This might be a bit of a long shot seeing how Hampi is a bit of a walk from Yosemite.

I've read that it's considered the best boudlering in all of India. Images of Hampi offer evidence to the validity of that claim.

Mostly the info I'm looking for is where to rent a bouldering pad and possibly a chalk bag. I brought a little baggie of chalk and a brand new pair of TC's.

I found a little guidebook on line which has a basic layout and a few problems. It was $3 and probably worth that if for nothing else than orientation on where to start.

the guide offers, "If you forget or loose your crash-pad, you can still rent one In the Rollo restaurant of Hampi Island." but a net search has not yet yielded where exactly this is.

Disaster Master is down on bouldering with me this weekend but as he's in California and will have to take a Star Trek like Transporter he won't be bringing a crash pad.

Anyone ever been there. Buelher?

Hampi is not that big a place. If you go first to the tourist area with the fort and temples, then wander down to the guesthouses and restaurants further down the hill overlooking the river and just ask around, someone will know.

From the photo here it looks like the bouldering area is across the river from the fort and temples which are on the hill in the background?

If an island is mentioned, it has to be in the river.

I only visited the archaeological side of Hampi so I didn't see any bouldering.

Hampi Bump.

thanks for the info, Jan.

I'm sure I'll figure it out.

After 8 months of not climbing due to injury I think I'm finally healed. I'm so psyched to bust out the TC's!

I heard Jongy, flashy-p and Weld_it are a three man solo no O2 team on K2.

Maybe they will head south for a bouldering sesh.

I found that page for bouldering on Hampi. But there's some dated material there. It mentions a place that no longer has a website and has a disconnected phone.

I was bouldering in Hampi in 1988, I imagine it has changed a bit since then! Hampi is one of the top 5 places I have been and truly magical. You may go for the bouldering but will soon be sucked into the ambience, stone carvings, and history of the place. This was described by European visitirs in the 15/16 C as being grander than any city in Europe and was the capital of the last great Hindu empire in India.
The main temples are still very active so try to go during a festival.
One day we met a sadhu and he invited us into his cave for tea. Turns out he was a retired University professor from Bangalore. His wife had the house and money, his son and daughter were married with careers so he had fulfilled his family role. Now he was in a traditional Hindu retirement where he left his family and previous life for good to devote the rest of his life to a spiritual search.
Enjoy wading across the river with the water buffs!

From the main bazaar find a boat man to take you across the river. Once across, ask for the Goan Corner Guesthouse, there's a good bunch of boulders close to there and most likely some pad people to hang with. Sharmilla is the best!

We also hired a car and driver for the 3 days we were there.

We didn't see any snakes but were told that a big poultry development project had failed because the chicken houses had attracted so many snakes.

And do check out the art and architecture along with the bouldering. It is a magical place.

I already stick out like a sore thumb! though it is hampi and it's full of tourists.

We left Mysore two days ago. We are traveling with our friend from Mysore. He's a tuk tuk driver. He spent three years of his life walking the roads as a sadhu. when his kids leave the house he probably will too and return to his life as a sadhu.

We rented a car and have been traveling that way. We'll arrive in Hampi tonight.

Coz - we won't make it that far north. Hampi is as far as we will get. And I certainly will be posting a trip report. These last two days have been a rolling comedy!

Though I'm going there for the boulder India has been and will continue to be about a spiritual journey. We found the right friend. We're so lucky. Sudahma knows 26 of the 27 official indian languages. He's knows so much about the temples. Hampi is the birth place of Hanuman so the interest in temples won't be lost in me with bouldering.

DD- thanks for that info on the pad. I'd love to run into a couple pad people

Pate - I'll keep my eyes open. I know it's no joke. Sorta a little nervous.

Maybe you can rent a mongoose at the same place you rent a pad. That would be handy.

I know this is an old thread but is anyone planning a trip in December? I have to leave Nepal for a month so it only makes sense to try and get to Hampi!!
