One of our dogs, Boris, went in for surgery today. The vet just called and it's not looking good. Several weeks ago we noticed some lumps on his hind quarters and a little bump on his eyelid. We took him to the vet and they wanted to cut right away. We got some other opinions and in the meantime more lumps began to show. He had several of the bigger ones removed and they will be analyzed, but the vet said they are everywhere. They don't know yet what is going on. It may be cancer or just some virus or skin infection but it does seem serious. The wife and I very attached to our dogs and this is becoming an emotional ordeal. I humbly ask for prayers, vibes, advice or assurance. Anything could help at this point.

Just got back from walking the dogs.
So sorry to hear about your friend. I know it sounds scary. We went through a similar thing with our Oliver a year ago. We were really frightened for a few days. Some pretty significant surgery and he's been fine since.
Good luck to Boris and his packmates (you, your wife and other dogs).
If it comes to the worst Boris will know how much he's been loved and what a great contribution he's been to his family. All that a dog wants. None of us can hope for more.

So sorry to hear about your pooch.

It's so hard to see them age, much less have medical problems.
What would we do without our beloved animals.

I recently went through the same thing with my 12-year-old, rat terrier Monty, he has a small eggs lump behind his front leg. I charged the vet hoping for the best. I was greatly relieved when the vet said it was benign, mostly happens to large dogs, it's a fatty tumor.

I hope you to will get good news.

I will say a prayer for you.

Wow, Boris looks like Frankendog. The poor little feller is still disoriented. We will know in a few days what the lab says. He still has many bumps of various sorts. Aww Wayno, hang in there! It sounds like you're taking the best care of the fellow as you possibly could. Keep us updated, please!!!!!!!

From your brief description, in my limited experience it seems like cancer would be further down on the differential list, since you make it sound like they popped up relatively rapidly. Did they aspirate them first, before surgery, to see if they could see any bad looking cells? My first thought, without seeing the lumps, for suddenly arising things on the skin (assuming they really did appear suddenly, rather than being things that had been growing all alone that you only suddenly noticed) would be allergies... but allergies wouldn't generally leave a lump that would need to be surgically removed, so I'm kind of baffled.

My 15 year old girl Stella has had a lump on her foreleg for about 3 years, very slow growing. I've been aspirating it about every 6 months just for peace of mind; never found anything more than sort of fibrous junk... until last Friday when I found clumps of suspiciously cancery cells... so we're going to cut the lump off on Monday. I'm pretty leery of putting a 15 year old large dog under anesthesia, but fingers crossed.....

i love critters... i worried for a sick cat, after i first moved in here... could not figure what was wrong, but my friend from the cat shelter came to help... was just a cat-cold, she reckoned, and with a few cats pills he got better... but none had ever been sick before, so i was afraid it was from the past owners being such dirty folks, etc, and having dogs, and being dirty, too...

prayed alot though, and will sure be doing that now...

Boris had five areas that were cut on. One on each of his rear flanks, one on his belly, one on his right front leg and one on his head. There is well over a hundred stitches. He slept pretty much from the time he got home at four until this morning when he just started to whine. A sad pitiful whine. He has an appetite and is starting to drink and has all kinds of meds, but he looks like he is a little pissed off. Can you blame him? As soon as we get the lab reports we will know more about his prognosis. Our other dog, Joe has taken up a position close to Boris on the couch. It's obvious he cares about his buddy.

Boris stays downstairs because with that cone on his head and the XL teeshirt wrapped around him he can't get up the stairs very well. I spent last night on the couch with him and Masha did the night before. He stays real close and is obviously thankful. Surgery that extensive has to be traumatic for a dog. No news from the lab yet and my fingers are crossed on both hands and it is really hard to make coffee with your fingers crossed. My wife and I are really grateful for all the kind thoughts and I wish Boris could know how many people are pulling for him. Thank you.

One thing keeps coming to my mind. Boris is a great friend and companion and his illness has moved me, but in the end he is only a dog. I think of Disaster Master and what he is going through. He is another human being and even though I don't know the guy I appreciate his existence more than my dog. Kind of weird thing to say but it has been on my mind.

hey there say, wayno.... all life is important... if one can't respect the life of a critter, which is training for each young child, or should be, then, it is sometimes, (not always) hard to reach out to the human world...

though, each life may be on different scales as to what these lives give out to others, in families, or the world, each scale should have a place in the human heart...

love you dog... and love othes, as well...
the human heart, is able to do so much for so many...
even folks, a'far off: meaning we can have compassions at home, and still pray and send good wishes to others, and they can all be deep and sincere, as well...

you're doing good...

Boris would cordially like to invite Mei Fu over for Dinner.

Ha ha. I know what Boris is thinking Masha, but he would be in for a surprise when he found out just who was going to be dinner for whom. I had to rescue a couple of adult raccoons last week after Mei Fu chased them into our next-door neighbor's yard and had them backed into a corner. I reckon if I hadn't got there in time she'd have shredded both of them.

On the other hand, if Bob's intentions are peaceful, i.e. not food-oriented, she might just accept.

Edit to let Mei Fu have her say. I have to censor it, but after cutting out the cuss words, it was something to the effect that just because he was cute when he was a baby doesn't mean I wouldn't cut him into bite size pieces now...

I can't remember the eighteen syllable medical term the vet used, but something about inflammation of the fatty tissues. We didn't hear anything about what might have caused it. Prednisone is what they use to treat it. That oughta get his puppy going again.
