might be
about is all these connections we make. Not what we do, how we do it,
nor what we have... it is what we give each other, how we influence
the youth, and how we pas on the bits and pieces of knowledge and
wisdom we pick up along the way.
Enough philosophy for the morning. This is more a war cry for this
round of chemo, so take a deep breath and send us the best vibe you
can, and think Germ Cell cancer (without going into detail, we NEED
this to be germ cell!), and think forward to the days and adventures
we will all share together down the road.
And it is with all my love to everyone that I share this, and a big
thanks from both Helen and me."

I just read the latest update. Wed. May, 4, 2011.
From Beanfever.com:
On behalf of all the folks that were involved in organizing the fundraiser in Boulder, I want to thank everyone who came and threw down. It's a little hard to know exactly how many folks turned out but we are guessing that there were between 300-350 crammed into the Avery Brewing Company Tap room. We did not expect such a great turnout. There really was standing room only. Bean and Helen were there for about one and half hours before Bean started to lose his energy and had to leave despite his desire to hang and be with the old guard. We raised a ton of cash for Bean and Helen and really do think this will help with his recovery. He is doing tons better than just 5 weeks ago when he finished his first round of chemo. In those 5 weeks he has made strides forward. I had breakfast with him on Saturday and he cooked and made coffee while Helen slept. Total turn of the corner for him. He even is down to one crutch! It ain't over and he still has a long way to go with round 4 starting in about a week. We are all hoping that this truly nips the cancer in the butt. Pending additional imaging in a couple of weeks, we all should have a better idea how effective it has been. His recovery so far has been extremely positive. Let's keep the good energy going his way and continue the support that has helped thus far.
Raffle tickets and on line auction stuff is still happening. Don't wait till the last minute folks. The Raffle is killer; check it out and purchase some tickets to travel and explore in Beans other home in South America.
All the best,

Last Wednesday Bean and I visited together on the 11th floor of the Anschutz Cancer Center. He underwent his fourth round of chemo. It was pretty humbling to experience what this did. Bean was super strong. He'll be back even stronger. He is set to return home next week, which will be super healing.
Five PM Mountain Standard Time Four hours from now the on line auction for a stack of adventure, guided climbs closes and $ 10 raffle tickets for a two week trip for two to Chilean Patagonia closes. Nice gifts and helping Bean out.

Thanks for the bump. Bean we are thinking of you!
This was posted on
http://www.beanfever.com/updates.html
yesterday by Alan Oram MD.
All;
I have some very bad news to report and have delayed getting this out in deference to Bean and Helen’s privacy. Bean went home from Denver the first week of June after visiting his Oncologist. The news then was not great in that it appeared then that tumor in his liver was still present and may have actually gotten larger. With this news, Bean and Helen made their way home to Ridgway taking the setback news in and trying to see what the next step was going to be. By the end of the week, Bean developed new seizures and was subsequently flown back to Denver from Montrose. The outcome of this is that new tumors have grown in his brain as well as in his liver. The seizures were a direct result of new metastases to the brain. This change is viewed as a terminal condition and there is really little that Western Medicine can do to change the course of what is now essentially a non-treatable cancer. We all had high hopes initially knowing that this development was possible. The brief time frame that it has taken for the cancer to spread is shorter than we hoped for. Bean is back in Ridgway now in a place of comfort as best he can, trying to deal with what lies ahead. After all he and Helen have been through so far, it is incredibly painful and sad.
At this time, Bean is looking at some alternative treatments and is seeking whatever solutions might exist essentially out of the box. All we can do at this point is offer support to our good friend. No one can predict what lies ahead in the near future. He will likely have some very good days and some less so. This is truly the time when impermanence and taking life day by day and minute by minute really make some sense.
I will be heading to Ridgway on Saturday to spend the day with Bean before heading back to work so will have some better idea of how he is feeling and doing. He has expressed interest in some flavored vodka, which I will be bringing down to sip, tossing some back and laughing as much as we can with some old guard friends.
In the meantime send good thoughts and vibes.
All the best,
Alan Oram

I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awaken in the mornings' hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in cicles flight
I am the stars that shine at night
Do not think of me as gone,
I am with you still in each new dawn
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there I did not die.

What a sad loss. :(
To see such a young and strong guy fall, really puts our own mortality in question.
Enjoy every moment folks. Life is too short for regrets.

I never met Bean, but hearing stories about him and just seeing his pure, joyful smile makes me sad to think I will never get the chance. Following this thread and Beanfever gave me hope at times that such a strong, giving person would be able to push through such a tough spot. Like a fairy tale. What a heartbreak to see it end this way. For me there is no way to put a sugar coating on it, it just sucks. What a good guy.

Tipped a beer (a few) to Bean here in Salida, CO yesterday evening at a local bar with some old friends. Most of us came up from Prescott, AZ to be raft guides during the mid 90,s and moved on or are living in this area. I'm just visiting and am so pleased that this took place. I needed it. We told stories of around the Arkansas River and the antics there, but there were also stories from all over. Some of the stories people were a part of while others were just great tales told with giggles and probably a bit of loosness as to the validity of the actual tale being spun. Certain personalities lend themselves to such boosting of the facts! :) It was a pleasent session and a lot of laughs. I mean tear jerking laughs. Not to mention some tears for the man.
The town that normally doesn't have sick downpoors had one and then the sky opened up to one of the best sunsets I've seen in a while. Hard not to make a connection.
Love you Bean..........thanks for the memories!

Borrowed from the OuterLocal tribute that Christian Beckwith wrote:
***
I’ve been up to a lot here in the Fitz Roy area, most of it non-mountain-climbing related: building, bouldering, guiding and lots of mate. The time in the mountains has been full value, though, and I’m celebrating life because of all that’s happened. Jonny Copp, Josh Wharton and I got three meters from the top of Torre Eger when the whole piece of the summit I was on gave way and sent me flying with it thirty meters to the base of the ‘shroom. Jonny asked me if I was alive before bursting out laughing….
The ‘shroom lead had taken me three and a half hours. It felt like melting A4, and pretty much ended that way: twenty-eight sharp points, thirty meters, an ice-slab landing—and I walked away with a sore back. I coulda spit on the son-of-a-bitch’s tippy top from where the fifteen-foot-high, six-foot-wide flute of rime crumpled beneath me…. All this after a cold open bivy and some serious choss climbing for the previous thirty-six hours and a way-bold lead through an overhanging Bombay tube….
All in all it was the most climactic non-summit I could ask for, and this week I’m just really appreciating life. Friends, health, the colors in the sky…. The experience was simply a vivid reminder that all is good and mundane and seemingly going your way until suddenly it is not, and then luck or the lack thereof steers our inevitable destiny. Guess it just wasn’t my day, so I am taking my winnings to go live fully through a few more, and trying hard to remind myself to keep it nonmundane and dynamic, always.

Wish I'd known you, Bean. See you on the other side.

I've got a story for you. Bean and I climbed in the winds in 03. We did Pingora, and Wolfs head, with the 5.10 start.... muddy finger crack, all sweet. I've got a video of him yodelling while I was walking the rail down below.... He was so funny and cool. We topped out, and He was on the phone talking about two climbers who had been struck by lightning on the Grand... He said we should get our asses down asap. Once we got to the bottom of the decent, he decided to glisade (sp) down a snow slope. I'd never done it, but I was like "what the hell", so off I went. My big 240 pound ass was gaining some serious speed and I was digging in... His eyes got real big and he said, DIG IN, DIG IN!!!.... Boulders were approaching quickly, but I got stopped. We ran into another Doug from some guiding service, guiding some folks over to the left of the glacier pool, and some folks were diving in that cold water.
Afterwards, he asked me to borrow my journal and pen.... I think he went and wrote some poetry. I've got more stories to come. This was just one that was an awesome day in the mountains with the one of the coolest climbers, friend, and guide I've ever had the pleasure of roping up with. We planned on doing Moose's tooth, but never got to it. I'm hoping me and JenC can do the climb it this fall in his honer. He was one of a kind for sure. Tough, stubborn, and a ferocious climber. Greatly missed.
Doug

Bean was a member of that tragic tribe of people who are suddenly taken away while still at the peak of their powers. My twin brother was another. He was only a few years removed from running a 2:26 marathon and still going strong with climbing as his new endeavor. A brain tumor appeared seemingly out of nowhere and he was dead four months later at age 49.
Take nothing for granted....each day is special.

After binging some climbing movies this weekend I was reflecting on Bean. I moved to Telluride in the late 80's and he was my roommate. A couple short, but vivid stories/memories.
I climbed with him once (I'm not a climber), I climbed up three flights of stairs on an open staircase just outside an arcade on main street in Telluride. Bean took the underside of the stairs and I remember marveling at how he pulled himself up 30 feet on the back edges of the concrete stairs. His fingers were like polish sausages, even at 19
His work ethic was unbelievable, his strategy for securing a season pass in Telluride was to get up at 4:00am everday, hike up to lift nine, get to know the lift attendants real well, then after a few weeks, once he really knew them, he'd watch for the rotation and once those lift attendants made it down to the lower lifts, he'd roll right through, say hello, no pass check. The rest of us lazy bastards paid our $800 bucks.
Another time, these trust fund ski hippies living down the hall, set off the fire alarm at 2:00am, Bean came out of his bedroom, jumped up and smashed the sh#t out of the alarm, blew it up, off the ceiling with his fist. I remember he was so pissed, not because of the disruption to his sleep, but because he was angry that he let himself put his hand in danger by smashing a plastic fire alarm.
Another time, I was boarding with him, he kept telling me to point my board and pickup more speed, less turns, more pointing. He was bombing this hill, launched over the cat track huge. When he landed he caught an edge. The next day he had a fluid pocket the size of a cantaloupe on his back. I could hardly look at it, but he laughed and went to work.
He also had the most bad-ass International red jeep thing. While I know he thought of us (my brother and me) as lazy, snowboarding bums, he set the standard high. Hard working, always smiling, super athletic, all-around bad-ass and I frequently think about how I should be living my life to the fullest simply out of respect.
Another time, I was hungover and headed down to this bakery at the end of main street for some coffee and scones, bean was just returning from an early morning ice-climb with a woman climber, I can't remember her name, who I worked with at Sophios. I remember her telling me that Bean was going to do great things, that he was destined to climb in some of the world's most beautiful places.... she was right.
Lastly, I remember being told by John "Rocket" Reaves (I think that's who told me?) that Bean's dad was one of the guys cutting the first runs in Telluride with a chainsaw.
So I got it off my chest, hopefully others will read this and smile. My little piece of Bean's life, I was blessed to have known him, if even for short time.

I met Bean in Patagonia in the 90s. He and Dave Nettle(??) rolled into the Paine and fired off the Central Tower in like 12 hours after arrival. Totally crappy season weather wise and they swooped a summit and were out of there like it was some weekend outing. Seemed like a great guy, best wishes to his friends and family.
