Is it the need for mystery that make you reject scientific knowledge?

Let's stay with one topic until we exhaust it.

I don't. I'm an academic. I recognize that there are domains of study, and I recognize that the standards, beliefs, and values of behavior to every different community.

Emotions are spiritual? So are conceptualizations, so are myths, so are instincts. Everything is spiritual.

If you want to know how a mystic or spiritualists feels about something, try asking them first before telling them what they experience or believe.

Hello MikeL where did you go?

A mind lives no where

Haven't we already concluded that the mind is condemd to the individual body?
Everytime I look at my daughter, my mind concludes who she is by what it remembers from her mind. I know if I ask her what 2+2 what she'll say. But I never know if I ask her "do you want to do some math" what her answer will be. It'll all depend on her emotional status.
But it all comes out of her beautiful body! Where else could the mind be?

Sorry so simpleton

Where does my computer program live as it runs? And, yes, minds and brains are not programs and computer hardware, but there are several eerie analogies.

For the record, brain scans have shown that people speaking in tongues activate an entirely different part of their brain than people who are meditating do. Whatever is going on, they are two different mental processes. What I would like to see is a study of the chanting of mantras to see what part of the brain that lights up.

Hi Jan!
Did they actually have people hooked up before they started talking in tongues?
How they could predict who was going to speak in tongues seems baffling.

By ur Insinuation; experience causes the brain to activate the lights to shine.

But could it be something else activates the brain which causes the light to shine, which intern inspires the chanting?

Serious question.

Jan, the scans show that the frontal lobe area of the brain that is associated with speech was quiet. For me, that is an indication that the subject wasn't talking to anybody (like God for example) but rather was making random sounds.

What causes such phenomenon is the question.Materialists think it is produced by the meat brain and spiritualists think an outside source is using the meat brain as the medium.

Unfortunately my books are all still in Japan and I have no idea where in these 20,000 posts I reviewed the book that discussed brain scans of people speaking in tongues and meditators. Evidently there are people who can speak in tongues pretty much every time they pray. That's how they measured them.

As I recall, the brains scans for meditators showed quiet frontal lobes and a part of the brain activated that is related to spatial perception while the speakers had a social relationship center activated. Speech and singing use different parts of the brain which also figured in. My guess is that mantras are closer to singing; words are spoken but the discursive brain does not have to be on, while the very most effective mantras are chanted or sung.

Here are four books I've read on the subject in the order in which they are easiest to read. All are written by people with some kind of Christian background, though Bernadette Roberts sounds more like a Buddhist most of the time. Despite the titles, the first three interview a lot of scientists and describe their studies in laymen's terms.

So Jan... are these Tongue Speakers really channeling angels? Maybe YOU will answer the question, none of the other spiritualists will do me the courtesy with a direct yes or no answer.

Will you?

The whole subject has been studied from many different angles, including anthropological linguistics. Look up gossalalia.

As for what is happening, there are many different spiritual explanations - voices of angels when Christians do it and voices of demons when non Christian do it is my favorite! In Asia, many think it's either spirits good or evil, speaking through the person, or they may be channeling languages they knew in a past life.

The really interesting cases are when someone speaks in a modern language others know. Usually it turns out that the person did speak that language as a very small child and had forgotten they knew it, which already tells us something very interesting about memory and how it is stored. If we only knew how it worked, imagine how much of what we had forgotten could be retrieved.

And then there are the examples of seemingly real languages which nobody can explain, that I've heard with my own ears. At a Japanese Buddhist temple I once sat through 45 minutes of what sounded like a Chinese conversation between the priest and a friend. He didn't speak English or Chinese and she didn't speak Japanese or Chinese, yet I heard Chinese (this was after meditating for more than an hour). When I asked her what they were talking about, she had a lengthy explanation of common past lives in Shao Lin (both did martial arts in modern times). When I asked her how she knew all that since she didn't speak Japanese and he didn't speak English, she was very puzzled. When I told her I heard them speaking Chinese, she was flabbergasted.

Another time I took a student group to the same temple. That time we had an interpreter who translated from Japanese to English as the priest talked about Buddhism to my class. Afterwards a Black woman student who was a Chinese linguist for the military said to us, "isn't wonderful how the priest speaks perfect Chinese?" We were incredulous. Then she explained that while we heard Japanese and English, she heard him explaining how to solve her marital problems in Chinese.

I have many other such interesting examples that I have personally witnessed. That's why I have such an interest in both neuroscience and woo woo.

Will you answer my question then? I am not interested in what academia thinks about it... Will you answer my question directly? Are these people hearing the voices of angles?

Yes or no?

DMT

Ps. The priest that spoke in tongues with your friend, what did he say the conversation was about? I'm curious! :)
